Thanks for the video, it's refreshing to see a complete walk thru by a regular Joe instead of some snarky hipster doing it in two minutes and skipping half the steps. Hope you recovered from your surgery. Best wishes.
Thanks for your video. I was able to install the kit in 15 minutes, but only after spending one hour trying to figure out that 'nutset'. Between your video and the comment from Marrs1721, it finally clicked in my brain. Hold the Allen wrench with a big pair of pliers, don't turn the screw - turn the bolt, voila!
Appreciate the time taken to make this video. I was about to throw the entire kit against the wall because of that set nut thing. The video and constructive comments saved the day.
Very helpful video. I just installed this on my 2012 Ram Laramie Longhorn and after reading the instructions and watching this video twice, I was able to install the tailgate assist in 20 minutes! The only agonizing part is the nutsert, but marking it before you start turning makes it a lot less nerve wrenching.
After going stark raving mad over the nut I finally figured out that angle pressure while you get it started to make sure the inter nut is not turning is essential. Then once it gets started you can slowly back off on the angle pressure
Before I install mine on silverado, I watched your video to see the overall sequence and it helped me a lot. Thanks for uploading. However, as i have seen in the review section of the amzon and other places, the manufacture need to be a little bit more clearer on the step where we need to tighten the nutsert by rotating 9 turns. And your video also was edited in such way that it does not show the actual sequence. When you are at the step where you are installing nutsert, you have to hold the allen screw with wrench and rotate the nut counterclockwise 9 turns. Those of you, like me, are weak at mechanical things might want to know.
Rotating the nut CCW only loosens the whole washer setup and doesn't do anything to put the insert in. ??? If u hold the Allen key screw and righted the nut CW it causes the screw to be removed from the threads at the end of the insert and doesn't do any bit of expanding. Can u explain better what u did to get it to expand.
Andrew Hopkins It is a frustrating piece of what should be a simple install, isn't it? You can tell by the number of comments on this vid that you and I are not the only ones! If I recall correctly, the threads are opposite of what you'd expect, so to get the insert to expand you have to turn the screw the opposite direction. There are some excellent detailed descriptions by other viewers so read through some of the older comments for additional info.
I held the wrench stationary and only turned the allen key. The wrench helped me to put angular tension on the nutsert to get it to stay put. Once it started expanding (see my video at 3:58) I was able to stop using the wrench all together and only turned using the allen key. I turned clockwise ("righty-tighty").. Good luck!
Your video helped me a lot. I was struggling with the first part for about 10 minutes as well and then I found your video and I was able to figure it out. Thanks for the help!
lol, thanks Anthony! I was happy to use it! I hope all my viewers check out your YT page. If you have other songs you'd like to allow me to use, let me know. I've got another half dozen videos in the pipeline and they all need tunes!
@Kelly, I think I did look at that option when I was installing, but found it created some other problem, but I can't recall what it was. None the less, it's now been one year since I installed the assist and I haven't had any problems at all. Still using it and loving it.
I had mine mounted, then after using it several times found that the insert had loosened and had to go back and retighten it again. I lost count of how many turns I made, but it was waaaay more than 9 turns. Good luck!
Just a fyi, Dee Zee has a new part #43301(replaces 43300) that addresses the tight fit between tailgate and cable issue. Also have been told you can use a thinner washer than the one in the kit and this will also take care of the rubbing. Some people have had paint removed because of this problem. New part is supposed to be out soon .
@Larry I had the same problem. DeeZee says CCW and several other viewers have commented the same. I had to put some angular tension on the allen bolt/installer gadget to get the nutsert to "bite" on the inside of the hole. Also, while I did turn CCW, if you watch closely (~3:55) the last bit of tightening I did, u'll see my wrench turning clockwise and the thing tightening...go figure. I recommend u call their cust srvc number, they have been responsive to other viewers. Good luck!
@Tibbylancer, it is holding up just great! I wondered the same thing myself before I bought it, but haven't had any problems. Thanks for watching and for posting your question! Cheers!
