What's wild about Jordan Spreaders was that they were originally designed to do this, MOW work especially with ballest. It wasn't until Jim Jordan on the Espee who figured they would be really useful with snow in the Sierras and thus what we get today.
I worked for Pandrol Jackson in 1999,which was bought out by Harsco Corp in 2000. The shop in Syracuse N.Y . was building a Plow /Ballast Spreader for the Alaskan Rail Road . The shop was using prints from one of the original plows they had built in the 40s . From what I remember I was told Pandrol Jackson use to be Jackson -Jordon at one time . I believe the Plow was one of the last projects that was done at the Syracuse shop , before they closed .
Thank you for the comment, and watching! The locomotive is an SD30C-ECO, and is powered by a two stroke EMD 710 V16 engine. It is some really neat technology!
I'm absolutely amazed by this. I had to hit pause so I could grab a drink and some pretzels so I could sit back and watch this. I'm a bulldozer operator so I wanted to see if I could pick up some more tips
The NYS&W once used a Jordan spreader to push trees and weeds away from a long dormant main line. They were bringing the line back into service. This was back in the late 1980s.
I remember seeing that type of equipment in use on the railroad tracks next to my house a long time ago, when I was growing up. They used it for cleaning up the ditches and banks, helped clear the cudzu off the banks.
Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad that you enjoyed it. While I've heard of them doing this before, this was my first encounter, and it was neat.
Glad that you enjoyed it! This was a first for me as well, and had work ran late, I would have missed seeing this! It was sheer luck that I came across it when I saw a track block on ATCS show up, and checked it out.
Neat stuff! It's more rare to catch a Jordan Spreader playing in the dirt than it is play in the snow. And as another one of your commenters said, it was originally designed as a dirt mover and trencher. That SD30C-ECO sure looks cool too. Not a unit I get to see here in Arizona. And that horn at the end, sounds like an old single chime Leslie, is my guess. Like I said at the beginning, neat stuff!
I like your skill, keeping your drone out of the trees and the power lines! Excellent footage Does your handle show that you like SD45's?, or is that just a coincidence? Have you worked on them or ran them, or just a Rail Fan that knows what he likes...?
Thank you for the comment, and watching! As razzle58 also stated, this is an SD30C-ECO, which is a rebuilt SD40-2 with a 710 engine and various other upgrades.
CP could stand to do the same work along the Peterborough-Havelock sub-line in Ontario. Nice to see straight tracks, no 6 ft. weeds and no dips in the roadbed every 50 ft.
I lived across the street from the New York Central Yard in Detroit, and they would run a scary flame thrower that burned up the weeds along the track.
Apparently you have never spread gravel before. As a builder for 33 years, they made an embarrassing mess. A teenager in a skidsteer could have done better
I just got done listening to the audiobook version of "Nothing Like it in the World," which is Stephen Ambrose's account of the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. As I was watching this, I was marveling that everything required to build the Pacific Railroad (as they called it back then) had to be done by hand. You know, the grading, laying the ties and track, spiking them in and filling in the ballast. Also making all the cuts and fills, and building trestles. And the Central Pacific had to cut tunnels through the solid granite of the Sierras using hand drills and black powder (or nitroglycerin). It simply boggles the mind that they were able to accomplish the feat.
Awesome! I just obtained an HO version by Walther's to go with a previously bought matching Russell Snow plow, also in Soo Line colors! This is a great video! John BC, Canada (nee St.Paul, MN)
Thank you for the comment, and watching. While this isn't high tech equipment, you need to realize this is a freight route, and not for high speed rail. Even along high speed routes, these use machines just like this to perform the same work such as grading.
From Pat Mccafee Alien episode to this ABSOLUTE GEM haha I'm sharing it with all my people this is serious work and solid camera work but for real I needed to see this .we are here
Thanks for the comment, and watching! The locomotive moving the plow around is actually an SD30C-ECO. These are rebuilt SD40-2s with a new powerplant, cab, rear radiators, and other things changed on them.
never seen these used for gravel work nice to have a multi purpose piece of equipment, here in the west sierras we have the rotary blowers and larger plows
@@general5104 All locations are listed in each scene, and in the start of this video. This was shot in NE Mpls, MN on the CP Withrow Sub, at various crossings.
Wow you shot some great footage both on the tripod and with your drone. It was smart to put your bug on the bottom of the screen too and I also appreciate the location lower third. I like to know where these get shot. I've never seen this type of spreading or re-profiling before. Thanks.
They did this in my area couple years ago first. Then started to lay new track along side of the other track. So might be possible they are planning on doing same thing in the area. Laying down another Track.
never knew it was more than a snow remover! Thats awesome I wonder why this is not used more often it seems like it works so well ive seen many places near me that would drain so much better after a pass with this machine.
I love these work trains M. O. W . I have something similar to this Bachmann Spectrum has a M.O.W. not SOO LINE but CP RAIL. Excellent video.👋👋👋👋👋👍✅👍 Another 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🎥

