YES, i miss the glory days of Asphalt 8. They made too many changes to the progression of the game to the point where its practically unplayable. If you didnt unlock some of the cars before they made all of the changes that they did, you're basically sh*t out of luck lol. The only thing that still stands in the game to this day is the actual gameplay itself, which makes sense as thats the only thing in the game that they haven't touched. I've unlocked at least half of the cars in the game so i have the ability to enjoy the gameplay whenever i wish just for nostalgia sake.

I think another issue is people are now focused on the amount of skill something takes, rather than how much fun you have. I wish there were more arcade racers because I don’t have the time, patience, money, or interest in simulation racers to do anything with them. I just feel overall everything is too based on realism now.

like sure some of them have a good sense of speed but theres just not much going on as opposed to games like burnout where there was more to do than just race

It doesn't help that the Racing Game Community is now seemingly addicted to sim racing in the exact same car on the exact same track without ever questioning it. It's as if the loss of big-time arcade racing games led to a lot of complecancy, where there isn't enough outcry for beloved franchises to come back, but that's how I view it.

While I do agree that mobile gaming definitely is a significant factor in why arcade racers are basically dead, the bigger issue is far more obvious - there simply isn't a big enough audience willing to pay for them. While we can look at the failure of something like Onrush and just say it's because of mobile games being popular now, the fact of the matter is A LOT of arcade racers have been categorical financial failures or didn't make anywhere near enough to warrant continued investment for over a decade now. Blur, Split/Second, ModNation Racers, Motorstorm Apocalypse, Ridge Racer Unbounded, Onrush, and FlatOut 4 are all examples of this. I mean Onrush literally sold 1000 physical copies during the UK launch period, how tf does any company other than a tiny indie studio warrant continued investment in such a thing? There's a reason why AAA racing games have almost entirely been relegated to rally, simulation and open world, with the later being basically comprised exclusively of two franchises - Forza Horizon and Need for Speed. The kart racing genre is even worse, MarioKart literally doesn't have any competition and has VASTLY outsold every other kart racing series combined. Only indie studios can afford to try anything remotely experimental, but they simply don't have the budget to create something like the titles listed beforehand.
People can claim that games like Burnout Paradise Remastered, WipeOut: Omega Collection and CTR Nitro-Fuelled were successes, and they were. But you also have to look at what kind of projects they are - remasters/remakes of games that already existed and have significant nostalgia associated with them. This means that they cost significantly less, and primarily targeted people who had already played these games back in the day. They were ultimately LOW RISK because it generally takes far less time to remaster or even remake something that already exists instead of building something new from scratch. Burnout Paradise probably sold perfectly fine for a barebones remaster, but for a brand new AAA racing game in 2018? Fuck no. Same with Omega Collection, is it any wonder that WipeOut: Rush is a (presumably) free to play mobile game with microtransactions? Most of the studios that made these classic arcade racers simply don't exist anymore. Bizarre Creations, Black Rock, Evolution, Bigbig, Sony Liverpool, United Front, Eat Sleep Play and Pseudo Interactive are just some that have all been buried for many years now. Even Ghost Games that made the recent NFS titles were shut down by EA last year.
I simply don't see this ever returning to how it used to, the market has changed and the audience that still has the passion just simply isn't there anymore.

Anybody who says arcade racing games take no skill has never played Motorstorm. The last third of that game almost gave me an aneurism. Sure, part of it was rubberbanding, but all racing games have that. The thing about Motorstorm is all about boost control, mastering the physics, knowing where each and every pebble on the tracks are, and learning when you should fight or back off from the bigger cars. Also, there are 7 vehicle classes that take advantage of different terrain types. Mudpluggers and big rigs zoom through mud whereas buggies and rally cars slip and slide. There is a lot more to this game than putting the pedal to the metal until you win.
And just to be clear, a lot of what I said applies to many other arcade racing games too. They’re not mindless, they all have their learning curves, and they just look and play a lot more fun than sims.

