Perhaps Jim's best live performance of a single song. My God, that boy could sing. While looking like a Greek God.

To be sure, bands had to shorten their songs to 2-3 minutes to play Sullivan, (but on the bright side, there was no lip syncing on that show). So as a result, The Doors did have to omit the song’s lengthy instrumental interlude. But this is the best & most energetic performance of “Light My Fire” that I’ve ever heard. Jim’s vocal is so rich it’s sublime - he goes from sexy crooning, subtle vibrato & excellent breath control to feral screams and back, to a level unheard of on other versions. Every single band member is “on fire” this night, truly firing on all pistons. John’s drumming is perfect, Ray’s organ & piano bass & Robbie’s guitar are superb. I especially love it when Ray screams “Come on!” toward the end & how Robbie is grinning from ear to ear while they’re killing it playing his song on Ed Sullivan.

Even the Rolling Stones changed their lyrics to be on Ed Sullivan. And many bands in that era wouldn't play live on TV, but rather play and sing over a recording. The Doors were in a class of their own. And all this without a bass player! Long Live the Lizard King!

I got a good laugh when I heard Robbie tell that story in a documentary in the early 90's.

This was on Ed Sullivan variety hour July 1967.
I saw this performance. I was 9 years old Ed Sullivan was on Sunday night my parents watch, this is how I saw the Doors for first time. there is live TH-cam videos a listening to The Doors live is like being there in concert.
