    Hmm...with all the 'shimmer' and sparkle inks being produced this subject should be revisited as two distinct and separate divisions: sheen (a color shift) and sparkle (glitter.)
    Love these videos. They're very helpful when choosing ink!

      They do have a shimmer video too, although another video with specificity sheening AND shimmering inks then remake the other two so they don’t have ones with both properties could be a good idea

    I absolutely love the inks with secondary color to them, this and flex nibs seem to be the best thing about fountain pens. I just got into it, but it's definitely something that will keep me hooked on fountain pens

    I picked up a bottle of J. Herbin 1670 Emerald of Chivor on your recommendation. I've used it in dip pens and my Cross Townsend, and it is truly astounding ink. You are right--it sheens best on non-absorbant papers, but even on very absorbent papers like cotton rag printmakers paper, or high-cotton stationary like Southworth Laid bond, it has beautiful color variation (but you DO lose almost all the red notes).
    I'm planning to get some J Herbin Bleu Ocean and Rouge Hematite soon as well, to spice up my journal work, and to use for calligraphy. Thanks for the recommendations!

    Hi Brian, Rachel and the rest of the awesome crew! Firstly, thank you so much for all your work and enormous effort to make us, pen and inks addicts, very happy! Second, I have accidentally discovered another sheening ink. Diamine Blue Velvet. It hasn't got a sparkling solid particles as such but it has a bit of a burgundy sheen to it. I discovered this beauty after i inked up my Noodles Ahab (cheers to Nathan! I believe that it was him who started all the affordable flex pen? 👍🏻). I just wanted to see what the shading of this was like, brought it paper to the light and Bingo! I saw it. So I thought that i ought to share it with you and my fellows pen and inks addicts. On the last note, please don't run out on the pilot decimo vanishing point, the red one, with medium nib. I am currently saving my pennies to acquire THAT PEN. 🤣 From your company, obviously, as you are so helpful and so passionate about everything to do with pen, inks and paper. I am so grateful for you educating us. So i am more than happy to support your business, even though i live in England. THAT PEN will be ordered from you 😎, at some point. There will be a story attached to this purchase, i tell you when i order THAT PEN, if i may. 🤣 All the best, and, please keep fuelling our addiction! PS i hope I haven't bored you to death. 😂

      Thanks for the comment & support! Yeah, Blue Velvet is an amazing ink, love the red sheen that comes through it. Compliments the vibrant blue well. Diamine Oxford Blue is similar but with a navy blue & red sheen. We have good stock on the Decimo so you should be fine whenever you're ready! :) - Colin

    Thanks Brian, that was an interesting run through and the photography was top notch. Sheening inks really aren't my thing, but I think I mentioned an unlikely personal favourite in a comment after the shading inks video, which is good old Waterman Blue Black. Or whatever they call it nowadays. It takes a wet pen to bring out the red sheen, but it's quite striking without being full-on psychedelic - low maintenance, too.

    I know that not everybody likes it and/or find it boring, but i have notice a really nice purple metallic like sheen in Pelikan 4001 Turquoise ink, i mean, it is not always there, kind of when the ink really saturates the feed, but it is awesome. And since that ink is on my Pelikan 150 veins permanently, i use it a lot, i love this ink. (Sorry for this quite por exhibition of written english, and Greetings from Mexico City.

    What is your opinion on Schollershammer paper? Price/Quality... I've been using it for quite a while now and I think it's really good for practicing calligraphy since it's incredibly thin (so you can see through) and still holds the ink very well. What would be the next "upgrade" you could recommend?

    I am using J.Herbin Emerald of Chivor in my Noodler's Konrad on Rhodia notepad paper, not even the slightest bit of sheen. Is there something else I need to be doing? My pen is writing very wet and ink is pooling. I have got sheen from Diamine Sargasso Sea and even a tiny bit of black sheen from Diamine Macassar but none from this famously sheeny ink! Sorry about the shipping delay, we are down quite a few people due to summer vacations and a huge launch of the J. Herbin ink. The larger dip pen is definitely more comfortable for longer use. I'd recommend using an inkwell (www.gouletpens.com/ink-miser/c/462) for the dip pen if you're using it for an hour or so. Just pour a little in so you're only using what you need and not drying out the whole bottle. - Colin

    i have a question about inks with a particulate inside: do the shimmering particles detach from the writing over time (like metallic sharpies on paper for example) ending up on the back of the previous page, on your fingers etc?
    i know that's not the case for inks with a sheen (and no particles) because the sheen is just the result of a chemical reaction, basically the ink ''activates'' itself with humidity in the air, splitting itself in different hues.

    • @homocannibals309
      @homocannibals309 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      you probably got an answer by now, but i bought 2 diamine shimmertastic inks last week, and the shimmer does detach. /^: for reference, i used a j. herbin glass pen on tomoe river paper. (too worried about gunking up a pen lol!) it transferred across to the opposing page, as well as onto the side of my writing hand. )^: there's still shimmer on the ink on the page, though! it didnt come off completely, but some shimmer did come off.

  • @shikkokuKori
    @shikkokuKori 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    i'm looking into getting some of the diamine shimmertastic inks. (that j. herbin emerald tho.. ugh why's it have to be sooooo pretty!) most of my pens are fine to extra fine nib, and i kinda don't want to invest in any broader nibbed pens. will a noodler creaper flex and a waterman medium nib produce the shimmery results for these inks with particulate matter? also, when will you be restocking the diamine shimmertastics?

