White-knuckled moments (actually more like hours, I guess) in the powerful current, followed by Maya's magical blues rendition before a crackling camp fire... A brilliant episode, and a great antidote for these ailing times!
Such sad sweetness you bring me, melting away tension, sitting round the evening camp fire. Lovely mournful sounds of music, crackling fire, roasting squash. Almost too beautiful to bear. Thank you!
These episodes keep getting better and better. Great content, nail biting currents, relaxed camp fires and great blues from a true musician. Happy Trails. Where are you now?
Love the singing! For those not familiar with waterways, if you are not intending to pass through a lock immediately moor facing away from the lock so that the lock-keeper knows.
What can I say that everyone else has an already said! Much love to you both for helping me stay sane in this very trying times! MayaDino, you guys rock!
I can't but agree with many admirers of Maya feels when we hear her play, making music and sing: It's wonderful here, where I am, but are we allowed to keep it, just like it is? I missed one little thing though: Your violin, Maya. Your singing reminded me of my grandma, Anna, when she sang lullabies when I was three years of age. Today I'm celebrating my 83rd birthday... Bon voyage!
⛵ Adventures of a lifetime. Your memories will be worth more than fine gold. Thank you for the lovely song you are so talented. To both of you I wish many blessings and safe travels.
Great episode! Maya your musical skills are so good, and what a nice voice you have. I love this part of all journeys especially because I know almost every town in France you pass.
Great filming and editing, excellent in comunicating the feeling of adventure and anxiety for the river current (really strong!) and eddys. Sweet campfire to relax after a stressful day. Your videos have improved tremendously from the first ones (which I like to re-watch sometime): I especially like your artistic approach, absent in all other sailing videos. Congrats
Loving your gorgeous voice singing the blues. Enjoying adventuring with you while quarantined at home in the USA. Blessings to you and hope you are safely battened down wherever you are in mid April.
I also have the ambition to travel through the French Canals in my 34ft sailboat. I left Vanvouver, Canada in 2017 and am currently in the south of Mexico, with the goal of getting to London by 2022. May see you on route.
I am confused now.... Your video has made me so chilled out... but also very hungry..... but am to chilled out to bother cooking????? Palermo seams a distant memory now.... :-))) xx
Just adore your vlogs.... your words, Magic Carpet, the journey is breath taking. All of it is so inspirational. I dream to follow in Magic Carpet's ripples.
Great video! Nice rendition of a Hank Williams classic...really enjoyed your version of the song....never thought I'd hear you singing Hank's songs :) I could feel the tension when you were motoring in the strong current. Reminded me of the Erie canal ...there's a spot that has a 6 knot current under a bridge and it's definitely a white knuckle experience until you get past the bridge!!
Thank you so much Tom! Though, to be perfectly honest, before your comment I had no idea this song was also done by Hank Williams. I know it from a singer named Madeleine Peyroux -- who is my all time favourite musician, by the way! I just listened to Hank's version though -- it has a VERY different vibe than Madeleine's!
Maya has THE voice for soulful sad! Loved the guitar part. Great video editing during the guitar and fire scenes. You might have to inflate your tender and use it to give you an extra knot or two. You have the life!
Wow had me on the edge while under the bridge and the only thing missing was me howling at the moon as maya sang, great video great times stay safe and loving
Yes nerve racking! My mate had to be towed through as his yacht wasn't powerful enough, lovely ballard, but I didn't noticed the toasted marshmallows for pudding hehe! (sv calico jack)
@@SailingMagicCarpet I just listened to her. Its nice but I think you do it much better. Your voice is very sultry, the beat was a bit slower and is a great match to the song
Love the blues song. I've been trying to learn to bend on the harmonica. :-) I did it :-) This song is played 2nd position on an F harp. Sigh ... for the first time every I bent the notes enabling me to play this song. :-) Thank you
I couldn’t tell if you were wearing life jackets. Personally, I would like to see you both wearing the storm jackets that have a life jacket installed. Cold water causes hypothermia if you happen to fall in unexpectedly. They are expensive but your lives are so worth the expense!
I love watching your videos. Coffee for me is good only if it is strong enough too grow hair on the bottoms of your feet. Hope you guys stay safe during the journey.
Hello u two wonderfull peopel. U r so inspirering to follow, and makeing so good videos.... I just keep following U 😁..... U r so skiled compared to u age, and making interresting videos to follow. Whis we will meet somewhere on the ocean, some time. 👍 Keep up u great work. 😘
Thank you SO much for this comment -- yes, writing a book is definitely a goal of mine one day, but not for a few more years! I need some more good stories to tell first.
Beautiful, especially the campfire blues. Just a thought - if the strong currents are indeed the outflow from hydro power stations why not travel at night. At least between locks, if they are not 24 hour operational.
Stan Moderate travelling at night on the river is difficult and dangerous - we tried it once and decided not to repeat it. It’s really hard to see, and unlike on the ocean, there’s a lot of stuff you can hit.
Dino may not have been worried or anxious, but I was concerned for you. The engine would only have to cough to put you in real trouble. I have experienced a similar thing on the River Bure in the Uk going through Great Yarmouth against the full ebb as I got my timings wrong. I was making a similar speed over the ground to you. Not a comfortable feeling. Stay safe.
I feel the skippers stress at pushing through that. The engineer saying "she canna take any more Jim" and knowing once the bows turn 40 degrees they are not coming back. Then the final camp-fire music ending. Reminded me of the cowboy musical where you knew, the actor couldn't play, their fingering was all wrong and they couldn't sing either. You ridiculed them because you can play and sing beautifully. Thank you for the video.
It’s a 21 horse power engine! And yes, ruby rose also went through France but they took a very different route - the canal du midi, which is a canal not a river. Canals don’t have current so that changes things quite a bit!
Sailing Magic Carpet good engine for a small sailboat! we have a 27 foot sailboat with only a 16 HP. Magic carpet must to ride nice 😎😎 I didn’t know specifically where they did it, I just know they did the take down mast journey like you guys. You guys must be having the time of your life in the canals, enjoy and be safe 💚💙☺️

That works . I live next to the St Lawrence seaway and have helped a few boats through . The shovels work, point is to keep the boat floating free not really tied up so it can rise but not spin . The flight locks climbing the escarpment are an awesome ride . Also a board on the outside of the fenders so as to not destroy the fenders . Those walls can be pretty rough .
Watching these episodes again years after first seeing them. What a great journey to see again!
Maya singing the blues is just beautiful. We could definitely do with more.
Totally. She gave me chills 🎶
Video's unlike any other sailing channel , always a pleasure .
Definitely agree 👍.
I watch a lot of chanell's, but maya is the best narrator & luv listening to her play & sing. be safe my friends & keep having fun on our adventure.

Just discovered this channel this morning and already addicted. Awesome content. And beautiful singing!!
And then I read the tune was by Madeleine Peyroux. She is a beautiful singer. More Peyroux by Maya, please.
the way you describe the currents between the two bridges is quite poetic. :)

In my experience it does not make a lot of difference and is more nerve racking if there are eddies.

Thank you Stephen! It's this grill here: www.amazon.com/Bitty-Big-Stainless-Compact-Lightweight/dp/B07VBT99R4
Tip for locks , too late I know , buy two replacement shovel handles . You use them to fend off the lock walls saving fenders and your boat .
Hi . Do you mean a bosuns stick ?
Good tip -- we ended up using our boat hooks for the same purpose!
