This was the game where I became convinced that Tony Boles was one of the best football players ever to put on a Michigan uniform. Run, receive, return. He was the big difference in this game and he did whatever he had to for Michigan to win it. What a shame about that injury that ended his career later on against Minnesota.
I've seen some great UM games in person: 1985 Fiesta Bowl v Nebraska, 2005 against Penn State in the Big House. But this was a great game with a great finish. I'll never forget cheering in the East endzone for the maize and blue that night.
True story: I sat in the north end zone with the other MIchigan fans. With 2:01 remaining in the game, and the deficit being 8 points, Wolverine legend Alvin Wistert got up to leave. I said to him, "Mr. Wistert, you can't leave. We're gonna win this game!" He smiled and gave a slight dismissive gesture, and made his way toward the exit. It was a pleasure to run into him again, at a TV party for the Sparty game, later that season. Back in the day, the sports bar concept had not really taken off. We gathered at Billingsley's Restaurant, at the Van Nuys Golf Course, packing a banguet room so tightly that people's food orders had to be passed by hand from server to diner. Great times.
Did ABC air the Michigan vs. UCLA football game on September 23, 1989, yes? Was the game being played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, yes? May Keith Jackson rest in peace.
Does this game remind you of this past week's game against ND? Comeback win with a Freshman QB, even though Terry Donahue was 10x the coach Charlie Weis will ever be. This game showed the future for Michigan with the pro style offense that they showed under Moeller, and the ND game could show the future for Michigan under Rod.
my understanding was that in 89 Bo preferred having Taylor in at QB because he was a senior could run the option and had a decent arm. Moeller preferred Grbac, because he had a better arm. Also Taylor blew his arm out right after that Minnesota game.
Moeller was desperately trying to drag Bo into the 20 century. Moeller is considered kind of a joke by some, but TBH, he helped bring Michigan out of the "3 yard and a cloud of dust", way of thinking, and it is why we had success in the late 80s and 90s we havent since duplicated (even our 2004-2007 years didnt produce a Rose Bowl or BCS win). We were actually talking advantage of ALL of our athletes abilities.
i think the thing was that year Bo was in his last season and he still wanted to win his way, which would have involved running the option with Taylor. Plus Grbac made a lot of rookie mistakes that year.
Taylor wasn't that bad in 89, though. True, he liked running the option but he actually threw the ball well as evidenced in the Minnesota and Iowa games. The major problem was, he kept getting injured and had to sit out too often. And Blue wins the Rose Bowl that year had it not been for the phantom holding call on Chris Stapleton's fake punt.
Terry Donahue was a great coach.Still he had his share of crummy seasons.Ohio State and Michigan both had wins over UCLA which didn't look so good after Bruins finished up with losing record
That was the best onside kick I've ever seen. My senior year.

I was in the Navy watching this in Yokosuka Japan. All the California dudes were in shock!
@Gary McMichael I hope to attend at least one game at The Rose Bowl in my life.
Man...that was a good onside kick.

Yes to everything.

Great regular college football game
It could be. he was a volunteer coach in 1988 and 1989 seasons before taking over inside linebackers in 1990
Hmm. I stand corrected. I never knew that. I thought 1997 was his first year on the staff.
michigan vs ucla 1989
Love ucla fight song

When I was a senior, a hurricane robbed UCLA from a National Championship experience. 1998 Wolverines need some athletes. They are close. So is UCLA

1989 UCLA didn't play Ohio St USC killed Ohio St
8:06 Is that Jim Hermann?
Michigan ran that wishbone well. Definitely don't see that anymore.
I miss tom Osbourne former Nebraska coach old wishbone offense, bear Bryant revolutionize the wishbone offense
Defenses are too good, will just stack the box.
Just think that this is now a conference game in 2024........
I believe Tripp Welborne would have been something special if he hadn’t got hurt.
Sir have you not seen, Air Force, Army, Georgia Tech, Navy?
Nope. Kind of looks like him but it's not.
