World's BIGGEST Axial Yeti XL - Twin Motored 2x6s HemiStorm Yeti XXL

  • After a few weeks of kicking back and just running cars for once, I'm doing another build. I really like the Axial Yeti XL that I built, and after beating it for a few weeks I've found out where I can improve it, and where I want to take it. One of the major features of the Yeti XL (and for some a reason to complain) is the torque twist. I for one love it, as it makes a solid rear axle car handle the way it does. Although the sway bar eliminates most of the torque twist there is still a bit left, no issue unless you want to alter it. A lot.
One of my favorite all time cars is the Exo Terra, it looks scale, has four seats and handles like a dream. I thought combining the best of both worlds might be a cool idea for a new project, building a four seater Yeti XL.
The cage of the XL is pretty much square, and hacking it up should not pose too much of an issue. After doing some measuring I also found that making the cuts in the spots of the photoshopped image would make sure I can mount a second transmission case, and a second motor. I have two Castle Creations Mamba Monster 2 setups that I'm going to drop in this build. Both of them will have a separate 6S power supply, the adjusted battery trays should be able to house four 3S packs.
To avoid having to custom build any drive shafts and so on, my initial idea is to have one motor dedicated to the front drive train, and have one for the rear axle. The ESC of the rear part of the drive train should be able to get mounted in the fuel cell, provided that I vent it properly. Running a double ESC and motor setup will also allow me to set up a dig system, in which the front and rear drive is operated separately or tuned down gradually to enable the Yeti XXL to crawl better.
The electronics I'm running are a proven set up: the Castle Creations Mamba Monster 2 2200KV combo. Axial has put a similar setup, although rebranded, in the Yeti XL RTR, and after seeing several videos of it running I am thoroughly impressed. The Yeti is a large rig, with considerable weight, and a high torque system like this one will make it capable on a lot of different surfaces and in a variety of circumstances.
    www.castlecreat...
After having bad luck with a few of my more recent LiPos by Venom, I'm switching to a rather new brand called Dinogy Batteries. Dinogy offers a ton of different packs, for all sorts of applications, and for every budget. The Yeti XL will be tested on 4S first, so I opted for two Dinogy 2S 6500 mAh 65C packs to get the job done. These specs are impressive if you consider the cost, and I'm pretty confident they'll be up to the task, as Dinogy has been building a reputation for themselves in demanding applications.
    dinogylipos.com/
The steering servo I selected is fairly middle-of-the-road, I installed a HiTec HS-7954SH. It delivers some decent torque, good speed and has good hold power, basically everything required to get those huge rims to point in the right direction.
    hitecrcd.com/pr...
The final thing on my list was wiring and connecting the assembly. After years of Deans connectors and being a bit fed up with shrink tubing, I have gotten some Castle wiring, and more importantly some 6.5mm Castle Connectors for the Yeti XL. I believe Castle Creations has struck gold with these, as they are easy to solder up, don't require any shrink tubing and have huge bullet connectors to deal with massive current. After installing them on the Yeti XL, I think the Castle Connectors will find their way into all of my electric rides. Stack up on solder when you get them, as they require quite a bit to get fully secured.

I have had a Yeti Xl for a long time now, and wanted to do something with it. Then I remembered your videos of Yeti XXL. I had to do it! You weren't shitting us about the back of the cage! I finally got that done ✅ but not until after some blood was shed. Now I'm reviewing your videos for the rest of the cage carnage. Thanks for all your tips and videos!
