I still want an explanation from the costumers for what the heck Crowley was wearing in 41 AD Rome. We know he just came from Caligula's - was he at a costume party? What was up with that? Crowley having a women's hairstyle in that scene 30 years before it became super popular is on brand though.
Really enjoyed this. Another tidbit I found interesting in an interview with Michael Sheen is that something that he said helped him get into character was learning that Crowley "miracles" all of his clothes into existence, whereas Aziraphale finds all of his articles of clothing, keeps them, and takes care of them.
Yes, I love that detail! Aziraphale is such a material Angel. Crowley just wants the latest fashion, so it's easiest to change on a whim if he just miracles it up himself. I noticed that Aziraphale's clothing is often quite worn looking through history, too. His robe during the crucifixion is almost in tatters. He seems to find something he likes and just wears it until it's falling apart! 😂

For some actors it's the things the character carries in his pockets. I also remember reading somewhere that the reason you can see the work velvet on Aziraphale's waistcoat is the designer wanted the character to look and feel like a comfy old couch.
I think the pinky ring is incredibly important. Neil Gaiman has said that there things he and Terry Pratchett wrote for a sequel would be in season 3, but season 2 was necessary to lay the foundation for season 3. My wild headcanon is that Crowley's memories of being an angel are in Aziraphale's ring, just like Gabriel's memories of being Gabriel were in the fly. This explains why Azi wasn't wearing the ring before the beginning. He also asked Crowley in Rome if he was still a demon! Crowley made fun of him for the question, but what if it was a legitimate question?? If Crowley wasn't a demon anymore, Azi could give him his memories back that he kept in his ring! Crowley keeps meeting people in season 2 who knew him before he fell but he has no memory of them. Is his mind that slippery, or have all his memories been removed? We wouldn't want anyone to think there's an institutional problem in Heaven, after all
I wonder if Crowley was one of the top angels before he fell (this channel has already asserted this) and the people he meets and doesn’t remember were merely insignificant. Kind of like when famous people meet fans. The fans are awe-struck by the encounter but the famous one quickly forgets them. Just a thought.
As much as I would like to believe in this theory. It's conflicting with the time he accessed Gabriel's files. If he doesn't remember anything of when he was an angel, then wouldn't he also not remember "the password" for Gabriel's documents. I doubt he had time to snoop around during the little trip he did to heaven, when Aziraphale and Crowley swapped bodies, to know that.

Also, I noticed that he never replied to Azi when Azi introduced himself. Like, to me, Maybe Crowley thought he was more important than Azi? if that makes sense.
I love the theory that his ring is…just like the fly…a container for angel Crowley‘s…who ever he was…memories, that Crowley gave him before he fell. Azira is keeping it until he can finally give it back to him one fine day.
This is my headcanon too, although I'd go one step further: Whoever Crowley was before, he knew they were coming for him, so he forged the ring, put his memories into it, gave it to Aziraphale and sauntered vaguely downwards. When the war was over, all angels (and their "opposition") were memory-wiped so the demons forgot who they were before and the angels forgot about it, too. They only remembered, that they were angels at some point, but not WHO they were, so to speak. (When Crowley and Aziraphale meet in Eden, it's very much like they have not met before, like a first meeting.) We know that Crowley must have been pretty high up in the heavenly hierachy since he has still access to Gabriel's files. However, the other angels don't recognise him, they only see him as a demon.

@@Sendarya I've returned to ponder if the lion could also be in reference to Aziraphale having once been a Cherub. Traditionally, one of their four heads is a lion, representative of wild animals, and if that's the only symbolism he's kept since being demoted [in my opinion], it's fascinating to think of Aziraphale being subtly coded as a 'wild' angel that Heaven can't tame [Aziraphale S3 Double Agent Theory big money big money no whammy no whammy].

