    I watch a lot of videos on this topic because I travel alone so much, and this one is really great! I’m so glad you mentioned the fact that people are more likely to be targeted if they have logos. The wealthiest people I know do not wear obvious logos and definitely wear things with understated elegance, and that’s in Europe and the US and Canada. They do not want people to know they have money, and they’re never targeted. Brilliant advice, Alice! Thank you.

    Definitely agree with this! I went to Paris in the fall, I wanted to bring only a small amount of clothes, so I did black leather ankle boots, black tweed pants, a black leather crossbody (APC), a tan trench coat, and navy, maroon, beige, and red tshirts. It was really easy and I felt like I blended in MUCH more than the first time I visited Paris. Speaking even basic French will help sooo much as well!

Alice is a fashionista so I presume her world revolves around all fashion; I imagine she might accessorize with high end items when attending really nice social gatherings rather than just walking from point A to Point B in Paris…. For us folks looking to make the most of what we have, keep it simple. Unless you want to splurge! Then go for it!

    I like a leather small to medium shoulder bag, I don’t really like wearing cross-bodies because they cross my neck, irritating the skin. It’s getting harder and harder to find good shoulder bags, they’re nearly all cross-body these days. I think a handheld bag could be very easily pulled away by a stronger person, plus I like being hands-free.

    • @edennis8578
      @edennis8578 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, as she pointed out, it depends on whether you want to get robbed or not. Hey, it's your choice. If you wear a hand-held bag, the thing is to carry it in front of you, not at the side. Thieves tend to run up from behind; it's hard for them to grab something that they can't see. For myself, when I'm walking around, I don't carry anything more than I absolutely need, so a wrist bag or a small clutch is enough. Carry it in front of you. I don't attract thieves; maybe they think a small bag isn't worth stealing.

      I live in the US, in New England, and I don’t dress like the average American. My style is classic, understated elegance. I was brought up to dress this way as a sign of respect for oneself and others. I had no idea at the time that my mother was teaching me was to dress à la Parisienne. Not all Americans dress in athletic wear as daily clothing. I grew up in Boston, in an urban environment, and that greatly affected our choice of clothing. I moved to a bordering state, and the people here dress much more casually, as a rule. People always say that I look so nice. and I wonder why they don’t put forth the effort into making themselves look their best.

      Really all of Alice's advice is good for the US too. Looking elegant is always appropriate, no matter where you are. I'm an American and I think most Americans would see Alice here and admire her look and style. I keep hoping the gym clothes/baseball cap look will fade here.

      @@1marianne I dont undestand why the classic style must to be pushed down the other. They are equal. Self expressing. As an American, I've never dressed as an American, I realize. I'm proud of this, haha. I always get asked where I'm from when I'm out in public here in Miami because everyone here dresses in flip flops, crocs, and SUPER casual attire that I cannot stand. Including leggings and gym clothes 365 days a year. UGH.... I belong in Europe.

  • @kimberlyperrotis8962

    I don’t wear these things at home in the US, either! I especially hate the black or gray tight, polyester gym outfits that everyone wears everywhere, it’s almost a national uniform. Most people never go to gyms or even go on walks, anyway. There’s nothing comfortable at all about all that super-tight and sweaty poly and spandex. If I had to wear those, I would never get dressed at all! I much prefer tailored clothes in natural fibers and lighter colors, mostly. I would never wear a cliche’ beret in Paris, either, but especially in warm weather. I used to wear wool berets for my daily winter commute, because I don’t like sock hats with my corporate wool overcoats, but the Monica Lewinsky scandal ruined them for me. Even though I wore them for years before, everyone started saying things like “trying to catch a president?” No thanks! Parisian fashion has always been my inspiration since working with two beautiful Parisienne colleagues forty years ago, they always looked so great.

    I don’t wear anything anyone would want to steal, including my engagement ring, etc.
    Specifically in churches, it’s disrespectful to wear hats, sleeveless tops and short bottoms. There are signs at the door for all of them asking you not to.

