World's BIGGEST Axial Yeti XL Part 2 - HOME MADE PARTS - HemiStorm Yeti XXL

  • I'm continuing work on my Axial Yeti XXL. That's right, double X! In a previous video, which you can find in the playlist, I split up two brand new Axial Yeti XL kits. A full spec list and a full list of downloadable drawings will be available once the project is entirely finished.
    For now, it is time to fuse the chassis halves together. I'm doing that using a tabletop CNC machine called the X-Carve, which has been supplied to me by a company called Inventables. In the previous video you have seen my initial impressions about this tool, in this one you see how it actually applies to the RC cars that I built.
    I was very skeptical at first. I did not have high hopes on getting the machine to run, or even being to be able to use it for something with an RC application without being a true headache. Turns out I was worried about nothing. I'm no poster boy. I still don't sugarcoat anything. Positive reviews or leaving out negative aspects of a product by trying to persuade me in any shape or form are just not me. So I will just say it flat out: this X-Carve kicks some serious ass! So far I've machined Delrin and carbonfiber, it will in the future even be used for aluminium, and it just doesn't stop to amaze me. To put it like this: for the kind of cash I spend on a cellphone you can get one of these. Seeing the possibilities it offers it's a pretty amazing concept, and most importantly (for me as a novice in CNC) exceptionally user friendly.
    If you haven't understood it to the fullest from the video, from here on out you will see projects occur on my channel which I made using the X-Carve. On the Inventables website all drawings and a written description will be made available, free to use. This means what I'm making in my video, you can make at home, or at a friend's home, or at work, anywhere you have an X-Carve available.
    What I do and try to explain in my videos is for you to have fun with, to hopefully inspire you, and to share with like minded people. This device just opened up an entirely new era in what is possible.
    Any questions, as always, just shoot them in the comments box and I will try my best to answer them.

    The electronics I'm running are a proven set up: the Castle Creations Mamba Monster 2 2200KV combo. Axial has put a similar setup, although rebranded, in the Yeti XL RTR, and after seeing several videos of it running I am thoroughly impressed. The Yeti is a large rig, with considerable weight, and a high torque system like this one will make it capable on a lot of different surfaces and in a variety of circumstances.
    www.castlecreat...
    After having bad luck with a few of my more recent LiPos by Venom, I'm switching to a rather new brand called Dinogy Batteries. Dinogy offers a ton of different packs, for all sorts of applications, and for every budget. The Yeti XL will be tested on 4S first, so I opted for two Dinogy 2S 6500 mAh 65C packs to get the job done. These specs are impressive if you consider the cost, and I'm pretty confident they'll be up to the task, as Dinogy has been building a reputation for themselves in demanding applications.
    dinogylipos.com/
    The steering servo I selected is fairly middle-of-the-road, I installed a HiTec HS-7954SH. It delivers some decent torque, good speed and has good hold power, basically everything required to get those huge rims to point in the right direction.

    Well. It would appear to me that Inventables has certainly picked the right person to put their machine to the test. This is an amazing series. Enjoying it very much. Someone who has a bit of experience cutting Carbon Fiber for work. Make sure you wear face mask and don't let too much get all over your machine. The grit from this material will eventually harm the machine. Clean up is crucial. Thanks for the follow up on the XXL, I know I wasn't the only one wondering. It looks awesome And I look forward to seeing that monster run. Good Job Bud!!!!!

    Fantastic work so far man. I would not sleep if I had that machine, the projects you could do would be endless.
    I definitely would try build aftermarket parts for my current Tamiya Mountain Rider build.
    Keep up the great videos brother.

    I can see a whole new HemiStorm line of modified RC upgrade parts in the near future! Very curious if you are thinking of building an RC from scratch now that you have the capability and tooling? Take the best ideas the Manufacturers have come up with and build the most awesome scale RC yet to date. Can't wait for the next update video!

    I love how technology is breaking into the hobby, things like the x-carve and 3D printers have made things possible that were either out of reach of most of us cost wise or would have been forced to go to industrial company's to help with making things, for under £1000 you can now be your own manufacturer, you just have to look at the quadcopter market to prove whats possible, garage builds turning into million $ companys

    since you chopped up two chassis to make this don't you have another back and front half of yetis that are shortened??? you could make it into a short wheelbase version of the yeti xl, that'd probably be pretty neat. awesome job on the videos man keep em coming!

    • @rcbuggies57
      @rcbuggies57 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Derik Sowlcowski that would be awesome but the places he cut were ahead and behind the motor mount, so on one where he used the short ends it would have no place to mount motor

    • @hemistormrc
      @hemistormrc  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very good thinking indeed, and with the X-Carve, plus the parts I saved, it should not be a problem to turn the remainder into a rolling chassis of sorts. More to come!

    Chris I have a question on your choice of materials for the bottom of the car. Why did you choose delrin instead of carbon fiber to make the bottom plate? Isn't carbon fiber much stronger than delrin? Was it cost or some other reason? Thanks bud and by the way that thing is the most radical RC build ever! :-)

    I am disabled and have some head trauma and I am still somewhat confused about the new machine, but can you make, vinyl stencils or a different kind of stencil for painting. I am NOT very artistic, I know what I want in my head but then I get so confused. I would like say a pick my black lab service Dog and she has a white marking on her chest. Can you machine the picture i send you, I stick it on spray paint then remove and spray paint again . I hope you understand what I'm trying to ask. It would be one of a kind stencil. If anyone can explain it better please do for me. Then I could just buy it off you. Sort of like the RC Sparks logo. Thanks, can't wait to see more and try to learn. I have a VW Baja body from Pro-Line.

      Hi Juno, using tape or liquid mask should be able to allow you to create whatever it is you desire to put on a lexan body. I've never used vinyl cutters, and perhaps the X-Carve would be able to cut those, but I would not touch that feature. What I like about paint is that the imperfections make each shell unique. Let me know if that explains it a bit!