My only response is: Oh my sun (Aziraphale) and stars (Crowley)! This romance is written in the heavens. So much of this show is about the passage of time. Humanity first learned to track the passage of time using the sun and stars as their guides. Humanity's history, and the history of this couple are ineffably linked. No wonder they are so powerful together.
I noticed the slight emphasis on his pinky ring, they deliberately have it in frame more than once, so I would suspect some special meaning to it. It does make perfect sense for the heraldry to indicate his position as Principality. I absolutely love details like this, which most viewers would never notice. His special tartan also lends to his identity as well. Keep up the excellent detective work!
Kate Carin replaced Claire Anderson on Season 2 costume design (I assume merely because of scheduling conflicts) - and I love some of the new touches Kate brought to the show - especially the tartan flourishes. Kate also did Around the World in 80 days (BBC - 2021) -- which also stars David Tennant, and features some lovely bespoke period costumes.

My pleasure. I love the research. I used to be part of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and had some old friends that are quite into heraldry and arms that I was able to hit up for information as well.
Your analysis are always so interesting to watch.. I recently thought about how Crowley and Aziraphale have good looks in terms of fabric selection and style. It seems to me that there is a certain pattern in how Aziraphale continues to wear vintage clothes even in the 21st century.. as if this is connected with tme, as for centuries it was connected more with the aristocracy, which, especially in the 19th century, had more opportunities for charitable activities or enlightenment of others (hello Edinburgh episode), but after the industrial revolution, the aristocracy and its influence essentially died out... but Aziraphale continues to refer to this layer of the population with his clothes. (interestingly, Aziraphale does not apply almost modern styles to himself for the entire 20th century, while Crowley always organically fits into each new decade)
Aziraphale's clothes are always 100 years or more out of date (even going back to the Crucifixion), while Crowley is always at the height of fashion. I'll have to add that as a future topic for sure! Interesting insight into the aristocracy and how Az essentially continues to represent that status with his clothing!

Great job...but the figure on the fob is probably a "winged Victory" holding a laurel wreath/crown. With the wings it can be both a traditional Victory figure and an angel...AND the crown can double as the halo you suggested. A symbolic two-fer all around.

I have to tell someone what I think "should" happen to the ring. I think Aziraphale will take it off when he resigns Heaven and leave it on the Metatron or Michael's desk. Crowley will come to Heaven looking for Aziraphale not knowing he's gone, see it and take it. He'll put it in his pocket or something and in a battle or explosion or something to do with the Second Coming it will fall out of his pocket and become burned - completely blackened. Aziraphale will find it on the battlefield but he won't put it back on. He'll show it to Crowley saying "This was my ring, representing my office in Heaven. I gave it back when I resigned. Now because of -all that's happened - it's forever changed. It's so much more beautiful than I ever could have imagined it before. I want you to have it" and gives it to Crowley, representing accepting him as a demon, that the results of their choices - his choices in heaven that made him a demon changed him and that he's acceptable and beautiful as he is, and he's not changing back. And now it's Crowley's "engagement ring."
You mentioned his watch fob maybe being a medal from heaven that he only started wearing after 1800? Yeah, in 1800 he was finally opening his bookshop when Gabriel and Sandalphon showed up to give him a medal and told him he was being sent back to Heaven. Crowley pulled a quick prank with a tailor's dummy to get Gabriel to change his mind, but Gabriel told him to keep the medal. This was in the UK version of the script book.

I love all your videos! I work as a costume designer, so I'm always interested in learning more about the costume design in the show. His ring had always caught my eye. I read somewhere that a pinky ring would be a signifier of gay men in some societies, in some points in time. But then I noticed the other angels also wear rings on their pinkies (I observed it in Michael and Uriel in S2), so I guess the ring in the show is much more connected to heaven. Anyway, love the analysis! Please bring more on the costumes if you can ♥️ there are so many cool details, such as Crowley wearing a blue shirt in the 40s as not to be confused with a Blackshirt! It speaks so much about his character.

One thing I remember reading about, regarding speculation on Aziraphale's ring, was that wearing a pinky ring on the right hand was, for a period of time, a code for queer men.

