I am an older person living in an area with limited bus service and I often give people a ride. People here don't typically hitchhike. The odd one I don't pick up if they don't look 'local' and now I don't feel so bad, but I probably wouldn't pick up someone who is actually hitching as the local kids don't do that, if that makes sense.

I love how the detective told Nick he isn't going to read him his rights because he isn't going to ask him any more questions. Takes back the power nick thought he had when he refused to tell them where the gun was buried 🤣.
Literally got outplayed. That "not reading the rights cause we don't have to" was actually a very interesting thing to learn.

@@m998hmmwv7 Miranda is a funny thing. It was intended to protect people, but police often capitalize on people's misunderstanding of it to use it against them. Miranda has a lot of ins and outs and "special circumstances," but the gist of it is this: when in police custody (which Nick was not, as explained in the video), the court assumes that anything you say was coerced until your rights have been read to you. The Miranda warning turns that assumption around. After being read your rights, the court automatically assumes three things:
1.) That you understand your rights,
2.) That anything you say from that point onward is voluntary (and therefore, admissible in court), and
3.) (this is the kicker) That you are waiving the rights they've just told you about.
After this point, you can exercise your rights, but unless you explicitly invoke them, the court may also assume that your silence is incriminating.
This is why there is only ONE correct thing to say to any officer who wants to interview or question you, whether you're in custody or not:
*"I'm not answering any questions, and I'd like to speak with a lawyer."*
One other important thing to remember is that even if a confession is ruled inadmissible, it doesn't mean that other evidence can't be used in court to secure a conviction. All other evidence legally procured is still viable. Nick obviously didn't realize this, either.
Not only are you ending someone's life completely without reason, but I will never understand how anyone would ruin their own life by killing some random person and being sent to jail. Insane.

seems like the government failed here but i dont know the full story. what i mean is soldiers/killers are always needed and even been admired in the past and to these days like the vikings who even had their beliefs all around death, blood and dying in combat to enter valhalla which we still kinda see to these days with the talibans. so the question is why r people like this not in war zones doing what only they enjoy and can do. like there probably millions of soldiers young men who dont fit the job as they might getting themself shot in fear of ending someones life which naturally born killers dont have so why isnt the government using people like this instead they send young men to die who never hurt a fly and the real killers rot in jail wasting tax money and their potential while the young men who have potential in other things have to do the dirty job

What I don’t understand about that though is in the video, the narrator says you don’t have to read the rights UNTIL he was in custody. But, they did put him custody at the end when the detective said that, so did they then read him his rights immediately after? We never see it so idk. Not that I think it ultimately matters that much, but I just didn’t get that part.
@@Nandoswitharando I may be wrong but I always thought they technically don't have to read your rights until you're being questioned. Either way, I am very sure they read his rights at some point even if it was off camera
That’s a pretty risky move all for a power trip. Had they confessed prior to reading the suspect’s Miranda rights, the potential of the confession not being admissible in court is likely. Cops with overinflated egos lead to dumb mistakes.
this reminds me of an old thiefs saying. 3 can keep a secret if 2 of them are dead. In a group crime someone will 99% of the time spill the beans either because they were offered a good deal to testify or because they think they can outsmart the detectives.

I hitchhiked from Los Angeles to Miami Beach in 1976, it took me 10 days. Met a lot of cool people and never had one problem with anyone who picked me up. It wasn't until years later when I was reading about some serial killers that I realized I was hitchhiking in some of the same areas they were operating in. Kind of freaked me out. Today, I wouldn't hitchhike anywhere or pick up a hitchhiker.
i hear hitchhiking was commonplace from the 50`s till late 70`s basically till serial killers,rapists,etc. kept ruining the whole thing for everyone and safety become a huge concern, nowadays hitchhiking is dead, i`m surprised that Hunter hitchhiked as recent as 2017.

