  • In today’s video I’m taking some upcycled glass bottles and completely transforming them using air dry clay. At least, that’s the plan. Things head toward DIY fail land but I kinda reign it in at the 11th hour.
    This DIY was a journey.
    They might not have the hand thrown pottery feeling I first wanted but the end result is one I can live with, especially considering the issues.
    MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES USED
    Upcycled glass bottles
    Water
    Small plastic bowl
    Crayola Air Dry Clay, White, 5lb
    Darice 11-Piece Clay Tools Set from Studio 71
    Single-ply table napkins
    Mod Podge (matte finish)
    Jerry Q Art 12 PC Brown Synthetic Hair Round And Flat Paint Brush Set

      Hey thanks so much for visiting! I'm a fan of better late than never 🥰🥰 So, my husband and I moved across the country this past spring (April 2023) and donated a bunch of things. These were included. I can't tell you how they've done the past 4 months, but they were in great shape still as of April this year!

    I know I’m SUPER late on this comment but if you ever want to try this again, try creating a little bit more of a humid environment by placing a damp paper towel over the top of your project and lightly covering with a piece of plastic. It may take a longer time to dry BUT the clay will dry slower. If that doesn’t work, try putting a layer of mod podge on the glass first so the clay has a texture to adhere to. Also, try making air dry clay slip to help fill the cracks. Check your project periodically while it dries and fill the forming cracks with the slip. When the project is completely dry you can sand down the bits or leave them for that added texture. 🙃🙃 also, another tip, make sure your clay is a little bit thicker, because if the clay is too thin it will crack BUT if it’s too thick it could crack as well because it won’t be able to dry evenly. I REALLY hope you try it again because you were on the right track and you had WONDERFUL ideas to upcycle bottles and jars 🥰🥰 I hope this helps if you try again

      Thank you so much for all these helpful tips! I actually went out and bought a more "pro" version of air dry clay after this but I still haven't tried it. You might have just given me the push to give it another go! Thanks again!

    I really enjoyed this video! You were completely honest in admitting that your projects had some issues, and I really appreciated that from you. Lot's of folks on social media and on here do the exact opposite; they hide their errors, but I much prefer your honesty any day. It's encouraging to see that influencers have issues too.
    I think that I know the reasons your projects cracked so badly.
    I think your issue with the clay at first was the application of a bit too much water. With Air dry clay it's best to only use very small amounts of water to smooth it out or to join pieces together; unless it gets dry; in which case, a tiny bit of water should be worked into the clay until it stops feeling stippery.
    The next thing I think that went against you, is that you used a solid object as the form to put the clay onto. The clay naturally couldn't make the bottle contract,, so instead the clay just cracked as the water evaporated. Air dry clay shrinks by roughly 20% as it dries.
    Lastly, with a climate that is as hot as it sounds like yours is, the clay should be made to dry slower by covering the project with a loose sheet of plastic, therefore the clay vases would have dried way slower and that would have reduced the serious cracking you got.
    Having said all that, (all of which are things I learned from bitter experience over a long time using air dry clay). I really loved the fix you used. That was a real stroke of genius!
    I generally use fresh clay to fill in cracks on my projects, if the clay is pushed into the cracks, you can smooth it out with your fingers and no one will ever see the cracks after it dries.
    Another tip if you plan to put air dry clay on a bottle or jar again; get some white PVA glue and mix it to a 1-1 ratio with water, and stick a layer of tissue paper onto the surface of the bottles/jars, BEFORE you put the clay on them. Once the tissue layer is dry, then add the clay to the bottles. That way the clay can adhere to the key that the dried paper will give to the glass. I have seen other air dry clay users do this, and they have had amazing results.
    I have to say that I think your vases came out really well, I loved the result you got, and the cracks and tissue used on top of the clay created a truly lovely affect. I really liked them; my favorite was the spouted vase with the itty bitty handle...it was gorgeous!
    You are so pleasant to watch and your voice is so relaxing to listen to. Thank you for making this video.

      Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment, Carly! Great tips on using this clay. Especially adding tissue or other toothy substrate to the bottle before the clay - genius! I'm still experimenting with this stuff and just bought a new brand to try out as well. Hoping for decent results 🤞 I really appreciate all your kind words as well. Thank you for taking a few minutes out of your day to be here and leave feedback. You're wonderful! 🥰

    I'm totally new to clay sculpting and haven't even made anything yet. I was thinking of using glass bottles as a core to save on clay. However, I saw a youtube video where it was mentioned that air dry clay shrinks a lot, which is why people use things like aluminum foil with masking tape over it or paper mache, and then remove it to allow for the shrinkage when it dries. Since the glass bottles don't shrink, the cracks form.