Ooh, ooh, what about during the body swap, where the camera focused on Azi's right hand that was tied to the arm of the chair? 🤨 Was I just imagining a glint of red like there was suddenly a gem in that pinky ring? That was the first hint I picked up that something was off with Azi when I watched for the first time. I mean, why else would they focus on the ring like that? Also, I never knew it designated a rank, I always just assumed it was like those celibacy rings that are sometimes worn by religious youths to signify a promise to stay pure. Aziraphael must have had all of that jewelry made for himself because what understanding would any other deity have about the significance of such a silly earthly object? "Oh, we've observed humans give other humans these kind of things for doing good things, so we felt we must do the same for you. I interpreted the rings as symbols of the higher levels in the hierarchy of heaven and possibly the restructure that happened after the rebellion. Both Michael and Uriel wear a gold ring in their pinky in the left hand (The opposite of Aziraphale) and Saraqael also wears one in her ring finger of her left hand and we don't see a ring on Muriel, someone of very low status in Heaven.
Yes, all the angels wear rings. I cannot see what symbol is on any of them. I presume they have different symbols, but the same basic layout. It's possible that they all even have the same symbols, and this is simply heavens coat of arms. On the left pinky, it does have a different meaning. All the same, it fits Aziraphale better than the other angels!
Gabriel and the metatron, both being really high ups, don’t wear gold rings. And I’m wondering why Gabriel didn’t wear one. I don’t think in season 1 Neil thought about him running off with Beelzebub, though he probably thought about redeeming him in the future. The Metatron I suspect isn’t wearing a gold ring because it probably highlights he’s doing his own thing and not actually doing what god wants. But its just a guess
This was a wonderful! I have been curious of the ring's meaning, since it has been there since the apple incident. I figured it must have significance for some some plot point. Do you think the fob is the medal referenced in the deleted season 1 scene where Crowley brings Aziraphale chocolates? If so, very cool that they included it in the costuming despite the scene never being filmed! Amazing video as always, I absolutely adore your analyses! Honestly had never registered the ring at all, but I think you're absolutely right that all of this is very intentional - I'll definitely be looking out for Aziraphale fidgeting with the ring in season 3 now!

I’m pretty sure the medal is from a deleted scene where aziraphale is given one and told to come back to heaven but Crowley sets up a plan to trick Gabriel into thinking aziraphale the only angel who can thwart Crowley so Gabriel ends up letting him stay. I’m not sure what year it was but it was just before aziraphale bookshop opening and the scene never even got filmed, it was just an idea I think, if I’m wrong I’m sorry Also loved this analysis keep it up ‼❤

wonderful video, super interesting! i love these little symbolic touches in costuming that are clearly so well-researched. i think it's also worth mentioning that signet rings worn on the pinky are sometimes used by gay men to signal to others that they're gay, and Aziraphale has certainly adopted his identity as THE Southern Pansy regardless of not actually having a gender or sexuality!

If he takes off his ring as a symbol that he's finally letting go of his idea of heaven, they will adress the ring in some way beforehand. Because if they don't, it won't be meaningful, it will just be him taking off a random piece of jewellery.
The fact that neither The Metatron or Gabriel don’t wear gold rings I get the feeling Aziraphale won’t be wearing the gold ring now that he’s supreme archangel and leave that up for interpretation.
I wanted to make a video suggestion summarizing every lie in season 2. Basically it could be all character's lies, because upon rewatching some parts I notice that even Muriel lies (that they're a police officer and have been on earth around 200 years). So, it's not shocking that even the purest of potats of heaven lie. Nevertheless, there are many. And I think Aziraphale's choices for lying are more important than ever to analyze. I have a sense that he was 'in actuality' (possibly despite his own beliefs) also a former angel. Not a full angel anymore. He seems to have a really difficult time with that though. But he's lying and bribing and, perhaps the worst part is more or less ignore all the (good&bad) ideas Crowley tried to share with him. Without trying to draw full conclusions, I think he was experimenting with his newfound status and has become far less purely good. And the lies are an interesting part of all this. Feel free to use any details/thoughts experiments, as we all go through this together after all, and every single thought towards working out the details is incredibly welcome.