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Brian, Are these inks waterproof? I have only recently purchased fountain pen inks. Unfortunately small droplets of water sprayed on my journal which caused my ink to run all over the page. Since this is a new obsession I am not sure how common this problem is. I don't regular spray my page with water. My regular ballpoint pens don't or might slightly smear. Thank you.

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, none of these are really waterproof at all. I find that sheening properties are not often in congruence with permanence! There are other inks that are better for that, like Noodler's bulletproof inks, De Atramentis Document Inks, and Platinum pigmented inks. -Brian

    i have the stormy grey, used it for about 6 months now, and ive noticed lookign back on old writings, that the gold seems gone, no longer can i get it in the light to show up its just the grey. Is this something common with the JH inks with sheen? like the actual metal flake wiping away?

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Opticalshadow that's actually a great question, and you're the first I recall that's observed that. I will honestly have to investigate it a little more. I personally have years-old writing samples of Rouge Hematite that are still sheen-tastic, the other 3 haven't even been out a full year yet so the long-term effects of the ink on the paper are sort of yet to be seen. -Brian

      +Brent Longstaff I think what you're looking for are probably fixatives. They're sold at pretty much any art store in spray cans and come in matte or gloss finishes (not too expensive either, usually around $10). I've never used them on fountain pen ink before and have no clue how they'd affect the sheening properties, but I use Krylon fixative on my pencil art all the time.

      Matte uv blocking aerosol for inkjet or liquid/wet application. It's similar to spray paint but will not cause color bleeding. Also use a coated type non-textured matte finish. Are used to work for a digital printing company, and I see on a lot of these videos people throwing out brand-name "xxxxx or xxxxx" of paper, when it's not so much about brand as it is the finish of the paper. If you have access to a digital printing company go in and ask for a sample of 70 pound matte text. It's finish is perfectly smooth but since it is coated paper your ink will not sink in, nor gather in the texture like it would A linen finish. I would describe 70 pound matte text higher quality coffee-table book feel. If you go lighter weight to 50 pounds that is almost like junk mail flyer thin, or if you go up to 100 pounds that weight is similar to cheap the photo paper.
      To prevent smearing and fading the spray I would suggest is available from USCutter "ClearJet liquid laminate" for die-based, water sensitive inks and solvent based inks in the aerosol application (like a spray-paint). It is available in satin and gloss finishes. Satin would be best to show off the sheening inks, the gloss will have a metallic photo paper look and the entire sheet will be shiny.

    I just recently bought the J Herbin 1670 anniversary ink from your page and I wanted to use it sometime soon for a piece I'd like to make for a friend.
    I have a pilot CUSTOM 912 with an FA nib that I'd like to put it into.
    My one question is would it be a good idea to do it in my CON-70 converter I have in there OF should I purchase another pen like a TWSBI diamond pen to use it in?

      Some inks are more expensive because of the quality of the bottle that they use. Also, some are limited edition which factors in as well. In general, I recommend trying ink samples when you're trying to find the exact color of something, much more economical. - Colin

    • @AmyMirandaBeauty
      @AmyMirandaBeauty 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      i considered that, but I did not want to do that. I saw the 10 ml bottles as opposed to the 2 ml samples that you are offering but someone had commented in a review that the 10 ml bottle tipped and the ink was all over the place, so i thought maybe the shape of the 10 ml bottle is a long neck bottle not practical and can be messy.. i will stick to the regular size bottles. so it is mostly the glass containers that are expensive.. i saw that you are also selling those empty for a reasonable price like $6 each.. not a bad idea. how about asking customers to recycle and send you the empty bottles, i am sure some people throw them out not realizing the value of it. xo

      Not all sheening inks get clogged easily, usually just the ones with gold flakes in it like the J. Herbin 1670 inks in which case you have to maintain a pretty regular cleaning schedule. . That said, I know Brian uses the Lamy Al-Star for testing out inks because the nib/feed are easily removable and easy to clean, so that's definitely a good option. - Colin

    Why does the 1670 Rouge Hematite gunk up my pen if I haven't used it in a couple of days? There is always residue on the feed and nib whenever I use it after a few days of it not being used. It means having to clean the pen again. I'm reluctant to try any of those other special edition inks if that gold stuff is contributing to this.

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @sashineb.2114

      +lesslighter H, and thanks. I don't know if my bottle is from the first generation, but it's very possible. I think I got it fairly soon after it was released. But it makes a real mess of my pens, regardless of what pen I use. The nib and feed will get these globs of particles that make using the pen impossible unless it is thoroughly cleaned. I like the Emerald shade but I think I'll pass on any more of these special edition inks.

    • @sashineb.2114
      @sashineb.2114 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +lesslighter Thanks, I will use the Rouge with a dip pen from now on. I will be easier to clean. The slimy residue (sludge) that the ink leaves on my fountain pens is disgusting. I suspect there will be permanent staining issues, too, as someone else experienced on Fountain Pen Network. Oh, well, I've used it only in cheaper pens (thankfully.)

    I second the fact that these inks (especially the J. Herbin 1670 series) tend to be much higher maintenance with flow issues. In fact, the J. Herbin Rouge Hematite is so thick that I can use it in a dip pen without modification. But man does the ink sheen in a flexible dip pen; it looks gold with a hint of red, and it's so thick it dries with palpable topography.
    Another ink similar to Diamine Majestic Blue and Private Reserve Electric DC Blue is the Sailor Jentle Sky High which is now unfortunately discontinued. They have replaced it with the Sailor Souten, and while I haven't used that ink, I can say the original Sailor Jentle Sky High was a gorgeous deep blue with red sheen, especially in a the flexible Noodler's Ahab.