“Espee” don’t be a pansy
From the UK. Would love to spend a month in the US Rail fanning and chasing equipment like this. Fantastic footage, many thanks Sir,
Straight out of a Mad Max movie.
This is the best Jordon Spreader video by far on TH-cam!
Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!! :D
Great to see CP keeping up the Right of way... and really neat to see a Jordan spreader in action !!
Hello jo bot
How are you doing hun
Thank you for the kind comment! It was really cool to see, and amazing how easily it moved so much Earth!

Interesting to see it plowing something other than snow. Love those flared radiators on the ECO also!
Same here, and it was so neat to watch! Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for the comment.
I love the sound of the Detroit diesel ripping away to power the hydraulics.
Pretty cool seeing the Jordan spreader at work.
Awesome Work on the Intstate Lets Do More
Boy I love jordan spreaders. Saw one in south dakota that sat in watertown. It had a build date of 09/1923
That Detroit Diesel powering the hydraulics sounds sweet.
That Detroit diesel is awesome and the locomotive is too!

Still does a great job at what it was designed for!!

Glad you enjoyed the video! The video hardly does it justice; it was SO cool to watch in person.
Every new thing I learn about railroads is cooler than the last. I mean, look at that thing!
Great video, by the way!
The NYS&W once used a Jordan spreader to push trees and weeds away from a long dormant main line. They were bringing the line back into service. This was back in the late 1980s.
You have to love the sound of a Detroit Diesel screaming at full RPM providing the hydraulic power for the Jordan Spreader.
No you don’t. Worst sound on the planet.
Ol screamin Jimmy running the show, you gotta love a Detroit
a great thank you to the person who made those machines
Around here when you see one of theses working it usually means they are trying to make a line look good for a sale. Good video!
Love how that old Jordan Spreader still has some Soo Line markings! Great footage btw!
Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the comment! I heard it's former Milwaukee Road too, so think of where it's been over the years.
A lot of RR equipment is so identified for business or tax reasons. That's why you see NYC and PRR equipment on the NS and CSX.
Man they got railway equipment that do it all... time keep on slipping into the future.
Nice to hear that Jimmy sing it’s song 😃
That was cool using the snow plow for dirt. Never seen that done like that before. Thanks for the video.
Sure can hear that Detroit singing!! Pretty cool
Sure does sound good, and especially under load! Thank you for the comment, and watching!
I also enjoyed the Jimmy running the hyd pump
Wow!! Awesome video! Superb drone camera views also! Thank you for posting this video! Very interesting! Be safe out there!!

Gotta keep that water away from the ties even though they are coated. Proper drainage is a very important thing on railroads
Glad that you enjoyed it! This was a first for me as well, and had work ran late, I would have missed seeing this! It was sheer luck that I came across it when I saw a track block on ATCS show up, and checked it out.
I could watch that all day, does that mean it’s super interesting or am I just getting lazy. The old girl deserves a lick of paint, great video 👏👏👍
I have never seen a machine like that. What a deal, great video. I suppose it works well in the winter as well.
Definitely a 2-stroke Detroit Diesel powering the spreader hydraulics.
Oh yeah! I could listen to that all day long!
I was thinking it was a Detroit power the hydraulics, but wasn't sure. It sounded GOOD. :D Thanks for the comment, and watching!
Nothing else sounds like a 2 stroke Detroit, same can be said of the EMD 567,645 and 710 all GM 2 stroke as well.
Seriously on of the coolest videos i have ever seen!!!!!Thanks for posting!!!!!
Glad to hear that you enjoyed it, and thank you for the kind words! :D It was a really neat operation to witness.
WOW! One has to wonder how frequently the wear parts on those blades have to be replaced. Railway aggregates are extremely abrasive!
The rail term for the rock and gravel is BALLAST
Way Kewel! Didn't know that these types of plows were used for anything besides snow plowing! Awesome footage!