@@Sendarya I have another idea, thoughts about why Bildad the Shuhite doesn't have SNAKE EYES. I don't think Crowley can choose which eyes he shows people. Or maybe on special missions asigned by God herself (when God still deigned to speak to people) and it was necessary for him to be there. But now I'm theorizing. Except during the Bildad scenes where he is not wearing shades, his eyes are normal. Not sure if that's intentional and if so, what it could mean.
@@AlmightyRawks It's my understanding that the contacts that David wears now are more yellow than snake eyes and that the SFX Dept. then adds the snakey part in post. I believe Neil said that when Crowley is angry or more emotional, the snake eyes are more defined, but do change with his mood. The reason given for the different contacts was that the true snake contacts from S1 tended to migrate and look off so having a yellow contact made the post production easier. I was also surprised that David wears the contacts even when wearing his sunglasses except in darkness scenes. This also allows for SFX to not have to add the snake eyes all the time. Not sure if he's doing it on purpose, but Crowley tends to look up when talking, which is what visually impaired people (like me) do. Hats off to David for wearing them as much as he has to do.

The only thing that tweaks me slightly is that, looking at the lion straight on, ring face up it's facing left (dexter) rampant, not right (sinister). It's changed forms, it's maybe possible that it's something part of him allowing him to keep from being reassimilated into Heaven's cheer team. Like Crowley's got his snake tattoo. And Aziraphale hides it from any Angels that stop by. Otherwise, spot on and I'm all for this theory!
It is facing right (which is dexter). I should have said in the video, the direction any emblem faces is from the wearers perspective, not from the viewers. This is true of all medieval works, not just heraldry and arms. And he wears it so the lion is facing down his finger., so it would be facing right. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant, though? I am glad you enjoyed the video!
FYI, it's called a signet ring, not a pinky ring. They became popular in the middle ages as a way of signing and sealing letters - the crest was placed into hot wax, which left an imprint as it was removed. They became a symbol of wealth and status as they held a family crest, and are still worn today as family heirlooms (I actually am wearing mine right now)
The pinky ring is just saying where it is located on his hand. Of course it is a signet ring, that's they type of ring it is. So yes, I agree! But the location of the ring matters.
I wondered it it was a dragon or a lion on his ring, thanks for clarifying with the comparison pictures. However, now I got a knot in my stomach because the first thing Adam killed with his sword was... a lion. And a lion randomly running around in the desert is a bit.. odd... Just not sure if this was foreshadowing for Shadwell discorporating him or... something else (like humans killing Aziraphale during the second coming). But then again if that were to happen... maybe they finally get to (temporarily) share a body and (hopefully) won't explode. heh.
It is possibly some sort of foreshadowing, I agree. The lion/lamb, and also the fact there are two goats int he scapegoat ritual, and the other one gets....slaughtered. So I do think there is quite a lot pointing toward Azi being heavens sacrifice. BUT don't worry, we know he'll be ok! I hope....but it's going to be hard to watch. Some people have said that the pinky ring changes over the years. That it takes the current form around the time Crowley and Aziraphale make "the arrangement" mentioned during the Shakespear flashback. Did you look into this at all?
I hadn't heard that idea. I did my best to close up on his ring in eden, then again at the end of s1. I'll take a look at it in the Job episode and compare. The feathers, basic shape all look the same. If it's only the symbol on the shield that's different, that'll be hard to spot. I'll see what I find, if others have better images, and post here what I think. Thanks for sharing this!

As for the real world research, I tend to go to books, alright in this case I also have actual friends who are involved in heraldry, so they were able to point me in the right direction. Maybe the angel on the fob is a Winged Victory offering a laurel crown to a vanquisher: there are multiple examples of that if you just type what I wrote, that is "Winged Victory offering a laurel crown".

His jacket had a red contrast under the collar in s1. He's got a slightly different outfit this season. Crowley gets more regular costume updates. So I think that collar was just there in s1 to give us a clue to the body switch at the end. He so often has red costume contrasts. I'd have to look specifically, but I think it's just an entirely different jacket?
Interesting idea! I was going through traditional heraldry so that never occurred to me. There are a lot of different kinds of possible tree. It's definitely a tree or branch, though!

