How To: Patch an Inflatable SUP Board

  • Inflatable SUP boards are tough, but if you do get a hole or tear it's important to know how to fix it. For boards made of PVC or urethane-coated material, Clifton Urethane Adhesive is a great glue for applying a patch. Sometimes damage takes the form of abrasion to the coating, rather than a puncture. Fixing this can be done by painting on a coating of Aquaseal Adhesive, an abrasion-resistant, flexible urethane material. This video gives step-by-step instructions on applying both these repair solutions.

    I have a gash that is about 2 inches long. Immediately next to the fin is attached to the board. Mine is the body glove performer. It’s an older model and the fins look like they’re just glued or attached to the board. They don’t come out. the rip is right next to where those are attached the board the only way to patch. It is going to be with a patch that goes from the soft flexible material of the board and then go onto the hard plastic of the fit itself. I don’t know if if that’s even possible.

    If I want to reinforce a scratched/slightly worn area with aquaseal as shown, can I paint the aquaseal over a few smaller areas I’ve already used aquaseal on? I had a few scratched areas I used aquaseal on as shown in the video, but I think I’d like to use aquaseal on that whole area now.

      As long as the old Aquaseal isn't loose and the area is thoroughly cleaned you should be fine to re-coat. You'll end up with a better finished product if you remove the old Aquaseal but that isn't always possible.

    I viewed a number of videos and tried to follow the routines expressed.
    The holes were pin pricks on the bottom about an inch from the seam. I cut a patch about one and a quarter inch by three inches to cover the three small leaks.
    Sanded. Cleaned. Cleaned again and applied two coats of the glue from the repair kit to patch and board with five minute dries.
    Applied the patch and rolled a wheel tool over the patch. I waited twenty hours, then inflated. The patch held for a bit but then bubbled and began to leak. What can I do next to get back to the step one? Any suggestions about my errors?

    I had a small leak under the main fin box. I carefully removed the old fin box using pliers, a small putty tool and a heat gun (I got these instructions from another youtube video). Now I have several small holes in the area where the old adhesive (holding the fin box on) was -- I tried applying aquaseal to the leaks first, then applied a patch. Still leaks. I fear I have ruined my less than a year old $700 board. At this point I don't know whether I should try and remove all the glue and start over again, or give up.

    • @NRSWEB
      @NRSWEB  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At this point your best option would be to remove the patch and Aquaseal then start over. Use a patch big enough to cover the old fin box by 2 inches on all sides. Make sure to remove all of the old glue. The area you're patching should be smooth to the touch. Feel free to give us a call if you have additional questions 877-677-4327.

    I have a leak coming from around the PVC seal between the valve and the fabric. Its bubbling. Not sure what to do in this case as it seems the bond between the valve material and the rest of the PVC material of the inflatable is broken. A patch in this case doesn't seem like the correct approach. Can I just lay a bunch of solvent on the seam to "re-weld" it, or is there a better method to repair the valve area (note, the valve itself is functioning properly).

    • @NRSWEB

      Hey Anne, sorry for the confusion. If you're applying a patch to a hole, you'll want to use Clifton's Urethane Glue. The Aquaseal is more a preventative method for places on the board that look worn or scratched. Hope this helps!

    if your MEK to clean and chemically abrade the surface before applying the glue then surely when your cleaning the excess glue off your chemically abrading the surface of the pvc again??? this could cause the material to become porous over time especially if your repairing older pvc products.

    • @ribfix558
      @ribfix558 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends if it's under a wear/grip patch, It's likely the strings may have broken that hold the top and bottom together if that is the case it's not possible. If there is in fact layer separation the only way is to slit it open down to the broken layer and glue the inside of the bubble, I would highly avoid it if possible.

    Hi, My SUP has blown the seam about 12 inches back from the bow nose. How do a best repair it?

    • @NRSWEB
      @NRSWEB  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jim, do you have a NRS board? A seam leak should be covered by the warranty. If the board is no longer covered by a warranty your best option is to re-glue the seam. Adding a patch over the top will help strengthen the seam. Its pretty common for a seam issue to travel down the seam. So fixing one area can cause the seam next to your patch to blow. Good luck with the repair.

      Does this make any sense?
      If so, does this type of screw fits inside a mast insert?

    which width roller do you recommend?

    • @NRSWEB
      @NRSWEB  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question Carol. The narrower the edge of the roller wheel, the more pounds per square inch pressure you're putting on the material. But of course, the more strokes it takes to cover the area. Our folks in the boat factory use the 2" x 1/16" tools and really lean into their work. So personal choice, but I'd go either 1/16" or 1/8".

    • @ribfix558
      @ribfix558 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends where you are using it, on a paddle board it's open and you can use most rollers narrow ones are good for corners and tight spaces . I would say 1" is best since you dont want to leave pressure lines in your glue surface that may possibly leak, on pvc it's less important to pressure contact since it is a chemical adhesive not a contact adhesive rolling the air out and making sure your timing is right is key.ta

    My SUP has a tear a bout 10 inches long, do you think this method would work anyways?

    • @NRSWEB
      @NRSWEB  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, For a tear that large you might want to try sewing the tear before you patch it. When you patch something that large the patch has to not only seal the air but also hold the fabric together. If you sew the tear then the patch is only sealing the air. This advise really depends on the location of the tear. If its near a seam that complicates things a bit. Its probably best to give us a call and we can talk over the options 877-677-4327.

If you're talking about PVC glue for raft repair then it'll probably work, but I'd have to know the specific brand to tell you for sure. If you're talking about PVC glue for plumbing parts it won't work. The glue would also depend on what type of repair you're going to do. HOw about when the leak goes through the foot foam?

    • @NRSWEB
      @NRSWEB  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the leak is under the foam the foam will have to be cut away before the leak can be repaired. Its possible to carefully remove the foam without damaging it. After the hole has been fixed the the foam can be glued back into place. To remove the foam you'll need to soften the glue bond using MEK. • @NRSWEB
      @NRSWEB  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A hole near a seam is difficult. Try to avoid patching over the seam with an air holding patch. Depending on the size and how close it is to the seam you can try using a small patch that goes up to the seam then go over the whole area with a larger patch to protect the smaller air holding patch. You can also use Aquaseal to fix the leak then cover that with a protective patch. Feel free to give us a call if you have additional questions(877-677-4327).

      Holes at the seam are certainly more difficult. Trying to lay a patch over a seam seldom works. Its typically best to but the patch up to the seam then possibly add another patch over the whole area. Another option if the hole is small enough would be to use Aquaseal to seal the hole.