When installing the nutzert...the allen wrench is used to hold the allen head bolt still. During this process it should not move. Mark the nut and turn it clockwise with the wrench. Very quickly the nutzert begins to crush firmly locking itself to the tailgate.
@RangerChrisFinn, DeeZee says to turn the nutsert counterclockwise (see thread from Vibe268 below). I had to finess it by putting angular tension on the nutsert to keep it from spinning in the hole as well. Good luck!
I've tried turning CCW CW and turning just the Allen screw. Nothing makes the stupid insert expand. What do u suggest? Are u turning the nut CCW or CW or the Allen screw CCW or CW? The screw
@Kris Marrs, Thank you for the comment and clarification. That darn nutsert appears to be the bane of most people's experiences with the DeeZee. Glad I'm not alone in my frustrations! Cheers!
Have you considered removing the washer on the top cable clip to see if that would give you more clearance for the cable binding issues? Thanks for the detailed video I will use it as a guide.
@Vibe286. I know how you feel...it was definitely a challenge for me, too. Since the nutsert itself works like a drywall anchor, the trick seems to be getting it to stay put. If it rotates as you screw the allen bolt, the nutsert won't expand. I just kept fiddeling with the tension on the nutsert until I felt it start to grab. Once the it starts expanding you will feel the difference right away. Not sure if that makes any sense at all, but good luck! Let us know if and how u get it working!
Great video! I think you are supposed to set the cable clip at 3 1/2 inches.. That's why mine says.. My truck is a 2011 ram 1500.. And my instruction sheet looks just like yours.. It might help with your cables rubbing together.... Just my opinion
Installing the nutsert on an 07 Ram I had the same problems as others.. I found that the nutsert itself must not turn. You hold the Allen wrench steady and turn the 10mm wrench CW. FIRST HOWEVER-- Remove the nutsert from the nutsert tool. Check and see if the cut grooves in the nutsert are deep enough to allow easy separation and compression when you turn the wrench. Just like a wall anchor. If not use a Dremel tool and cut them a bit deeper. If you do not have a Dremel use a very small hobby type flat blade screw driver and punch through the deepest part of the cuts. You may need a small hammer. Just a bit now- don't over do it, take your time. Assemble the nutsert and tool and set to the 3/4" inch. You will have to press down (or sideways) on the allen wrench so the nutsert itself is held steady by the wall of the hole in the tailgate as you turn the nut. After a few turns you will feel the diference and as you turn it will straighten out in the hole. Tighten to recommended setting, do not overtighten.
Suggestion for you. Try putting the old painted washer back on instead of using the provided one. I think the one they gave you is a little thicker and that is why it is sticking on the cable when you open it. The original painted washer was not as thick. Great video by the way. Let me know if that helped.
I believe Dee Zee has corrected the problem with your cables. I think the new part number now is #43301. It now includes a bracket that hangs down a tad to mount the gas strut at the top and keep the cables from touching they way yours does. The gas strut might also be a little shorter...That is if you still have the truck..
@ClipDog You are most welcome! I'm glad the video was helpful. I'm wondering if it's an issue for the 2500 vs the 1500? Perhaps some other owners of RAM 2500s will chime in with their experiences. Thank you for your comment and for watching.
Stabilus it's a lot better. I have it on my truck for at least 2 years and zero issues, when I was did with the same deezee like yours I put in trash can after 2 days. I never deal with deezee brand crap anymore. Good video btw.
The piano music was too loud at the end to hear what he was saying. Also he didn't really offer a solution to the two cable ends rubbing after the hydraulic cylinder was installed.
Ok, I'm at the part where I'm supposed to use the nutsert and have to admit it's been more than 10 mins and I still haven't figured it out. I can't tell from your video what you did or how to properly get the insert tight. Any suggestions?
I believeI got it from Auto Anything; It is called a truck bed extender, and they range in price from two to three hundred bucks. Very light weight. The installation is fairly straightforward, although some skill with drilling metal is helpful. Thanks for watching and for your question! Cheers!
