So the Ritual Master finally devised a death ritual between Age of Resistance and the film.
I was actually wondering about that myself. 😂 At least the emperor wasn't hung up like a puppet.
Well, the Hunter and Mariner have died by this point, plus Heretic, who they probably did nothing for.

@@Renkencen They hung up the Hunters body, but it is to note, that aparently was the first time a Skeksis died (or at least they were aware of) and that the Hunters body in the feasthall so he would be with them.
Thing is, the Hunter wasn't really dead (yet) and got revived shortly after thanks to carrying Augrah's essence within him.
You gotta love how this deleted scene portrays the Skeksis so well.
The three people carrying the ashes of the Emperor are the Ritual-Master, the Chamberlain, and the Garthim-Master, three rivals who fought against each other for the Emperor’s attention and affection, each seeking to claim the throne. All three carry the ashes together, as they were the closest to him.
They pay their respects to the emperor, but instead of serenely letting him pass on, they scream and yell and throw hot stones on the ashes, burning them away. It’s almost like a twisted celebration, a weird “hooray, the emperor is dead!”
I'd not say its a joyous celebration, as I've seen Funerary custims that are similar. More like a final Farewell before consigning him to Ash, a rwcognition of his Life, and a way to let go.
SK Wills Agreed. This seems more like them sending him off with one last great big praise, a blaze of glory so to speak.
They were the three in power. It made sense, even in a human imperial system. Use your brain.

Actually they were saying an honor to the dead and respect. The fire moss was to finish cremating the remains of the Emperor. It is completely honorable and a ceremony devised for his passing. Respect, and residual fear of him, and reverence to his power.
To think that the Ritual Master had to litterally come up with this rite from scratch, considering what he says in age of Resistance about no Skeksis-funerals existing
The best part is that this process isn't even legitimized by being an ancient custom. The Ritual Master is probably going through a phase and pulled the rules of the ceremony out of his ass, and I suppose they were all all so bored that they just shrugged and went with it with no questions asked.
But yet two Skekis died when they first split from the Uru, so they would have been something done.

Spoilers, there are Skeksis deaths in AoR, so the Ritual Master would have likely created basic ceremonies for them in the coming years. This was the first Emperor to die though, and given their condition was a long one, the Ritual Master likely had known that death was close by for a while, thus have more than enough time to create such a funeral
Too bad this wasn't part of the movie, it would've given much more lore to the Skekse culture.

It's an interesting thing to think about because according to supplementary materials so much of their culture is just made up to glorify them. And doesn't it seem weird to call it a culture when it's really just a group of about 17 guys?
they created a culture, skeksis have been around for a thousand+ years even if it only *was* 18 of them

Love the moment when the Ritual Master plucks the ring out of the Emperor's remains and the Garthim Master and the Chamberlain just stare. The games are already beginning...
How did I not notice that? And it's funny because it really does explain some of bis actions in the film, like killing Kira, which probably wasn't just done out of fear, but to try and gain some favor from the other Skeksis. It didn't work.
It's also interesting how they make his dynamic work in the show. They don't have him in direct competition with anyone, he just stays very close to the Emperor.
@@carlycrays2831 SkekZok was also a real stickler when it came to their laws and oaths. He was, after all, the Ritual Master, and he reminded them that they had sworn to kill all gelflings. If SkekUng wasn't thirsty for Kira's essence and heeded SkekZok's imploring to kill her immediately, the prophecy would have been foiled!
The Emperor was the first of the Skeksis to die of natural causes in over 1000 years, so of course it would be an epic funeral.
Man, I would be so sick of Chamberlain's whimper after that long...

Well if you want something like this you're better off with a Satanic funeral.
Too bad this scene wasn't included. The one shot of the Chamberlain and General/Garthim Master was a bit of foretelling of their future bid for the role of Emperor.
Shame the funeral scenes were deleted; they were dang cool. But the music in this scene is terrifying.
Requiems are terrifying and this.....this is just fine.

I bought the soundtrack on LP when I was about 11 or 12, and I was mystified by the inclusion of music not heard in the film. I knew about the funeral scenes from the novel and from the book, "The Making Of The Dark Crystal," but it was decades later when I finally got to witness the actual deleted scenes.
They are Respectful... In their Twisted way.