  • @f11bot

Arcade is now on mobile, and mobile has lower quality standards, plus the exploitative money grabbing methods. It’s a sad situation. Because these exploitative methods now are starting to affect console games as well, games shouldn’t in general seen as a service, but as a product instead… it’s just degrading it’s value.
The example to follow would be psp games, they could be possible on mobile, if there wasn’t a push for freemium games. Since I’ve tried real racing 3 back in the day I just wished it had a paid version (and better physics).
I sincerely just hope stuff gets better: Game Demos instead of freemium games. And better store selection, not a bunch of crappy clones everywhere, I swear where is the standards with mobile gaming!?

I think a lot of this has to do with the simple fact that the Kids from back then are now all adults.
As we get older our tastes change, sure not everyone gravitates away from the simpler pick up and play style games, moving on to more sim-like titles but, a LOT do just that..
Piss poor decisions on the part of many developers also pushed many players away from the genre too.
Take the Grid series for example, a series with a major identity crisis every title.
The original was utterly PACKED from day 1 till Codies killed the online servers, even then diehards found ways around that with the likes of Gameranger, Hamachi and Tunngle.
The fans of Grid 1 were greatly disappointed with Grid 2 with it's drift to win physics in racing (even the fwd cars were faster sideways through the turns) and the tea-tray on ice drift physics.
Paradoxically a whole raft of people LOVED Grid 2 and it sold around 20 million copies iirc.
When Grid Autosport arrived and returned to a more grip racing style many of those who'd abandoned Grid 2 stayed away as did many of those who loved Grid 2, resulting in sales of around half that of Grid 2, this "failure" resulted in 60% of the dev team being canned.
GRID 2019 did little to alleviate this, with less content than Grid 1, no drift, no derby plus a PLETHORA of problems that Codies flat out refused to fix, plus the decision to put it on sale less than 1 month after launch just ended up pissing players off who paid full price for it. Net result sales of between 300,000 to 2,300,000 depending on where you look.
Then we end up with GRID Legends... Unable to draw even 500 players online at launch (Grid 2 had over 7,500 on launch day, Grid Autosport had 3,500, GRID 1,000 seeing the pattern here?).
Each game drew successively less players because Codies continually ignored their fans each game.
Net result? Codies desperately bought studios left and right, Evolution Studios (Driveclub), SMS (Pcars) who produced the bombs Onrush and PC3 respectively after their acquisitions and we ALL know how well THAT went!
The situation at Codies got SO bad they dumped their forums not once but TWICE to bury the bad press... Their current forums are a desert in comparison to the 2000's...
Net result? Codies put themselves up for sale, Tencent bid $750,000,000 only to be outbid by EA to the tune of $1,200,000,000 (makes a change for EA to be ripped off instead of ripping off it's customers lol).
Oh how the mighty have fallen!

I'm an adult and I couldn't be more bored with realistic racing sims. I've gotten into sim racers and used to spend quite a lot of time with them. But my preference for aggressive arcade style driving has steadily remained ever since I started playing games. I enjoyed sim racers for quite a while but even in them I always played dirty and aggressive. It was always no holds barred for me because I still saw it as just a game. Needless to say, I didn't make many friends, haha. I was even annoyed by the overly clean driving of some people. Anyway, after a while, I started seeing how generic and lifeless sim racers are. They feel like a waste of time and so unfulfilling. These days, I really want some energy and badass fun in my games more than ever. Everything is so overly realistic and boring. PSA "Ridge Racer Unbounded" despite having the Bandai Namco logo was NOT and NEVER made by Bandai or Namco or Bandai Namco, it was made by Bugbear who approached BN with their idea of their game with the BN IP name slapped on it... they, as in Bugbear got away with it, and it turned out none of us Ridge Racer fans ever believed RRU was a true Ridge Racer game and that means that you should never list that game as some type of entry... that game does not exist.
Also smartphone games eroded most portable and console games in general... they are not the root cause however online forced on racing games has turned most racing games into some type of online service racing game that like the On Rush game become useless as single player or local competitive racer games.