It won’t be a plot point, but the gist would be: the design is the Fell family crest, he sees it as a symbol of everything his family has taught him to be. I don't understand why his waistcoat has to be so wasted. I assume that velvet becomes like that after years of wearing it, but why Aziraphale's has look like that? Like that's a part of his personality? Or maybe they're not allowed to buy new clothes in a long long time? Why? 😅
In one of the behind the scenes things, Sheen mentions that although Aziraphale could magic clothes, he prefers to buy good quality garments and wear them for as long as he can. Hence, his annoyance at the paintball stain on his jacket in S1. So, he has worn the same waistcoat since Victorian times because he loves it, even though it's getting quite worn now.

If the fob only appears post 1800 it might be the medal that Gabriel gave him in the unshot bookshop-opening flashback (the one where Crowley has too much fun doing the voices while acting out a one man show for Gabriel about what a wiley and terrifying opponent Aziraphale is and how, if Aziraphale were recalled to Heaven, Crowley could finally get away with all his evil schemes Aziraphale has been dauntlessly thwarting. I still want an explanation from the costumers for what the heck Crowley was wearing in 41 AD Rome. We know he just came from Caligula's - was he at a costume party? What was up with that? Crowley having a women's hairstyle in that scene 30 years before it became super popular is on brand though.

Really enjoyed this. Another tidbit I found interesting in an interview with Michael Sheen is that something that he said helped him get into character was learning that Crowley "miracles" all of his clothes into existence, whereas Aziraphale finds all of his articles of clothing, keeps them, and takes care of them.
Yes, I love that detail! Aziraphale is such a material Angel. Crowley just wants the latest fashion, so it's easiest to change on a whim if he just miracles it up himself. I noticed that Aziraphale's clothing is often quite worn looking through history, too. His robe during the crucifixion is almost in tatters. He seems to find something he likes and just wears it until it's falling apart! 😂

For some actors it's the things the character carries in his pockets. I also remember reading somewhere that the reason you can see the work velvet on Aziraphale's waistcoat is the designer wanted the character to look and feel like a comfy old couch.
I think the pinky ring is incredibly important. Neil Gaiman has said that there things he and Terry Pratchett wrote for a sequel would be in season 3, but season 2 was necessary to lay the foundation for season 3. My wild headcanon is that Crowley's memories of being an angel are in Aziraphale's ring, just like Gabriel's memories of being Gabriel were in the fly. This explains why Azi wasn't wearing the ring before the beginning. He also asked Crowley in Rome if he was still a demon! Crowley made fun of him for the question, but what if it was a legitimate question?? If Crowley wasn't a demon anymore, Azi could give him his memories back that he kept in his ring! Crowley keeps meeting people in season 2 who knew him before he fell but he has no memory of them. Is his mind that slippery, or have all his memories been removed? We wouldn't want anyone to think there's an institutional problem in Heaven, after all

I wonder if Crowley was one of the top angels before he fell (this channel has already asserted this) and the people he meets and doesn’t remember were merely insignificant. Kind of like when famous people meet fans. The fans are awe-struck by the encounter but the famous one quickly forgets them. Just a thought.

As much as I would like to believe in this theory. It's conflicting with the time he accessed Gabriel's files. If he doesn't remember anything of when he was an angel, then wouldn't he also not remember "the password" for Gabriel's documents. I doubt he had time to snoop around during the little trip he did to heaven, when Aziraphale and Crowley swapped bodies, to know that.

I love the theory that his ring is…just like the fly…a container for angel Crowley‘s…who ever he was…memories, that Crowley gave him before he fell. Azira is keeping it until he can finally give it back to him one fine day.

His memory does seem spotty, especially when it comes to other angels and demons.
This is my headcanon too, although I'd go one step further: Whoever Crowley was before, he knew they were coming for him, so he forged the ring, put his memories into it, gave it to Aziraphale and sauntered vaguely downwards. When the war was over, all angels (and their "opposition") were memory-wiped so the demons forgot who they were before and the angels forgot about it, too. They only remembered, that they were angels at some point, but not WHO they were, so to speak. (When Crowley and Aziraphale meet in Eden, it's very much like they have not met before, like a first meeting.) We know that Crowley must have been pretty high up in the heavenly hierachy since he has still access to Gabriel's files. However, the other angels don't recognise him, they only see him as a demon.