@@carlycrays2831 I think he took a ring from the ashes that the Emperor had. Its pretty subtle and it's hard to see because of the poor quality. You can tell SkekUng saw him do it, as he kind of scowls at him, and SkekZok just ignores him and turns away.
I read in a grand art book about the film that the emperors casket has three inward facing claws to catch his spirit if it tries to escape during the ritual. So much great background lore in this film!
So they wanted his spirit to burn as well. That's twisted.
'We know the torments that lie behind us, but what torment awaits beyond this existence? All the more reason to *hold onto life, with all claws*... No matter the cost...!'
And to think, we learned how the Emporer died, from the use of the Darkening!

Honestly, The Vibes that I'm getting from this clip by the same as the punishment ritual in episode two or three, I think
Maybe one of the skeksis will fake they’re own death and then return, what happens next or why they would do so I don’t know but it’s just a idea nothing more
Interesting that they'd show such reverence and respect, considering they could have just as easily dumped their Emperor's remains out of a window like taking out the trash and saying, "Well, he ain't gettin' any deader! Now, let's fight over who gets to take his place." Considering how twisted and evil the Skeksis are, it's a surprise to treat their dead in this particular manner.
Above all else, the skeksis fear death to the point where the most severe punishment isn’t execution, but having your eye eaten by a beetle.
They would show respect.
It's worth pointing out that even when the Emperor was just slightly more alive than a corpse, they still treated him with respect. He was kept in a clean, comfortable bed in a clean, comfortable room, and considering how long he lived, they probably treated him pretty well.
The Skeksis really aren't that evil.
@@mickeye6428 They wiped out an entire race for fear of a prophecy (as well as the uprising against them in "Age of Resistance"). They killed men, women and children of the Gelfling race. They enslaved Podlings after draining away their life essence. You don't consider THAT to be evil enough?

I like how SkekUng looks at him with unmasked disgust for pilfering the ring from remains of their emperor. Now if the ring was a sign of office to be given to the new emperor, that would justify it, but obviously SkekZok simply wanted it for himself.

Now I understand this movie much better, and what Jim Henson wanted to achieve.

I really wish they would reincorporate this scene into the film. The music is kind of like "Phantom of the Opera" meets the 7th circle of Hell, and I love it!
I've read that the music was composed to represent the grandiose pomposity of the Skeksis which was also evident in their imperial social structure and in all their ornamentation. Mission accomplished!
And I'm guessing the "Trial by Stone" scene would have come after this, as the Chamberlain is still with the party at this point.
The scene that comes just after this one is actually the Mystics honouring Jen's master. It's actually nice to see in its full version to see the contrast between the two races having a funeral.
@@justus10s Huh, wonder why it wasn't left alone then? This doesn't seem to effect the story if both the Skeksis & Mystics have funerals for their now dead leaders; in fact it's intresting that despite ruling Thra with so much twisted cruelness to others, they know how to still be respectful.
In the original cut, this scene is followed by Jen playing pipes in an extended version of UrSu's funeral, followed by another deleted scene where UrZah lectures Jen about his quest.
@@Ozraptor4 Oh this was met to be longer, that would be cool to see? If they at least left the Skeksis' funeral in I don't think it would hurt the flow of the movie; it may not drive the story, but it does give an idea of what their culture is like.

I love this scene. I will admit that it's pretty dark, and it's sad they don't seem to care about restoring this movie to Jim Henson's original cut.
at least it survived and was given a good coloring for the dvd.

jacoblgames yeah...but god damn this is such a strange and dark concept. The fact that Jim Henson clearly wanted to make something like this. It’s weirdly fascinating to see glimpses of what his original cut was like.

