Just bought one. Great quality. The size is so small- it's practically a pocket radio. The tuning and selectivity is superb. You really can pull in anything.
Wish they had the option to have the backlight on constantly. I like to sit in dim lighting. So would be nice to be able to see the screen. Too bad they didn't upgrade that to the skywave 2
With the CC POCKET costing upward to $70, I'll take this Skywave, with CC buds, and so much more, for the inconvenience of a bit larger. Thanks for the review, Todderbert.😊
Another "Most Excellent Review". Thanks Mr Bert! CCrane produce great quality radios!! I have the Pocket for work and i listen to a lot of sport and FM music on the EP Pro at home..i think they have great style.
I have the original Skywave SSB. I also have a TecsunH501 and Tecsun P330. The Skywave with its simple 2 AA battery power is the radio of choice. Worth mentinging I've dropped it a few times from table height(tripping over Antennae wire) and it keeps on working. Great radio.
The Seventy hour run time is great, I don't know how many times I have left it on with the volume down on my radio bench to come back the next day with it still going strong.
I Finally bought the pocket radio a couple weeks ago when you made the video on it I liked it so well I bought this one and I've been playing with it for a day. I really like it as well. Thank you so much for these videos.
@@todderbert I bought the 909 back in the day when it came out in the mid 90s I think from them as well used to listen to Art Bell that's what turned me onto their shop
@@todderbert it is a nice radio. I still have it don't bring it out as much as I should shortwave listening with the long wire was pretty good from what I remember it's been a while since I've had it plugged in
Nice review. I was curious to see what the earbud experience would be like. Glad to see that it doesn't hiss or pop. I'd love to see you compare it to the Skywave SSB 2 with the latest software version.
Hej Todderbert thanks for the review the C.Crane Skyway 2 seams to be a nice radio and love that it has nice audio with headphones take care and have a nice monday.
A few years ago I bought a c-crane radio not the c-crane 2 radio in wisconsin that is where I spend my summer vacation there I'm originally from nebraska the frequency on my c-crane radio stays on for a few seconds and then it shows the current time
Worse I think you have it backwards. They had the Mini went to the horrible Micro USB. Should have gone with the USB C as you say or stay with the Mini.
How does this compare to say a Yeasu 891 on shortwave reception? I understand the Yeasu is more expensive but is the difference substantial or not so much.
I was ready to buy till I saw the Micro USB. That to me is a serious flaw, virtually every device I have had eventually had problems with that. Why not USB C? Or like Garmin stay with the Mini USB both far better connections.
2 things: While you scanned the FM band in Chicago, the radio skipped 94.7 WLS. Why did the scan miss a strong station? And, the air-band demo didn’t pick up SQUAT! You mention how well the squelch works - Uh, yeah, it works remarkably well when the radio isn’t very sensitive in the Aviation Band. I think I’ll pass on that radio…
WLS is directional sensitive while in my sub floor basement, the wire couldn't pick it up, happens with other radios. AIR band works great, during the day, this was filmed at night when Air activity is Low. I'll try to feature the AIR band during the day, but the Skywave 2 should have at least a 10ch scanning capability like its bigger brother the SSB 2.
No doubt this is a quality radio, CC Crane always has good quality. However, for the price I am disappointed that they don't include batteries or a wall charger/ac adapter. Just saying.
Hey Todd. I'm just wanted to let you know that tonight (Thursday Night) at 11pm central 12 midnight (my time Friday morning) after the game WGN Radio 720 AM, I'll be on the Rollye James Show talking about 2 NBC affiliates in my state that are turning 70 years young this year. So if you decide on wanting to catch and record me on one of your radios, here's your chance.
Pretty disappointing sound for such a high end device. C. Crane needs to up their speaker game a bit. As it is, im still way more fond of Sangean. The only C. Crane i bought has a built in constant hiss, so it went back. Since i started getting into this hobby I have bought 5 radios. 1 C. Crane, 1 Sony, and 3 Sangean. Both the crane and sony were defective in some way. Makes me not want to buy anything else but sangean.
@@todderbert I bought the skywave 2 but not from Amazon. Thanks so much for steering me in the right direction. The Eton definitely would have been redundant with my Sangean ATS909x2. This C Crane is exactly right. Thanks so much.

Nice review. American radios need to be made in the USA. My own opinion.
Period. They have to
Made in China.
Murica
And many other products
Dont vote for libtartds! Make Murica great again to bring back the manufacturing.

I wish they would've done USB-C instead of micro :(
Dealbreaker. I'm surprised they didn't go to USB-C in a brand new radio. I guess they don't expect to sell them in the EU?
Definitely would have been convenient

Great littler radio, thanks for the review Todd!
Hej Todderbert thanks for the review the C.Crane Skyway 2 seams to be a nice radio and love that it has nice audio with headphones take care and have a nice monday.
Yes I will get one. Thanks.
Hey there Todderbert, mine showed up in the mail yesterday and I haven’t put it down since! Better than Nintendo.🤠👍
Better than Nintendo ! that is saying something. I've been stuck playing Stardew Valley on the Switch for Hours on End :)
The Eton would have been completely redundant with my Sangean ats-909x2. I got this CC skywave ssb2 today and I know I am going to love it.
So thanks again for the great advice.
A few years ago I bought a c-crane radio not the c-crane 2 radio in wisconsin that is where I spend my summer vacation there I'm originally from nebraska the frequency on my c-crane radio stays on for a few seconds and then it shows the current time
Should be able to change that so Frequency always shows.
It’s easy to change that. If it’s the same as the original Skywave, with the radio OFF, press and hold “4” until the display says “F”
Please, How do you set the alarm , using a rádio station? Thanks!
USB mini is an upgrade??? Ridiculous. Could easily have gone to USB-C
Worse I think you have it backwards. They had the Mini went to the horrible Micro USB. Should have gone with the USB C as you say or stay with the Mini.
I have an original Skywave -keep tuned to UNICOM 123.000 for the local airport. SW is decent also.
CC makes some good radios - imho
I was wondering, does this have the high minimum volume on headphones like the CC Pocket? Thanks for your reply! Merry Christmas!
Mine does not, it gets nice and low, barely audible with zero hiss. Merry Christmas
I ordered one of these radios
Happy New Year. A question. Can the frequencies 26100-29999 be manually keyed in or there is a hardware limitation.
Hardware limited.
How does this compare to say a Yeasu 891 on shortwave reception? I understand the Yeasu is more expensive but is the difference substantial or not so much.
Does it say where it was made?
Ordered.
Great video! Would you mind sharing what 12' antenna wire you said was hooked up to your window?
It was bundled with the Tecsun PL-380. A good wire is the Sangean ANT-60, or Kaito T-1.
Thanks for the info!@@todderbert

I have the CC Pocket but out of all of these sky wave models which one is King?
Thanks for the great and informative videos!!💯💯
Skywave SSB 2.
@@todderbert thank you!!!
You neglected to show the kickstand on the back of the radio so one would not worry about it tipping over.
Whoops, yes the kickstand on this one is great. Not like the wimpy one on the DX-286.
Are any radios made in the USA anymore?
possibly some independent crystal sets. There are a few others, but they are kit radios.
Thanks!!
Only thing I wish crane would add to these little radios is Bluetooth, it’d make it the complete package
What is the Air band like . can you hear planes.?
Yes, but it doesn't have a scanner mode. The SSB 2 has a 10CH scanner built in, which is helpful.
Thanks
