My high school choir won a national contest singing this song 18 years ago! I have been looking for it for the past 6. It's so nice to be able to hear it. We sang it much faster, though. This version is beautiful. As was ours. :)

my school did this at the heritage festival in new york (I wasn't there/didn't go on the trip) and *also* won the sweepstakes. we listened to the recording of it, it pretty much rocked. I'd really like to see another version on here!! (can't wait to sing this tonightttt)

The melody appeared first in 1578, in the book of Georgio Manerio, with the title of "Ungaresca". It was an instrumental piece, we don't know if it was originally really a folk song. This choral piece we hear on the video is from Lajos Bárdos Hungarian composer, from 1949 if I am right, and the text was also written to it that time.

It was composed by a Hungarian composer Lajos Bárdos who processed an old dance song.

Near the end, the sopranos might have backed off a little on their held "Joy"; the altos got rather hard to hear. But I love this song, it's so beautiful. My choir is singing this for our next concert and I really love it. =)

@mbibby10 In my choir, it's like this: the basses, which I am also in, are amazing along with a lot of the girls, and the tenors literally have three people, one who can actually sing moderately good.

@Slink12345 No, actually, most of the guys in my choir can't sing, or aren't singing correctly. Girls always sing lovely, tenors tend to sound better simply because they sing in a more audible range. All of the sections in this choir are very lovely, however. Although, -10 points for using sheet music. It's a lot harder to do without.

My (former) school did this at the Anaheim Heritage Festival 2006. Unfortunately, the basses at my old school were rather bad at holding up a pitch, and the sopranos would take off like a train in the first 15 seconds, so it was kind of a miss.
