  • In this video, our in-house reviewer, Martin Stimming reviews Vermona's MKIV version of their classic DRM1 analog drum synthesizer. 25 years on the market the DRM-1 is one of the longest running electronic music instruments. Optically this update is still the same as the first incarnation but under the cover the team at Vermona thoughtfully tweaked frequency ranges, revamped control curves, adjusted levels and redesigned sub-circuits.
    Stimming puts this new version of an electronic music production staple through it's paces. Let’s see what his conclusion is...

    My first time seeing this guy - he's very entertaining. As for Vermona, I have to applaud them because why mess with perfection? Rather than having their original model disappear, forcing Behringer to do a remake due to scarcity of a classic like so many synths we know of, they are keeping the market saturated with availability. Love my MKIII!!

    I have a mk3. I love it’s industrial design. I feel like I am controlling a nuclear reactor, trying not to go into meltdown. I run it through my octatrack, used for sequencing and fx. It has the same volume balance issue, but I always start off with all volume knobs minimised and bring them up one by one to taste. A bit of compression and verb sounds great. Brilliant entertaining review. Thanks.

      @@TwinCitiesOxygen I would in no way want to answer for @ihearanewworld, but I had the MKIII for a few months, and it was fun, but the (understandable) lack of parameter automation means it somewhat suits certain types of workflows e.g. :
      - Endless sound design/sampling;
      - Meticulously recording each drum synth separately, or
      - Very drum-centric music where you can focus all attention on the DRM.
      The MKIV will be the same deal. Although I still really want one (again)…

    “Nicely shaped edge in the back so it doesn’t take more space than it needs to do it from itself in the rack!”... my thoughts on my mkiii, exactly! I’m really relieved by that notched out zone is there. To protect the fat 1/4” and MIDI cable plugs that would otherwise stick out, annoyingly. My Vermona DRM1 wish list is pretty short: “Please Vermona, can we have one of those fancy 20-turn precision potentiometers with the knobs with the counter and latch? instead of the single sweep ones, at least for the PITCH on the KICk?!!” THANKS FOR SHARING THIS, STIMMING!!

    I had a mkiii and liked it but really wished it could be modulated. I know it would add to the cost but a version with a big CV expander or midi control of CCs would be unbelievable.

    • @naveengumpeni3884
      @naveengumpeni3884 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah, i can't believe they "updated" this to mkiv and still don't have midi control of anything other than triggering a note. i guess there's at least velocity sensitive trigger ins, but still...

    • @Space_pulse
      @Space_pulse 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@naveengumpeni3884 I agree. I loved my mk3, but really wanted to be able to sequence it with an Elektron or something, so i could focus more on playing keys or fidgeting with the modular when I couldn’t be tweaking this all the time. Or if I didn’t have enough fingers to turn all the knobs I wanted.
      The only other complaint I had was actually with the response curves of some of the knobs, especially attack and decay. It sounds like they addressed that, which I love, but I’d like digital control over things, too. Especially now that it has USB. That would probably increase the price a good bit, though.

      I don't think they had live performance in mind when creating this, and that's okay with me. I say create the tones you want with this thing and then resample them into something you can tweak those sounds live in such as a daw or maybe these new mpc dawless units.

    Pure/raw is a very good thing to cut through a mix or slam hard in a club. When recording it at home just run it through saturation and parallel compression to the level of warmth and thickness you like. Once I borrowed a JoMoX XBase 09 for a live show. The clean sound at home sounded thin, weak and weird. In the club it was beastly (given you plug it through an analogue mixer straight into the PA and don't run it through the cheap AD/DA of a mobile interface/computer). When I recorded it at 96KHz resolution I saw in RX that it outputs sonic content all the way up to 60KHz. Although we supposedly can't hear this with our ears, I'm left wondering if, in a club on a good system, we can't somehow feel this...

    • @TwinCitiesOxygen

    • @GuidoGautsch

      @@TwinCitiesOxygenAnalog Heat would be perfect for this.
      Parallel compression (or New York compression) is when you compress part of the signal and leave the other part uncompressed. E.g. 50/50

    Hello and thanks for this video. I just purchased a Roland Tr8s and was wondering if you think the DRM1 would sound good with Roland? I am new to producing electronic music so not sure what gear works well together. Thanks

    I love my DRM MKIII....I honestly can't tell much of a difference aside from it looks like the 'sweet spots' are much broader maybe. It's not the #1 Stunna drum synth/machine. Meaning, it's probably going to need assistance, a wingman and it will take some extra work to build a kit. That being said, I've yet to find any drum machine/synth, groovebox, sample based instrument, mono synth, poly synth, or any other instrument that would fill the space without a second layer. I'm pretty much in agreement with you but starting with DRM is my favorite to build a foundation. Especially independent outs into efx racks both in the box and out. It's no9t the most practical option but I usually work better within limitations that are still legit in their own right. Not sure that made any sense...anyways, I love your music, your demos and the fact you gave this gem another try and shared the experience with us all. Cheers from Atlanta, Georgia USA

    I am still in love with the MKIII, especially for Tabla type sounds and playing Indian-classical-elektro hybrid music. I also pair it with the Digitakt for sampling and modern/acoustic drum sounds. The improvements here are nice, but I wonder if they went a little over the top with the aggression?
    I guess I am sort of glad they didn't introduce any modulation, because it means I still have a few years with my MKIII before I will replace it.
    Stimming, you are vey entertaining, thanks for the funny, trippy, honest reviews!

    So, while using the vermona with the digi via usb are the digitakts 1-8 tracks represented and then processed thru the vermona 1-8 tracks?

    • @MStimming

      no, its pure samples. no insert into the analog paths again

    Ich hatte mal die einzelne DRM2 Voice. Das Ding hat sehr schön gedrückt und tolle Sounds geliefert. Leider war es so, dass der Oszillator immer durchlief, also die Wave wurde mit dem Triggersignal nicht neu gestartet. Und wenn man dann irgendwo auf der Welle den Sound abgerufen hat, kam es zu immer unterschiedlichen Klick Geräuschen, die mich sehr gestört haben. Das mag bei härteren Kicks nicht so auffallen, aber wenn man da etwas sanftere Sound haben will stört es (zumindest mich) total. Beim DFAM hab ich das gleiche Problem, weshalb der für mich als Kick nicht nutzbar ist, wenn man nicht absampled, so wie ich das damals mit dem DRM2 gemacht habe. Lange Rede kurzer Sinn, ist das hier immer noch so? Oder wird der Oszi mit dem Trigger neu gestartet?

    Good video - have vermona had the sense to add the smaller 3.5 jacks for trigger inputs?

    • @musictalk-tech
      @musictalk-tech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. There is no info about it online. But if I watch the wholes on the back I guess it will be 6,3. But will try to find out with Vermona as we only had the Midi version.

      @CaptainPikant 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The trigger inputs are still 6,3 mm / ¼ inch jacks. We had a DRM1 MkIV with trigger inputs for a short while.

      @@CaptainPikant can't see the use case for using the larger jacks for triggers when most people using triggers will be using a circadian rhythms or trigger riot or similar in euroland

      @@Praparadorireally? 5U is extremely niche and I can't see many drummers having this beside their drum kit - hitting a pad then stopping to tweak a knob etc etc.
