What a delight to hear the great Oistrakh and master cellist Knushevitsky with that muscular Russian sound and passion. It is also good to be reminded of Schumann's genius. Yes, so many progressions and poignant effects are found elsewhere in his output, but it is still a gorgeous piece. I particularly enjoyed the fugue in the last movement, bringing all the themes home in most dramatic fashion. I can't figure out why the Piano Quintet has so eclipsed this pf quartet, but I guess that is the verdict of history. Still, the orphan pieces deserve their day too. Oh-and the adagio is really an example of how Oistrakh's art knows just what to do with Schumann's exquisite cantilena. When this website uses its platform to introduce us to a neglected gem, I have only one word-Grazia!
I never knew about this one or the trios . Always one hears the great quintet ! The slow movement and that dancing 3/4 3rd mov. has neat thing the piano going up while other lower lines rises in the finale ! Must hear thhe trios !

What a magnificent recording ! I am very fond of this piece and Oistrakh and Knushevitzky’s playing in the slow movement is simply heavenly !