    • @CopperCactusCrafts
      @CopperCactusCrafts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That makes perfect sense. As the water evaporates from the solid ingredients the pull-back occurs. Clay is a fun medium and I'm having a lot of fun experimenting with different ideas. Thanks so much!

    I know these didn't turn out the way you planned but they're pretty cool, none the less! Now that they won't fall apart do you feel the cracks give them an authentic clay look? I appreciate you showing us the good, the bad, and the unplanned. 😁

    • @CopperCactusCrafts
      @CopperCactusCrafts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You know you can always count on me for things unplanned lol. I feel like the cracks added something to these pieces overall but it's very subtle right now. I considered doing a glaze on these to bring that out. Might still try it, nothing to lose at this point! Also, not 100% sure they won't fall apart 🤔 Thanks so much!

    Great save! My fave is the little jar, especially with the "succulent" in it. Thanks for sharing an "almost fail"; there's hope for us mortal crafters. ;-) Love you!

      Thanks for saying that! I was bound and determined to make them work somehow. I like that little jar too, not sure if it will live on my desk forever but it is inspiring me to re-think the vibe in there. 🤔 I might post the timelapse sometime soon. Thanks for weighing in! Love you 😍

    Following comments because this happens to me and it's hard to find a straight answer. What about gesso on the glass before clay? Also, I gave up on the clay for a few projects and used wall joint compound. It works well. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed seeing someone real that makes mistakes and moves on from them.

      I love using joint compound for so many projects. Now you've got me thinking of giving that a try on glass jars like this! Hmm, I never thought to try gesso first. I'm ready to experiment with a bunch of different ideas now. Thanks!

    I so liked your vid! and I don't normally like vids of people who laugh at themselves - for some reason, you're the first one I see that doesn't sound fake 🤭
    I didn't have the patience to read all the comments, but I have to say this: now is the time for you to learn about kintsugi - the japanese art of repairing pottery with gold clay (don't know the technical details, only the outward appearance)
    I was thinking of a way to teach that to my art students without having to ask them to break anything whole. and you've given me the perfect solution! thanks for sharing!!

    • @CopperCactusCrafts
      @CopperCactusCrafts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's so nice of you to say, thank you. My grandfather-in-law used to do pottery repair and I've heard of that art form but never tried it before. Please let me know how it went with your students! I'm so happy my testing-fail led to inspiration for your teaching. That truly warms my heart. 🥰

      @@CopperCactusCrafts it was sylvia platt who said "we [artists] don't make mistakes, only happy little accidents". (or at least, dr. google says shed said so 🤭)
      unfortunately, we didn't get to that lesson - they didn't like the ADC, but they loved macrame, so we stayed with that one.
      I tried it for my own art projects and knowledge. Tried modeling paste mixed with golden acrylic, but it didn't work that well. I've got a few more ideas - let you know what worked in the end.

    I believe that the clay is shrinking and since on a no pliable surface it just cracks.

  • @Jenzy-K
    @Jenzy-K 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    What a great finish you ended up doing!.....I have done this with the same results with cracking. . Air dry clay relies on quick evaporation (which makes it desirable) because of shrinkage it can't pull away and stay together when on the outside of an object so it cracks. I found very slow drying either a damp cloth or under a plastic tub helps and a cooler place also trying a humidifier next time to see if that helps on really dry days. ☺️

    • @CopperCactusCrafts
      @CopperCactusCrafts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much! Also, thanks for the explanation, that makes perfect sense. The water evaporates and the clay will constrict. I appreciate the tips for ways to reduce cracking. Can't wait to do more experimenting!

    The issue is the clay dries from the inside out if you’re in Arizona and you’re in very dry heat unfortunately it will drive too fast and crack the outsides try to put it in an area that’s a little bit more damp or humid such as a basement where it can dry at a slower rate.

    • @CopperCactusCrafts
      @CopperCactusCrafts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish we had access to a basement here. Definitely miss having that space. I usually put clay in a grocery bag now to dry the slowing process.
