On one side of Burgess Park is Cobourg Road. I grew up her, initially at number 117, and later at number 120. I went to the junior school there and many of my friends lived in the streets surrounding it - long gone now. We used to save our pocket money to take a Green Line bus up the Thames to go fishing. These days we could have sat in my friends back garden and caught fish. At the bottom of Cobourg Road, where the entrance to the changing rooms for the football pitch is, is the exact spot where the gateway from my house opened onto the pavement. Directly opposite was number 117, where I lived until I was 8 years old. I used to go and sit on the side stairs that led to the gym above the Thomas A'Becket, and chat & joke with the boxers who trained there. Henry & George Cooper among them. I went back there a few years ago, but hardly recognised the place. So very, very sad, these days where people have nowhere to live. Still... At least we have a park. Wow!
Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge , I grew up near the civic center and pp road . from the age of twelve . pushed my first daughter in a buggy round that lake .£50 bought my first and second car behind in twenty five minutes round the back of the Thomas a Becket . ..
On Ethnard st just east of Peckham Park Road, there is a row of terraced houses. In the middle of the block there are more modern houses, obviously to replace bomb-damaged structures.
