Originally designed in the late 1950s, the Fairchild 670 only saw production of less than 1,000 total units, yet its meticulously engineered, organic-sounding compression can be heard on endless recordings, especially on those from the ’50s through the ’70s. Its limited manufacturing and unrivaled sonic character have made the 670 one of the most sought-after pieces of studio gear, and after decades of desire, Fairchild has returned to bless our digitally dependent world with a refreshing tube-power redux. Telefunken founder and CEO, Toni Fishman, joins Mitch Gallagher for a deep dive into the history of the iconic compressor, the stakes of its return, and the future of the lauded Fairchild sound. Check it out!

Awesome. This video is exactly what i needed to push me over the edge to get one for my home studio. Only $35,000. Very cool.

I used to own a 660 AND a 670. I used the 670 all the time and carried it with me to the various studios where I used to work. Fairchild is fantastic on vocals and drums. I wish that I hadn't of sold them. They were actually very quiet as well.

With companies like Audioscape and Stam, I don’t find a reason that anyone would spend 35K on this.

Why would i buy this for $35,000 when i could pay someone $500 to tell me that my mix sounds reeaaallly really good for the next 70 songs?

What's the point of recreating this to be faithful to the original with hard to find components again?
20 years if a part goes bad, then where am I getting the original replacement?

This sounds like more of a passion project than a smart business move. If they sell 100 of these it might make some sense…. Some people like me that own higher end commercial, studios may want the Fairchild name sitting in their rack. But finding clients that would appreciate it and it’s value may be hard to find.

Sounds absolutely amazing!!!! Sounds expensive too, haha!!! I have heard so much about the original FairChild, but I never had the chance to be around the original, but if it was this great of sound quality as this one is, I want one!!!

"hate to say BetterMaker" ... not sure if that was a semantic slip, but kudos to the revived Fairchild product line. I should add that my awesome Sweetwater rep recommended a suite of BM mastering gear that is proving to be nothing short of outstanding. Will be keeping an eye on the Fairchild reproductions.

35k. No thanks. It's a great unit. But 35k is nowhere near it's value for production, imo.

Most practical info in this whole video is that Waves makes a plugin version.

@@tekis0 I watched an Eric Valentine video where he tested the UAD version I think. It's his slash episode. The UAD was lacking in bass and a few other things, but it was ok.

I personally like the IK Multimedia version to be honest. It can be very musical and reacts fairly realistically without even engaging anything or making any changes. They worked in it diligently to capture the subtleties of the unit they modeled. Having worked in a studio with the real deal, that plugin is close enough for me if I want that sound instead of using my analogue 1176/LA2A etc. Just my favorite plugin of it personally. 🤷‍♂️😊

Compared to a vintage unit, you're not wrong... I saw one for sale for $44,000 9 years ago. So IF you can find one for sale, count on it being 10% more (or higher) than a brand new one.

If you're already spending 5 digits you might as well get an OG, a reproduction model should be using the same or similar circuit with modern production components, it won't sound 1-1 but charge like 1500-2000 for it and no one will care

Any chance we could see/hear the bypassed signal, so we can hear the actual difference? I wasn’t sure if all the tracks were going through the 670 constantly or if there was some bypassing.