I was always aware of the dangers on both sides of hitchhiking, but before I got my life together and before Uber was everywhere, I had no choice but to hitchhike. I'm genuinely shocked that nothing bad ever happened to me. Beyond grateful for that too

People still hitchhike. It is still more prevalent than most people would think, because we all know it’s so dangerous...but it happens.
As soon as he said “they wouldn’t talk about the body in a message” he/she both knew the police was listening. And she started asking questions he knew she already had answers to, he was sure the police was listening.
that was so frustrating! like.. if the police are gonna conduct a wired call at least make sure she doesn't say something stupid like "left me a message"
She seemed so unprepared during that call (or she deliberately didn't use the preparation she was given) because her performance was so unbelievable..

We're not talking about a criminal or something. The guys 'crime' is that he hitchhiked... While going to a new area for a new job so he could help support his child. Yes hitchhiking is a dangerous and foolish act but that's the extent of it. Doing so does not make him bad. I think people just like to reach to throw the "bad person" stamp on murder victims when learning about cases like this because it helps lessen the impact of this horrific crime and it means they don't have to feel as bad.

Fuk all 3 of them. The correct course of action would have been to go to straight to the cops. The fact none of them did shows a complete lack of empathy for the victim. Shit, putting myself in their position, I would have offed Nick as soon as he shot Hunter and called the cops as soon as I pulled the trigger. The sentencing is way too light for what he did. SOB needs to be locked up indefinitely.

Seeing pictures of him and his kid is so devastating to look at. He had the biggest smile in the photos, I can tell he was so happy to be a father.

She could've saved Hunter's life if she had just gone to the police after knowing the plan. She's just as guilty as the other two. Now this poor child has to grow up without a father. The fact that Hunter said, “Don’t kill me; I have a kid,” just shows you how his daughter was the center of his universe and he hated the thought of not being able to continue to protect and take care of his daughter. 💔 That crushed me. Rest in peace Hunter. 💗

That was my first thought too but you'd think they'd go over what and how she'd ask or say before she called. So partially the blame is in the investigator too
That's interesting though - because he knows she WAS there, at the scene of the murder. So, he automatically knows something is up when she says she doesn't know what happened. I think she was trying to let him know the cops are listening.

Maybe things weren't fully divulged with them. She probably never said anything. Like at all. Nothing not even a comment on the food being good unless he asked. Listening to her she sounds like she's psychologically abused. This honestly was probably his next step in training her to help him murder people. But he fucked up cause he didn't realize who she was deep down.

Don't forget that the girl was also hiding something. at that point her story was that she wasn't even there with them when the kid got shot. so she couldn't just ask something like "what happened there?" because he knows that she was there when he committed murder. neither could she say something like "what exactly happened there? I don't remember/that was too traumatic for me to register" because then the cops would have found out that she with them in the desert. she was in a problematic position.
She says he left a vm then says, I told him I'd have to call him back. How do you talk to a vm. Yeah they really should have prepared her for the call cuz she doesn't seem like the sharpest crayon in the box.
Nick thinking he was clear because they didn’t read him his rights reminded me of when my ex husband came home drunk and hit me, so I called the cops and he told them “I plead the fifth” when they tried to talk to him 😂

See for example the disparity in sentences (if any) for those female teachers who do inappropriate things with students, vs what happens to men who do same. Women get a stern talking to, men get a long trip to the slammer to live with Bubba.
It is absolutly unacceptable that the actual murderer only served 30 years while the others served 15 and 26. That is absolutly insane and appalling. He should be doing 80. Especially since in his own words he will kill again.
His parole term should have been longer, certainly. But, its only eligible after 30. His comments in the interview and outside of it depict someone who will kill again, and that would make for a very hard parole case. I imagine it will be denied many times, until he has at least served 50.

do some research on parole eligibility. they will be out in 5 and 11 years. and most likely the killer will not be let out after his 30 cuz of what he did.
What disturbs me is that Montana got less time than Keith it seems they were equally involved and that Keith was quicker to be truthful with detectives. Where are the feminists demanding equity.

