    I'm not a Conservative voter, but this is a very insightful documentary. I remember him resigning and my mum saying 'there goes another one'. However, I didn't understand why he went. Now I do. Good on him for sticking to his morals though especially working under such a difficult regime...And my gosh..Geoffrey Howe's speech! Very quietly savage but extremely powerful. Even Maggie had to admit it was the best one he'd done. He had clearly had enough too.

    Can't help liking Heseltine and his family - his wife and daughters, his son. Yes, they're clearly well-to-do, but they're not stuck-up. Not at all. They are open and down to earth. I'm working-class and not ashamed to be. But I can recognise something decent in Heseltine and his family. I think, and I could be wrong, it might be something to do with what is called 'old money', breeding that brings decency and a recognition that they have been privileged, and want to put something back. Lord (Peter) Carrington and others of the old Tory 'one nation' patrician party had the same qualities. Don't get me wrong, I've never voted Tory, but the Toryism represented by someone like Heseltine is something I can respect. Sorry to ramble. (I've done a spot of belated research, plus been corrected on here - Michael Heseltine mostly made his own money, so he not, uh, 'old money'. But he seems to characterise most the best qualities of 'old money'.

    • @DBIVUK
      @DBIVUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Heseltine was the classic 'new money' Tory - Alan Clark famously gibed at him that he had "bought all his own furniture" in a very telling remark.

      @martm216 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@DBIVUK yes, David - I did a bit of late research after I wrote my lil eulogy. Seems Michael mostly made his own money. He did SEEM like 'old money'. Oh well, that will teach me. Still think he's a good guy though. Was impressed with his family. Thanks for your comment anyway.

    Had Heseltine not resigned in 1986, he would have become PM, you only become PM by staying inside not by fighting from the outside.

    Heseltine is a throughly decent man.
    If only politicians today are like him.
    We live in a post truth world where decency and manners mean for nothing.

    Michael Heseltine is a rarity for me, the possibly one Tory MP I would consider voting for, and one that I would have liked to have become Prime Minister.

    I'm no Tory of any kind, but Hestletine was an exceptional politician and compared to the rest of Maggie's senior boys, would've been a much more palatable PM

    Maggie the puppet master. although already ousted by her own party - she still had the final say by making sure her man Major got in to succeed her and kept that Heseltine OUT...!!! The Iron Lady to the very end :-))

  • @alphabetaxenonzzzcat

    I find rather perplexing people praising Heseltine as some kind of "nice Tory", despite the Liverpool regeneration(which I am a bit skeptical of as it seems to not be balanced in its economy) look at one of the first things he did when he was President of the Board of Trade and Industry, the mine closures in Nottinghamshire(which had supported the Tory government during the miners' strike in the 1980s).

    • @wastag9412
      @wastag9412 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So what they supported the Tories? The coal mining industry was long dead and nobody should have had preferential treatment based on politics. Thatcher was awfully partisan in the way she treated the situation, hence the divisions amongst the pits, which isn't a model that Heseltine felt obliged to stick to, and rightfully so.

    Heseltine should read up on Roman history, if he did he would find that Brutus never got to be Emperor after murdering Caesar.

    • @clevercypriot1629
      @clevercypriot1629 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Julius Caesar wasn't Emperor and Brutus never wanted to be. It's a completely frivolous analogy.

    • @Freddie1980
      @Freddie1980 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@clevercypriot1629 Your being deliberately fastidious. A layman thinks of Caesar as an Emperor although historians know his official title he gave himself was 'Dictator for Life'. Brutus lead a rebellion army along with Cassius, has he won at the Battle of Philippi he would have had likely had consulship for a long as he needed to clean up the rest of Brutus's supporters.

    • @clevercypriot1629
      @clevercypriot1629 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Freddie1980 No, Brutus was a political idiot. If he wanted extralegal authority for himself he would have sought it after the assassination instead of dragging his feet. Even if I am being overly fastidious, the idea that Heseltine is somehow a traitor is completely ridiculous. He disagreed with the politics of the prime minister of the day and sought to challenge her legally. This is no treason. The idea that someone is bound to never challenge a democratic political leader because they served under them is completely ridiculous, whether buttressed by poorly thought out classical analogies or not.