May 2-stroke diesels live forever!!!
I now know what I need to get a smooth driveway and be able to plow the snow quicker.🤣
Great catch!
I mean, imagine how FAST that would plow a driveway and all the snow it could move. Thanks for the comment, and watching!
Very therapeutic to watch! Nicely filmed as usual.
Glad you enjoyed it, and I appreciate the kind words! This was so neat to see in person, and a fairly rare catch too!

Does your handle show that you like SD45's?, or is that just a coincidence? Have you worked on them or ran them, or just a Rail Fan that knows what he likes...?
Now this is something I haven't really seen, pretty cool. I like that ECO as well
Love the flared radiators on the 45's! My favorite loco after E and F units.

@@SD457500 thanks for the info. Interesting that they would use the flared style of the 45.
Very cool didn’t know they had that big reach. Thanks
well done. miss it all. i worked on the CNW MPLS AND my brother in law worked the shorem yard on the soo.. great people.
shows how much power just 1 engine has
Nailed it!! It takes a lot of power to move all that dirt. Thank you for the comment, and watching!
I bet that spreader has skinned lots of cables in it's life.
Hi from NZ,
Anthony.
CP could stand to do the same work along the Peterborough-Havelock sub-line in Ontario. Nice to see straight tracks, no 6 ft. weeds and no dips in the roadbed every 50 ft.
Absolutely the best video of this type of operation I have seen !!! Great action of a spreader working hard. Thanks. James.
Yup saw the stains in the ballast of the old second track coming back to the surface.
I have never seen this kind of a thing in my life. Many thanks for sharing this.
I lived across the street from the New York Central Yard in Detroit, and they would run a scary flame thrower that burned up the weeds along the track.
The Jordans makes great ditches too.
All RR’s need to do this more often! Looks very good!
$$$$$$$$

These guys are real professionals. They need to be careful and experienced.
First rate footage. Good drone and optics. Quality sound. Thank you
Thanks for the comment, and watching! I appreciate the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice video. I managed to watch the WC 315 do some ditching work some 30 years ago, well before I go my video camera.
Great video. I saved this to watch again! Thanks for sharing.
That makes a lot of sense, does a great job and its not just sitting somewhere for 6 months
Everything about a railroad is huge, steel, & MASSIVE horsepower , gotta love it 😝👍
Super cool video. Dont get to see much of this work done.
This is one the coolest train videos that I have even seen!
That’s a rare catch!
That's an excellent video! I really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing these actions. ;)
Looks like a Bob Rivard scene at the end, with the bus waiting at the crossing.
Nailed it! Fun fact, Bob was a huge inspiration for my shooting style when I started doing video years ago.
Wow that’s amazing.. that’s spreads the rock so much
Awesome! I just obtained an HO version by Walther's to go with a previously bought matching Russell Snow plow, also in Soo Line colors!

thats quite a plow wagon there.sounds like an old 2 stroke detroit powering the hydrolic pump.
Informative video . More of these Please !.
Wow! Grading with a Jordan spreader. I have a 32 Eco model, now I have to get a spreader. Good catch.
It was a really neat sight, and operation to see! How did you get an SD30C-ECO model? Custom made?
@@SD457500 yep. Sd40-2 plus radiators from sd70. N scale.

She’s a beaut!!!
I just noticed the three holes in the trucks indicating a ‘40-2’. Thanks for pointing it out.
Way back got to see one working alongside the WV Turnpike. Sadly that track is all gone now. As are the mines that were served by the railroad.
Great video. Your time is appreciated 👍🏻👍🏻