Traditionally, one of their four heads is a lion, representative of wild animals, and if that's the only symbolism he's kept since being demoted [in my opinion], it's fascinating to think of Aziraphale being subtly coded as a 'wild' angel that Heaven can't tame [Aziraphale S3 Double Agent Theory big money big money no whammy no whammy].

So much of this show is about the passage of time. Humanity first learned to track the passage of time using the sun and stars as their guides. Humanity's history, and the history of this couple are ineffably linked. No wonder they are so powerful together.

I noticed the slight emphasis on his pinky ring, they deliberately have it in frame more than once, so I would suspect some special meaning to it. It does make perfect sense for the heraldry to indicate his position as Principality. I absolutely love details like this, which most viewers would never notice. His special tartan also lends to his identity as well. Keep up the excellent detective work!
Kate Carin replaced Claire Anderson on Season 2 costume design (I assume merely because of scheduling conflicts) - and I love some of the new touches Kate brought to the show - especially the tartan flourishes. Kate also did Around the World in 80 days (BBC - 2021) -- which also stars David Tennant, and features some lovely bespoke period costumes.

My pleasure. I love the research. I used to be part of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and had some old friends that are quite into heraldry and arms that I was able to hit up for information as well.
Your analysis are always so interesting to watch.. I recently thought about how Crowley and Aziraphale have good looks in terms of fabric selection and style.
It seems to me that there is a certain pattern in how Aziraphale continues to wear vintage clothes even in the 21st century.. as if this is connected with tme, as for centuries it was connected more with the aristocracy, which, especially in the 19th century, had more opportunities for charitable activities or enlightenment of others (hello Edinburgh episode), but after the industrial revolution, the aristocracy and its influence essentially died out... but Aziraphale continues to refer to this layer of the population with his clothes. (interestingly, Aziraphale does not apply almost modern styles to himself for the entire 20th century, while Crowley always organically fits into each new decade)
Aziraphale's clothes are always 100 years or more out of date (even going back to the Crucifixion), while Crowley is always at the height of fashion. I'll have to add that as a future topic for sure! Interesting insight into the aristocracy and how Az essentially continues to represent that status with his clothing!

Great job...but the figure on the fob is probably a "winged Victory" holding a laurel wreath/crown. With the wings it can be both a traditional Victory figure and an angel...AND the crown can double as the halo you suggested. A symbolic two-fer all around.

I have to tell someone what I think "should" happen to the ring. I think Aziraphale will take it off when he resigns Heaven and leave it on the Metatron or Michael's desk. Crowley will come to Heaven looking for Aziraphale not knowing he's gone, see it and take it. He'll put it in his pocket or something and in a battle or explosion or something to do with the Second Coming it will fall out of his pocket and become burned - completely blackened. Aziraphale will find it on the battlefield but he won't put it back on. He'll show it to Crowley saying "This was my ring, representing my office in Heaven. I gave it back when I resigned. Now because of -all that's happened - it's forever changed. It's so much more beautiful than I ever could have imagined it before. I want you to have it" and gives it to Crowley, representing accepting him as a demon, that the results of their choices - his choices in heaven that made him a demon changed him and that he's acceptable and beautiful as he is, and he's not changing back. And now it's Crowley's "engagement ring."
You mentioned his watch fob maybe being a medal from heaven that he only started wearing after 1800? Yeah, in 1800 he was finally opening his bookshop when Gabriel and Sandalphon showed up to give him a medal and told him he was being sent back to Heaven. Crowley pulled a quick prank with a tailor's dummy to get Gabriel to change his mind, but Gabriel told him to keep the medal. This was in the UK version of the script book.

I love all your videos! I work as a costume designer, so I'm always interested in learning more about the costume design in the show. His ring had always caught my eye. I read somewhere that a pinky ring would be a signifier of gay men in some societies, in some points in time. But then I noticed the other angels also wear rings on their pinkies (I observed it in Michael and Uriel in S2), so I guess the ring in the show is much more connected to heaven. Anyway, love the analysis! Please bring more on the costumes if you can ♥️ there are so many cool details, such as Crowley wearing a blue shirt in the 40s as not to be confused with a Blackshirt! It speaks so much about his character.

