    As a weathering agent, I use various coloured charcoals and fan style pastel paint brushes. For me it gives the greatest control of colour and application. I do all my weathering after detail and decal mode.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, applying decals over weathering could look goofy and make it hard for them to stick down well.

    i got to 5:40 and saw your plans on the wall. that makes a really cool wall-hanging, like its supposed to be there.

    I did this kit in high school... also had the refit Enterprise. They hung from my ceiling opposite each like a battle was going to start. Lol!
    Another great build.

    I knew when I started this vid, it was going to be great and you did not disappoint! With that view of it head on, in the pitch black with the lights on... Very intimidating! Such a cool looking ship, I've always loved the look of it. Great job as always!!!

    i know this video is old however i havent built models on over 30 years. As a star trek fan this gave me some inspiration. Interesting the movie cut shows the ship camo green with almost no other color, so its open to interpretation. Your techniques helped me with the build.I thank you. I just bought the 1;350 polar light Ncc-1701 and forbidden planet ship. I will tackle those after finishing up the Ktinga.

    I always thoroughly enjoy your videos, what I enjoy most is the non-elitist attitude towards modeling. I, like you, usually end up using spray cans on a lot of my models and it is gratifying to see someone else do the same. Thanks for the great videos and especially for this Klingon beauty.

    Got this and my lighting kit is on the way. Will go nice with my 1/350 TOS Enterprise. Paragrafics does have a photo etch hanger deck for those that wish to go that direction. I will also paint and detail as i see fit. If i wanted a movie model, i would buy one. To me, the purpose of modelling is a way to express ones self and creativity. This is a great build. Mine will be done in various shades of grey to try to stick to the TV model, abut with much more detail. Enjoy!!!

    You have a new subscriber. This is an outstanding build. And this is one of the great things about being a modeler, we have the right to do a model in the way we see fit and no one has the right to complain at all. as for me, I do build some kits 100% accurate and some kits I go off script on. Ive taken car kits and turned them into post apocalyptic vehicles and a long time ago I built the tank from the movie Tank Girl . Its all about what we see in our minds.
    Yeah this isn't a paint perfect Star Trek model, and I'm a major fan of all that is Star Trek. This is a bad a$$ representation of the K'tinga. Also I haven't checked out your other builds yet, but this is just my opinion.. And maybe just because this type of build.
    I like to see some of the builders assembly technique's, painting style. and any other tips, tricks, and the process.That the builder has used. I love to see and learn new things in model building. It doesn't matter if someone's been building for 20 years or this is day 1 for a builder. Ok, ive gone way off course here. My meds are kicking in. This is still an outstanding build and one to be proud of. Thanks
    hpiguys Workshop for doing this build.
    Ok I'm off now for some cookies and milk.

    Did you think at any stage of maybe running the wires to the battery pack down through the stand/tube so you wouldn't have to remove the top section every time you wanted to turn it on and off...That's what i've been thinking of doing..

    • @hpiguy

      You could easily do that by increasing the length of the wires from the battery pack to the control board.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark,
      Masking you'll find is very easy. Just get some nice painter's tape, the blue, green or yellow tapes work well and lay it over the part you want to keep unpainted. Press it down with your thumb.
      Then take your Xacto knife and cut around the border of the piece and remove the excess tape. You are all masked and ready to paint.
      Apply light coats around the mask and let them dry to avoid soaking paint under it.

    Simply beautiful. There's one thing that "bother" me tho. BEFORE you put the decal underneath, the blinking light seemed to be more visible when you closed your light. After that, we couldn't even see it being reflected on the base. Did that decal partially cover it?

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The decal does cover the light. It tints the light red so I left it because it looked neat flashing red.
      You can cut the decal that goes over the light to keep it bright white or you can let it be red. Also the base is a flat reddish color now so the light won't reflect off it much anymore

    • @hpiguy

    I think you did a great job. I would think that different commanders would choose their own paint scheme to be identified with. Just thinking out loud.

    Completely enjoyed this one, mostly cause I'm a Trekkie lol. Question though, how in the name of all that is holy did you mask that off!?

      No problem. Just lots of masking with tape and then cutting out the designs, painting, remasking, etc.
      Think I used a half roll of tape easily.

    Per your opening remarks: Don't sweat it, because when it comes to Klingon ships it's often a bit of Star Trek canon that unlike StarFleet the Klingon Commanders will sometimes customize their ships in terms of specific paint colors...(that's my stance so that I don't obsess too much about "accuracy". Paint the colors that YOU like).
    PLUS one can assume that Klingons are not particularly fastidious when repairing damage, as an example. So, "rivet counters" can back off! For instance, I'm building my first K't'inga with the PL lighting kit, and generally the box art color guide -- this will be "practice". The second kit will be lit with other after-market choices (such as Tena controls) and will have subtly different paint cues. But I have to finish the Enterprise re-fit first, since it's already started.

    How difficult is it to build this kit with the lights? I suck at building model kits, but at the same time, I've been after a good representation of this ship for years.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's really easy. The plastic goes together well and light blocks itself. The lighting kit is made for the kit, so it's lettered out for each location, the led bulbs fit into slots made for them and you glue them in.
      The lighting kit shows you how to run the wires also.

    Is the scale correct ? Because in memory alpha the ship size is 350 meters ... This model should have 1 meter long ..

    I don't know if you like model jets, but I'm sure of it. Anyways I think you should try a Airfix kit. I'd like to know your thoughts.

    It's nice when someone goes for "screen accurate" but it's even nicer when a true fan goes after making a Trek model because they really like it. Screen accuracy is a mutable thing after all. Remember there are many houses in the Klingon empire and they field different ships for the empire. They also customize them to a certain extent so....have at and enjoy m8. Over time there have been changes too. The 'hanger bay' used to be considered the impulse engine, the torpedo launcher in the forward hull used to be a sensor system and other things as well. I do wish they had done more for the interior of the hanger bay for the D7 like they did for the 1/350 Enterprise. Some Klingon shuttles, To'Duj fighters and a deck area would have been awesome IMHO. Some other visible deck spaces (like the Enterprise's arboretum or officer's lounge) would have really pushed this kit over the top. I do love the re-engineered connecting surfaces that eliminate a lot of join weaknesses in the kit. In truth though, I've never heard terms like 'soup ladel' and 'cobra head' applied to a D7 before. Had me LMAO too. Aside from your organizational skills and planning methodology, what I really like about your vids is how excited you sound while you are explaining things to us. That's gonna make the rest of the build a must see for me. Thanks again man. Looking forward to more.

    Before you build, watch as many video's as possible. The instructions are limiting at best. NOTE: Do not use the photo-etching, it's too hard to get right. Besides, the plastic parts are just fine.

    1:21 shameful. I expect this to be accurate down to the atoms of the model used in the film. Every ship would be different as the klingons tend to be quite grimy. Great video

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man. I agree. You'll never please some, but those folks rarely build anyway they just complain and complain.
      As a Trek fan that loves the shows and movies, I think it's an awesome kit and anyone that sees it knows exactly what it is.

    • @davidowen2923
      @davidowen2923 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hpiguy no pun intended but I can't see the logic in complaining. I really love watching videos of model making and since Klingons don't know how to treat their ship's every one of them is going to be different like I said. I plan on getting this model kit myself at some point and will attempt as much accuracy that I feel like. Thanks again