This reminds me of my brother. For years would lie about being in the secret service, going on missions, and killing people. This ended with him attempting to murder a woman and he went to prison for around 6 years. Definitely not enough. He is the definition of a sociopath and I fear for everyone around him. He’s moved away and I’ve cut him off completely from what he put my sister and I through when we were younger. I believe he will hurt someone again. He told me directly he stabbed this woman because he was “curious what it felt like.” No normal person does that. It’s just so fucked up. Anyone that can disconnect themselves from other people and not care have the ability to be serial killers imo.
Thankfully, not all of them are like this.
The Secret Service doesn't go "on missions" though.

It definitely screwed me up more but I’ve done lots of therapy and finally at the age of 23 I’m learning to live a normal life after a shit ton of mental health issues (anxiety, depression, suicide attempts, drinking issues, eating disorder, ptsd, etc.) He was a teenager (like 16) when he made his CIA claims. He also has outstanding charges for impersonating a police officer which doesn’t surprise me in the least. He did a lot of fucked up things. He destroyed our basement wall from throwing knives at it, SAed my older sister and I starting when I was 8, drove without a license, ran from the police, and totalled 5 different cars that were my moms. He lies and steals from anyone he can which has gotten him cut off by our entire family, only my dad occasionally sees him. Thank god he moved across the country so I don’t ever see him.

I got chills when they interviewed Nick. That look on his face when he said he saw the post of Facebook when the detectives mentioned they’d found a body, and his tone of voice sounded excited. Even without context of what he was in for, you can just tell there is something sinister and dark about him. Hunter must’ve been terrified.
There's nothing scary about him. He's a bottom-of-the-barrel loser and he knows that. His acts of violence (both real and imagined) are a scream for respect and attention, things that he's been desperately craving for, probably his whole life. The local news who covered this originally when it happened had dug into it and his crew he was in in the military never saw any combat according to his military officer that they reached out to. I know someone who was in the military and he would constantly call me and tell me that the only way that he would be free from his flashbacks and tics is if we were together. We'd never had any romantic interest towards each other before, at least not from my end, but he said that I was the only comfort he had. I was married at the time and I have two children... there's absolutely no way I could have someone unstable around me. I helped him get help and get him into the VA and on medication so he could be relieved of his anxiety and flashbacks, at least to an extent. There are people who seen REAL combat and react accordingly after having been discharged or served their time in the military, and back to being a civilian. This guy was so full of it that he couldn't see reality past the hazy film of bullshit that was over his eyes. Narcissist on every level. It's a good thing they got him. It would have been in Keith and Montanna's best interest to go together right after he'd killed this poor boy, and turned Nick in. No one will ever truly know the full depth of what happened out there, but the good news is that there's justice being served.

The one thing they all have in common is that they don't say anything about their time in those roles. If you even ask them about it they just politely say they aren't allowed to discuss it. There was no jury, they never had a trial. The state was going for the death sentence, the DA gave Nick the option to plead guilty for the possibility of parole

In a nutshell you just summarized what sentencing should be about. It should be about protecting society with reform being a nice thing to try for if possible. Sentencing should be based on how much of a future threat that person poses to society. I remember a case where a kid's estranged father had seriously injured his mother on several occasions. His father then threatened to kill his mother on a particular day, the kid was ready for him in case he actually showed, which he did, and shot him to protect his mother. They gave him a life sentence without possibility of parole (the police had been called many times in the past but told them there was nothing they could do). This for a kid who likely would never be a threat to anyone for the rest of his life. Meanwhile they give much lighter sentences to people who have killed someone with little provocation but since it wasn't premeditated they were let off easy. Yet if you can kill without much provocation you will always be a threat.