    When travelling in Europe I have always gone with a group. We may not stay too long in any one place so we have to travel really light. That means I have to carry quite a bit of stuff with me. I must have a bag that is big enough for it all and that has a sturdy enough strap that someone won’t cut through it. (Those things happen.) Also I have noticed that lots of people in Germany and Scandinavia wear very casual clothes so Paris is not all Europe.

    I typically carry a backpack (leather one) when I go to and from work here in the Washington, DC area of the United States. It has my everyday carry items (spare glasses, phone charger, etc). What should I carry? I’m a guy. I’m Andrew.
    As far as shoes and attire go … are chelsea boots ok? What about chinos and a button up shirt with a sweater when appropriate?

Also no one is wearing white sneakers because they will get dirty and who is wearing that when it's raining all the time in Pari? lol that's silly. What you’re showing here are American (mostly university) hooded “sweatshirts”, I hate them. They look sloppy and the inevitable poly/cotton blend is too hot and sweaty. I have a cashmere hoodie and a silk jersey hoodie, without all the sporty pockets, etc., and those are my only “athleisure” items. Even these I find difficult to style in an elegant way, although they are much simpler and in much better fabrics than standard hoodies/sweatshirts. (It would help if they fit better, but I keep losing weight, from aging I suppose). Athleisure is such a huge trend here, but it just isn’t me, it’s super-casual and sporty. I will wear cotton leggings, shorts or joggers and tees on my exercise walks, but they’re not proper day wear, in my opinion.

    Bonjour Alice, this is a great video, funny and mostly accurate. However, may I please just point out that there are Americans who know how to dress elegantly (whether here in America or abroad)? Unless you speak with us, you will not know that we are American, I suppose... 😂 For those people that are wondering why this doesn't go both ways (Europeans dressing like Americans when in USA) - consider that the concept is about dressing with class and respect, period. If Europeans were notorious for dressing frumpy or in garments that are too revealing, then its probably fair to assume that the advice would be going in the other direction.

    • @alyeska1320
      @alyeska1320 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree wholeheartedly with this statement. No one ever guesses I’m American unless I speak to them. If I’m with my children, friends, or sisters, we don’t speak loudly enough for them to hear. My mother taught me this, and I’ve taught my children as well. Elegant but simple clothing is accepted everywhere, and it certainly doesn’t have to be expensive. This is a great video for those who don’t know this yet.

    One time I wore an old navy striped-shirt, jeans, and some flip flops to a beachside slushie cafe in Corsica (the waitress probably didn't see my shoes though) but she thought I was French and asked "do you want a straw?" and I said "peach flavor" IT WAS HELLA EMBARRASSING and when the Corsicans realized I spoke English and not French, they ALL GOT SCARED and gave me the side eye (they were still nice though, just afraid and didn't know what to do) and one of them gave me a head-nod to follow the waitress when I was going to get my slushie from the machine outside.
    😭I should've worn a beret to look like a tourist but blending in that the locals think you're one of them is pretty sweet though despite it being an embarrassing experience (keep in mind I'm Filipino so I'm surprised the locals thought I spoke French and not English).

    Wear whatever you are comfortable in, paying attention to sacred places/museums/galleries. Those places require "decent" look.
    What tourists should pay more attention to, more than their clothes, is their behavior. Don't be laud, rude, don't throw trash anywhere else but into a trash bin.
    My husband and I have visited 40 countries (many of them visited more than once) and never blended, however, we never grabbed attention . Of course we wore sneakers, of course there was a medium size of a backpack included, since we were walking from 20-30 km per day. We were standing in long lines (very often 2-3h) to enter museums and then walking there from 2-4h. My feet would not bear any kind of shoes apart from sneakers.
    When we visited notorious places full of pickpocketing, we dressed like poor people. Yes, you are not representable in photos, but safety was our top priority. We travel for ourselves, not to show it to the rest of the world. What we noticed is that the beggars were skipping us- we were not a target.