Ooh, ooh, what about during the body swap, where the camera focused on Azi's right hand that was tied to the arm of the chair? 🤨 Was I just imagining a glint of red like there was suddenly a gem in that pinky ring? That was the first hint I picked up that something was off with Azi when I watched for the first time. I mean, why else would they focus on the ring like that?
Also, I never knew it designated a rank, I always just assumed it was like those celibacy rings that are sometimes worn by religious youths to signify a promise to stay pure. Aziraphael must have had all of that jewelry made for himself because what understanding would any other deity have about the significance of such a silly earthly object? "Oh, we've observed humans give other humans these kind of things for doing good things, so we felt we must do the same for you. Congratulations for doing a good thing, here's a cold, shiny, hard thing in recognition!" 🤡 (Nope, not much respect for the Archs from me. Just a bunch of clowns in my book!)

I interpreted the rings as symbols of the higher levels in the hierarchy of heaven and possibly the restructure that happened after the rebellion. Both Michael and Uriel wear a gold ring in their pinky in the left hand (The opposite of Aziraphale) and Saraqael also wears one in her ring finger of her left hand and we don't see a ring on Muriel, someone of very low status in Heaven.
Yes, all the angels wear rings. I cannot see what symbol is on any of them. I presume they have different symbols, but the same basic layout. It's possible that they all even have the same symbols, and this is simply heavens coat of arms. On the left pinky, it does have a different meaning. All the same, it fits Aziraphale better than the other angels!
Gabriel and the metatron, both being really high ups, don’t wear gold rings. And I’m wondering why Gabriel didn’t wear one. I don’t think in season 1 Neil thought about him running off with Beelzebub, though he probably thought about redeeming him in the future. The Metatron I suspect isn’t wearing a gold ring because it probably highlights he’s doing his own thing and not actually doing what god wants. But its just a guess

wonderful video, super interesting! i love these little symbolic touches in costuming that are clearly so well-researched. i think it's also worth mentioning that signet rings worn on the pinky are sometimes used by gay men to signal to others that they're gay, and Aziraphale has certainly adopted his identity as THE Southern Pansy regardless of not actually having a gender or sexuality!

If he takes off his ring as a symbol that he's finally letting go of his idea of heaven, they will adress the ring in some way beforehand. Because if they don't, it won't be meaningful, it will just be him taking off a random piece of jewellery.
The fact that neither The Metatron or Gabriel don’t wear gold rings I get the feeling Aziraphale won’t be wearing the gold ring now that he’s supreme archangel and leave that up for interpretation.
I wanted to make a video suggestion summarizing every lie in season 2. Basically it could be all character's lies, because upon rewatching some parts I notice that even Muriel lies (that they're a police officer and have been on earth around 200 years). So, it's not shocking that even the purest of potats of heaven lie. Nevertheless, there are many. And I think Aziraphale's choices for lying are more important than ever to analyze. I have a sense that he was 'in actuality' (possibly despite his own beliefs) also a former angel. Not a full angel anymore. He seems to have a really difficult time with that though. But he's lying and bribing and, perhaps the worst part is more or less ignore all the (good&bad) ideas Crowley tried to share with him. Without trying to draw full conclusions, I think he was experimenting with his newfound status and has become far less purely good. And the lies are an interesting part of all this. Feel free to use any details/thoughts experiments, as we all go through this together after all, and every single thought towards working out the details is incredibly welcome.

@@Sendarya I have another idea, thoughts about why Bildad the Shuhite doesn't have SNAKE EYES. I don't think Crowley can choose which eyes he shows people. Or maybe on special missions asigned by God herself (when God still deigned to speak to people) and it was necessary for him to be there. But now I'm theorizing. Except during the Bildad scenes where he is not wearing shades, his eyes are normal. Not sure if that's intentional and if so, what it could mean.
@@AlmightyRawks It's my understanding that the contacts that David wears now are more yellow than snake eyes and that the SFX Dept. then adds the snakey part in post. I believe Neil said that when Crowley is angry or more emotional, the snake eyes are more defined, but do change with his mood. The reason given for the different contacts was that the true snake contacts from S1 tended to migrate and look off so having a yellow contact made the post production easier. I was also surprised that David wears the contacts even when wearing his sunglasses except in darkness scenes. This also allows for SFX to not have to add the snake eyes all the time. Not sure if he's doing it on purpose, but Crowley tends to look up when talking, which is what visually impaired people (like me) do. Hats off to David for wearing them as much as he has to do.