If you see someone attempting to hitchhike, just call the police and say you see someone distressed on the side of the road. If the person truly needs help, the police can help them. If they're up to no good, like say in instances where a child decoy is used while people lay in wait to jump whoever tries to help them, the police can help the decoy and hopefully stop the would be attackers. I used to walk places a lot, I grew up in a small town and didn't have money for a car and had a 2 hour walk by the highway to my college. No real support system at home. Even if it was pouring rain, I never took rides from anyone. I'm sure people meant well, but you just can't trust people like that. Worst thing that happened to me was being chased by 2 wild dogs and having my stitches from a recent surgery pop open lol that sucked but at least i wasn't in someone's rape dungeon.

People always underestimate the women who fall in love with psychopaths... like they must be victims, they must be so naive... but I promise you they are not. They love being with someone that scares them. He makes them feel special because he is vulnerable around them. They can't get enough of the thrill and they are 100 percent ride or die for him. I got the worst feeling of my life from the second guy who sat directly behind me, I imagined suddenly how easy it would be for him to throttle me. I'd never in my life felt such a cold certainty so I listened to my instincts and jumped out at the first stop sign. That was the last time hitch hiking. It felt dangerous in a way that I'd never experienced.

I see your point but it is not complementive and rather a real way horrible killers can even have as a trait. Hiter and Putin could be discribed that way as well. These types of killers can exist as all types of personality traits have existed in killers. No telling what type of person can, as this is not a pyscoloical trait rather persona.

Our judicial system doesn't provide justice for victims anymore. The fact that parole was even on the table is just another disgusting example of this unfortunately.

I think that he believed picking up the casings and hiding the gun covered the hard evidence. He didn't think his confession was hard evidence because his rights weren't read.

He's killing kids and her concern first thing is "I don't want him to go to jail" after the cops called her out on her lies. That comment alone should make her an accessory after the fact at the very least. Only when she realized she was in trouble did she start slowly admitting the truth. She was the one who started out lying and changing her stories. I think she knew it was gonna happen and wanted to watch. That's why she said she turned her eyes away so she didn't watch it happen, because she knew what he was going to do. "I looked away because i didn't wanna watch it". Means she knew what he was gonna do. Keith is the only person telling the truth i think. Though he also knew it might happen even if he was confused and didn't believe him.

Back in the late 60's & 70's, my grandmother would pickup hitchhikers all the time. Especially if they were kids. Always scared the crap out of us. My grandmother had a Master's in teaching & thought maybe she could provide a positive influence on the kids to get them back in school. Sometimes she'd take them to the nearest diner for a hit meal. She had a big soft heart but boy, so glad she's unable to do that in today's day & age.

The murderer is a stone-cold sociopath. He murders a man whose trust he had won with an offer of friendly aid, and when caught afterwards, attempts to slander the victim and state that the victim's alleged actions caused his demise. Isn't it interesting that these psychos can never own up to their deeds and take responsibility -- they always have to find a way to rationalize and justify cold-blooded murder. And, it's incomprehensible to me that the perp will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years. "Life" sentences where parole is allowed are a total joke and an insult to the victim and to the victim's family members.
Picked up a middle aged man as a 17 year old girl off the highway and took him to the nearest gas station. I never felt in danger but just knowing what he could’ve done or what he thinks I could’ve done horrifies me.

I love the split second when killers know they're caught. I can just imagine Nick's stomach jumping, palms sweating and blood pressure sky rocketing the moment he froze with the knowledge that the jig's up and that his friend and girlfriend are the ones who gave him up.
Too bad sociopaths/narcissists are excellent manipulators, and they do overwhelmingly well in prison. Which is why they can't be rehabilitated. They don't have remorse, therefore they suffer no consequences for their actions. They just continue to manipulate others in their new environment. Sad, but true.
From the way he was acting throughout this whole thing, I doubt he felt a single thing that you listed there. He clearly was just wanting to kill people for his own enjoyment and couldn't care about anything else. It didn't even bother him that he had been caught or that the others had given him up.
