  • Machu Picchu, nestled high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, is perhaps the most iconic archaeological site in South America and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. This ancient Inca citadel, often referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas," sits at an altitude of approximately 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level, overlooking the Urubamba Valley below.
Built in the 15th century at the height of the Inca Empire, Machu Picchu is renowned for its remarkable architecture, sophisticated stone masonry, and panoramic views. The site is composed of a series of intricately constructed terraces, plazas, temples, and residential buildings, all meticulously crafted from massive stone blocks without the use of mortar.