Well, then, he shouldn't have been doing the drugs he found in the basement.
He didn't want to go out at all! He wanted to live forever, but no one helped him attend the ritual of the sun which would have given him enough energy to live until the Great Conjunction. According to their code of honor, if any Skeksis wasn't able to attend the ritual, he (or she in the case of SkekSa and SkekLach) didn't deserve the life-giving energy.
Now my favorite scene from this movie is a deleted scene. Nice.
Omg how cool is that! I am reading the book right now and this scene was in it. I thought the writer made it up but seeing the scene in the book is based on a real scene... That is so great! And it is really creepy. Good job 😂

I had only seen this once before on the special edition DVD release. It was pretty dark, I see why they cut it. But this was part of the whole early 80s darker storylines in kids movies.
The old emperor died cus of the darkening. Let’s all be honest.

Its also the shard nor the crystal itself can provide indefinitely ever lasting life to a single being, especially by artificial means

I'm honestly amazed they go to this much trouble. Quite frankly I'd have thought they'd just suck him up with a dust buster and be done with it.

While I love this scene, I think cutting it was for the better. Showing the Skeksis are more concerned with power and saw the emperor as just another domino to fall.
Even if that is the case, the idea was to show they had more depth than just being power focused. Despite being the more evil twisted halves of a species of aliens, it showed they still had their own twisted culture and traditions. While the issue is it doesn’t really forward the plot, the issue with the film is that it doesn’t really explain the rules of this new alien like world. I personally would of kept the funeral scenes in just because they were some form of world building that the original film needed.
I think this scene now works because we have the show and thus a point to feel for the Emperor. Before, yes, this scene was unnecessary.
Carly Crays Well, it took the dark crystal: age of resistance series to really make us feel for the emperor. And I think we should give the writers of that show some credit for doing that.
@@ameliajones9827 In the book "The World Of The Dark Crystal," which came out shortly after the movie, there were descriptions and stories about SkekSo, and it spoke about his eventual downfall. Still, one couldn't get a deep sense of his character from the little that was written about him.

Having now gone through the Netflix series, I guess this funeral ritual was probably first used in honor of skekVar, skekLach and skekMal, since prior to their deaths, they had never planned any death ceremonies
I really was hoping to see something like this for Skek Mal but alas no.
They hadn't come up with it yet. We might see it next season if they do it for the General and Hunter. That being said, it was too much fun seeing them all have a good time getting the Hunter ready to be mounted.

It has more time and to be frank, Jim Henson probably didn't realize how damn popular the Skeksis would be.
@@carlycrays2831 I think he would be extremely happy that people still love and appreciate the world of Thra and all of its characters! The lukewarm reception of The Dark Crystal by moviegoers and critics at the time pained him, but it was actually the poor reception of Labyrinth that really dealt him a serious blow and made him question everything he did afterwards. I hope some part of him felt the love people would have for his more audacious work after he sadly departed this life.
I kind of liked the funeral rites devised for the Hunter better. ;)

This is my favorite scene in the whole movie and the sad part is that it didn't even make the cut. What always fascinated me about the Dark Crystal deleted scenes is that the Skeksis speak their own language, not English. So I have to wonder sometimes what they are saying and what they would have said if they re-did the scene with English. Overall a very cool and memorable moment.

I don't remember this scene. I definitely remember the emperor drying up and crumbling though, it was one of my favorite parts.

The crumbling away of the Emperor's body was a significant moment for me, in that it was the first evidence of the physical corruption brought upon the body by pure evil.
I want this to be my funeral; badass exit. Also, at least two of those fuckers missed the casket at point blank range.

That is indeed a deleted Scene. And I really hate it was deleted, specially because of this unique and outstanding funeral march becoming forgotten and took out of the movie's original soundtrack.

It's not important. The death of the Emperor is already shown and the succession shows the aftermath. It's a neat scene but it serves no purpose.
@@mickeye6428 It's true this scene serves no purpose to the plot, and including it would likely have been disruptive to the pace of the movie, but I would have preferred it stayed in because of the feeling in invokes. The eerie, otherworldly feeling of The Dark Crystal was always much more important to me than the plot. I mean, the movie's soundtrack serves no purpose to further the story, but we all agree it should stay in because of the way in conveys feeling. But keeping this scene is just my personal preference, I get that it might detract from the movie in some ways.

Most of the stuff that was cut out was cut out because test audiences didn’t like the expanded universe stuff they wanted more adventure stuff.
