    I saw this video by chance. I subscribed to your channel when I saw your video on flex nibs. And I wasn't aware that you posted this. But I'm reminded again why I subscribed. Your content is gorgeous, the music in the background is lovely. The whole video is just... relaxing.
    By the way, I'm just green with envy for all the inks. They're all beautiful. I'll just have to start saving up to get all of these😂

    Your timing is excellent - I found and subscribed to this channel yesterday, and earlier today I spent some time looking for a nice blue ink with magenta sheen! I think I'll give that Polar Glow one a try, once I lift my shopping embargo!

    WAIT WHAT, a non smearing sheening ink! what magic is this? my fingers are kinda moist and sometimes sweaty so even normal ink does that for me sometimes.
    what paper are you using?
    for me, polar glow smears like CRAZY on all my papers
    EDIT: noticed you mentioned tomoe river, wow, that paper is extra smudgy, you must have magic fingers! or really dry fingers :D or maybe I am the one with magically moist fingers :P ?

    • @thewetpen
      @thewetpen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yes... if your fingers are not dry, then any sheening ink will make a mess. No getting around that. There's one exception... and that is Noodler's Baltimore Canyon Blue, which is the only bright blue, sheening ink that is also completely waterproof. Unfortunately, there are also lots of sheening inks that will stay sticky and smear all over the place for days, even if you have completely dry fingers. Some of the organics studio inks are like that.

    Have you tried the Kakimori brass nib for your swatching? Works wonderful. Love it. Best buy for it is St. Louis Art Supply they have the steel nib also, best price on web, paper etc. Great store great people, just like FPR are.

    • @thewetpen
      @thewetpen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      :-) Not specifically, actually... a lot of my heavy sheening inks (including Organics Studio) smear quite a bit. And I should have said... these ones will smear also, if your hands are damp or sweaty. That's just the nature of sheen. But! They at least dry completely, unlike some others.

      @thewetpen Polar Glow has just arrived....Oh my word, it's spectacular..!! It also seems to be less fussy with paper than I was expecting, Moleskin, Rhodia and Clairfontain are all fine (Moleskin for example is rubbish with Diamine Oxford Blue) so this is my weekend sorted 👌👍👍

    Thank you for the video.
    I am new to fountain pens and am awaiting the arrival of the one I ordered. Of course I like the sheeting inks. I had no idea they smear! Or any ink once dried. I ordered a FPR pen and FPR ink sample. I guess I will be testing it for that issue!

    • @thewetpen
      @thewetpen  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Most fountain pen inks are dye-based and water soluble (so that if they dry out in your nib, they can be washed out and it won't ruin your pen), so most inks on paper will also smear if you get them wet. Sheening inks are particularly susceptible to smearing if your hands are damp because the "sheen" part is tiny crystals of pure ink sitting on top of the layer of ink that is in contact with the paper. But some sheening inks are poorly made and never really dry completely, so the ink will stay sticky for hours or days, especially when it's heavy.
      There is a second category of fountain pen inks, incidentally: pigment inks. Pigment inks use microscopic pigment particles suspended in water (rather than dissolved), and when they dry one something, they stick there... permanently. So, they're excellent for signing documents or writing permanent notes, but there is a bit of danger that if you let them dry out in your pen, it can clog up the pen and be very hard (or impossible) to clean out.

    • @scrappy3759
      @scrappy3759 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, I didn’t know about pigment inks either. That could be a frustrating lesson to learn!

    I’ve never seen those triangle-y bottles. Weird and cool.
    The plastic squeaking was a bit hard on the ears. I wish there was phone tech or YT tech that filters out the squeak.

    • @thewetpen
      @thewetpen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those particular bottles are pretty cool. Being wedge shaped, if you have 8 bottles you can form a whole pie of ink on your desk, which is kinda fun. And since they're the same bottles used for the Diamine 150 year anniversary inks, you can mix and match in your "pie".

  • @satarayalis
    @satarayalis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What pen/nib do you use for writing samples? My Safari [M] doesn't show anywhere near the amount of sheen you're getting.

    • @thewetpen
      @thewetpen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used a few different ones: an FPR flex nib, a medium Faber-Castell, a glass dip. What makes the most difference, though, is the paper. This was probably Triomphe or Tomoe River

    Interesting you did a smear test with the Diamine inks. Do you have previous experience with Diamine sheening inks never fully drying? I have had horrible luck in the past with their blue sheening inks smearing everywhere long after the ink has dried. Sargasso Sea is one that comes to mind immediately.
    Nice to see a fountain pen "lover" that actually has good pennmanship! It astounds me how much time and effort some people put into collecting and acquiring, but would not give any effort whatsoever to just practice a bit with the tools they have acquired.

    • @MatthewGore
      @MatthewGore 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I haven't actually had any particular problem with Diamine inks in the past, but I have with Organics Studio and Krishna and some others. I generally just take it as going with the territory with heavy sheening inks, which is why I was a little surprised that these ones (especially Maureen) didn't smear. I bought a random pair of Chinese sheening inks a few weeks ago, and I really like the inks, but I did some swabs of them on a Friday, and one of them hadn't dried when I came back to check on it on Monday... and it never really did, as far as I know. I think I chucked it after a few more days.

      @@ameliabuns4058 Some of them certainly do. I've had good luck with inks like "Polar Glow" not smudging at all, as long as my hands are dry. Some of my Organics Studio inks do smudge, even days later, for no good reason, though.