The only thing that tweaks me slightly is that, looking at the lion straight on, ring face up it's facing left (dexter) rampant, not right (sinister). It's changed forms, it's maybe possible that it's something part of him allowing him to keep from being reassimilated into Heaven's cheer team. Like Crowley's got his snake tattoo. And Aziraphale hides it from any Angels that stop by.
Otherwise, spot on and I'm all for this theory!
It is facing right (which is dexter). I should have said in the video, the direction any emblem faces is from the wearers perspective, not from the viewers. This is true of all medieval works, not just heraldry and arms. And he wears it so the lion is facing down his finger., so it would be facing right. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant, though? I am glad you enjoyed the video!
FYI, it's called a signet ring, not a pinky ring. They became popular in the middle ages as a way of signing and sealing letters - the crest was placed into hot wax, which left an imprint as it was removed. They became a symbol of wealth and status as they held a family crest, and are still worn today as family heirlooms (I actually am wearing mine right now)
The pinky ring is just saying where it is located on his hand. Of course it is a signet ring, that's they type of ring it is. So yes, I agree!
But the location of the ring matters.

I wondered it it was a dragon or a lion on his ring, thanks for clarifying with the comparison pictures. However, now I got a knot in my stomach because the first thing Adam killed with his sword was... a lion. And a lion randomly running around in the desert is a bit.. odd... Just not sure if this was foreshadowing for Shadwell discorporating him or... something else (like humans killing Aziraphale during the second coming). But then again if that were to happen... maybe they finally get to (temporarily) share a body and (hopefully) won't explode. heh.
It is possibly some sort of foreshadowing, I agree. The lion/lamb, and also the fact there are two goats int he scapegoat ritual, and the other one gets....slaughtered. So I do think there is quite a lot pointing toward Azi being heavens sacrifice. BUT don't worry, we know he'll be ok! I hope....but it's going to be hard to watch.

Some people have said that the pinky ring changes over the years. That it takes the current form around the time Crowley and Aziraphale make "the arrangement" mentioned during the Shakespear flashback. Did you look into this at all?
I hadn't heard that idea. I did my best to close up on his ring in eden, then again at the end of s1. I'll take a look at it in the Job episode and compare. The feathers, basic shape all look the same. If it's only the symbol on the shield that's different, that'll be hard to spot. I'll see what I find, if others have better images, and post here what I think. Thanks for sharing this!

I get information from all over. Neils Tumblr is a gold mine. I have a few other places I find things like the images. As for the real world research, I tend to go to books, alright in this case I also have actual friends who are involved in heraldry, so they were able to point me in the right direction.

His jacket had a red contrast under the collar in s1. He's got a slightly different outfit this season. Crowley gets more regular costume updates.
So I think that collar was just there in s1 to give us a clue to the body switch at the end. He so often has red costume contrasts.
I'd have to look specifically, but I think it's just an entirely different jacket?

It won’t be a plot point, but the gist would be: the design is the Fell family crest, he sees it as a symbol of everything his family has taught him to be. Good, kind, strong, helpful, etc. Sometimes he’ll fidget with it and remember those qualities to ground himself when he’s stressed or worried.
I don't understand why his waistcoat has to be so wasted. I assume that velvet becomes like that after years of wearing it, but why Aziraphale's has look like that? Like that's a part of his personality? Or maybe they're not allowed to buy new clothes in a long long time? Why? 😅
In one of the behind the scenes things, Sheen mentions that although Aziraphale could magic clothes, he prefers to buy good quality garments and wear them for as long as he can. Hence, his annoyance at the paintball stain on his jacket in S1. So, he has worn the same waistcoat since Victorian times because he loves it, even though it's getting quite worn now.
