I wonder if the door on the addition wasn't reused from the wall where the patch is on the original house. The style seems too early for the 1900's.

Hello Robert. The thing with the machine wheel on it and the stacked up wood with the threaded rod coming out the bottom you filmed starting at 4:00, you asked what it is. I can tell you that is a center head on an old wood turning lathe. It probably was driven either by a spring pole or a flywheel. The thread stock sticking out the bottom would go through the bed of the lathe and have a nut or turn handle under the bed to lock it down on the bed, and the handwheel was to turn into the wood piece at the center to hold it for turning the piece of wood..
AlsoI noticed that starting at 1:20 you can see the ceiling of the porch was painted that unusual color of blue. That color is called "Haint Blue" That color was developed here in the area of Charleston, SC in the mid 1800s, and they would paint all of the porches and eaves that color. Wasps will not make nests on your porches and eaves, because with that color they see it as the sky.. We had the eaves and porches on our house painted with that color and we have never had a wasp nest started on our house.
The cast iron kettle is in good shape. I restore old cast iron cookware, and would love to have a piece like that. That old cast iron is much better than cast iron cookware made today.

Renovated a house built in 1872. Had to repoint all the brick around the foundation. We used a mortar mix heavy on sand content. Old bricks weren't made the same as new ones - old bricks are "softer". Standard mortar mix is actually harder than the bricks and will damage them. Feel for you, Robert! The clean up and demo is hard on motivation - we wanted to get to the fix-up, but couldn't before we were done with the tear-down. Bringing our old wreck of a house back to life was the ultimate reward for the sheer drudgery of hauling debris. But at the time, it felt like the drudgery would never end!

Greetings Mr. Roberts! Love this old House! I’m very happy for you though you’ll have many hard days repairing it it’s worth it! If I’d be younger again I’d love have found one as this ones! The one my son is living in with his family isn’t as old as yours but, his 110 yr. old home is beautiful! I’m loving his home and can’t wait to see yours completely ready to live in! I’m wishing to remind you to bring this old rusted Iron pot be brought to your home! Someone may decide they’d like to take it since the house seem broken down and some ppl have no morals of taking other peoples’ property. This pot can be sandblasted to look as new! Take it with you please! It’s a, camp fire 🔥 looking caldron. Love these cauldrons! Please save it for when your home is ready for moving in you may want to try it while outdoors or even indoors! Never leave it alone alone the road as it is now! Just to remind you of the possibility in this modern days of Ppl being uncaring and hold no morals! Sadly, it’s true. I’d lived during the time a, handshake was trustworthy! Not too many ppl do not seem to be honorably these days! Stay warm for tonight it’s going to be very very cold! Here in Augusta, we’re freezing as well! 29-30-31 degrees isn’t a, tempt we’re used to here prior to Christmas! Jan-Mar yes! Not as last week and this week! Tonight is expected to be 29! Not pleasant! Hate to use my central heater! Too hot for me yet, believe I’m understanding why married ppl when aging one is always cold the other is hotter! I’m the one being too hot! There are times I, leave my window open of I’ll buy a, small unit to use for cold air! Stay warm, God Bless and stay safe!

Winter solstice is Monday but we in Ky. have had cold for several weeks already. The cold has been dipping way down to get to you. You look wrapped up good for the weather . The architecture on the Old Byrd house is very interesting...I do like the front door. The little antique cauldron or bean pot is probably near the same age as the house...could have sat on an outside fire cooking beans while the lady of the house did her washing day...it would have had a lid and bale. Lots of folks are going back to using cast iron it lasts forever, and can be quite valuable in many respects.

@Janice Terrell - I've seen ones that did turn both ways and didn't turn both ways. Some turned clockwise and some turned counterclockwise. Sometimes you got it right the first try and wanted to turn it the other way too just to see if it worked both ways but that would be rude so you were left wondering, unless you had another opportunity to visit again and could try it the other way the first try then it wouldn't be rude. It would just be an honest mistake. ; - )

Problem with boards is most of what you have were milled from full size when a 2 x 4 was a 2 x 4, T &G is still available but not sure where you will find beadboard.

I'm watching this video , and thinking about how I'd love to do a painting of this in the future. Its absolutely gorgeous! So thankful that you either own this house/farm now, or are simply helping to save it. Do you have a web site about this farm? It would be a great place to post photos of it. The house definitely has late Victorian architecture features. The gingerbread is so wonderful! I cant wait to see the inside!

I sure hope you don’t get discouraged. This will be a tremendous amount of
work. It’s a home that deserves to be given new life and I bet you are the right
person to help it. Looking forward to your next video. Thank you!

I was wondering why you bounce around, just as a curiosity. Good idea to do it so you don't get overwhelmed and tired of the project! Good work! Happy holidays!

It is cold in Georgia. It was in the lower 20's in Ellijay this morning. I have so much respect for you and what you have taken on. I can't wait to see how much of the beautiful architectural pieces you can save or have reproduced.

Robert, check and see if there's a millworks in your area. I'm thrilled that you saved as much as you did of the decorative elements, but there will be some missing. Millworks can make the knives to make those elements, especially since you have the originals. Might be a bit expensive, but so worth it. They might even give you the knives for the pattern; I know that one I follow had the knives donated after he was done...for future projects if he needed them. Check with the historical society for the recipe for the mortar for those bricks. They have resources or can find the exact recipe because you'll eventually have to re-point some of it.

nice woodworking, stack your boards straight, will warp and ruin them. Mechanism on porch with wheel may have come from drain valve from old dam.

"far too southern for this type of weather" LOL love it! I'm in MI and sure don't like the cold so maybe I used to be a southerner at some point. lol

I too found that very funny. I don't mind the cold & snow. The dark skies every day is my problem. Stay warm Robert. We up north have 4 more months at least of "cold weather". Great tour. Love your Stormy Krommer hat. That will keep your head warm for sure.🔦🔨🔎🚙

I'm in Michigan also. Loved the snow yesterday. Took granddaughter out in it. Just wish it didn't have to be so cold. But I still love our winters.

I’m in central Florida and the high today was only in the 60’s, I almost died as I don’t even own a coat! My son literally owns no long pants except his school uniform pants. Thankfully it’s warming back up to 70’s later in the week!

That door is really beautiful. In the old days they took such care in making beautiful carvings and details. Must have been fun beeing an carpenter at that time. The door looks like it was brown originally.

I haven't seen one of those old door bells since the 60s. I haven't run into anyone who has seen them or even heard about them. I miss them cause I actually like them. They can be heard throughout the house but I guess that's because we didn't have all the noise making appliances we do today. But I still think you would be able to hear them over most things unless you had ear buds in your ears.

Love the Architecture on the front porch. Surely there is someone in your area that can use the existing as a patern, to put it back to its original glory.