Hey everyone, it’s fascinating to me that 12 years has gone by since I installed the DeeZee dampers on my Big Blue Baby. Sadly, earlier this year I had to send BBB off to a new home. She’s now helping haul around the gear for a musician and manager for a famous venue on the Strip in Las Vegas! He says she is doing very well and enjoying living the life of a full time music nerd. Plus, the occasional weekend dad or grandpa duties for hauling groceries or going camping. Gone but far from forgotten! I will introduce you all to the Gray Ghost, my brand new second hand (new to me, anyways) 2020 Laramie 4X4 1500. I’ll catechism you up on alll the essential mods. Thanks for watching!
there is a tool that is called a torx but it looks like a star and from what i can tell that is an Allen key which has a total of six sides called a hexagon which looka nothing like a star
Thanks for posting this vid, I just installed this on my '05 Ram 2500, and I can say if I didn't watch this vid, I would of drove myself crazy with that damn nutsert!!! Also, I had to dimple in the inside side of my tailgate a bit to clear the cylinder from rubbing everytime I closed the gate, seems like the big washer they gave me was a bit too thick, I hated doing it, but I was at the point of screw it, Im not turning back!! Did anybody else have this prob with a Ram??
I'm confused and this nutsert thing is p*ssin' me off!!! Do I turn the allen bolt clockwise or ccw? I can't figure out what the answer is here in these messages. I have been fooling with this thing for 45 min and right now the nutsert is in and expanded enough that it won't come out, but it is NOT tight. Any help is much appreciated!
It is hard to figure out, isn't it! Think of it like a drywall anchor, if you've ever used one of those. As you tighten the bolt, it collapses the back end towards the front end, thus expanding the middle part. Assuming you are holding the locking nut securely, try turning the bolt in the direction opposite of what you've been doing. I bet that will do the trick. You just have to be careful not to over tighten it and strip out the threads.
That's thread locker (essentially a glue). It creates a bond between the nut threads and the bolt threads so that the nut does not rattle itself loose under normal vibration. But it's easy to break loose with a wrench if you need to. Common brand name if you need to buy off the shelf is Lock-Tite. They come in different colors to represent different strengths of the glue.
@justaguyX7fNJ Yea you Ford guys have it so easy on the tailgate upgrade! I'm glad it was a success for you. Thank you for watching and for your comment. Keep on Truckin'!
I just installed this on my Ford F-150 and it didn't say anything about removing the cable restrictor piece. The shock keeps popping off though. Did your shock pop off before you removed the restrictor?
Joseph Foster No, I haven't had the shock to pop off at all. I have noticed that the parts and instructions are different for makes. I know it's different for Fords than Dodges, and imagine that would be true for Toyotas and Chevys as well.
Correct, I did that because that's what the instructions say to do. I believe that you leave the washer out because the DeeZee attachment part takes up the space formerly occupied by that washer. My guess is if you leave it in things won't work properly.
if you don't remover the limiter the lollipop end on the cable will not be able to rotate out of the way and the shock will hit it not allowing it to close properly
Man, mine was too hard to remove with the torque tool they provided. I could not get it to budge. Gave up for now. Might have get the dealer to loosen it for me, or buy a torque set?? Shit...I tried could budge it!! Ahhh
Hey Brian, in my garage, I would use gentle and alternating pressure - being careful not not scratch paint. But u need a variety of large screwdrivers, pry bats, and blocks of wood, plus an extra pair of hands. What happened t it? How did it get bent or warped?
I checked with the manufacturer, and they don't make one specifically fitted for the '99 model. The first year they made one for Dodge was 2002. If you can compare a 2002 model to yours, or check with your local Dodge dealers parts department, you might get lucky. Alternately, Amazon carries at least one other lift assist by Hopkins. I am not familiar with that company or product at all, so the best I can do is point you in their direction. Thanks for watching, and have a great week!
Awesome video, but I have my cell phone volume on full and could hardly hear you talking. I checked my other phones same thing... Had to watch the video on my TV to hear it. Other than that, awesome job, wasn't repeatative or long winded like some other "how to" videos.
The instructions they give you are misleading. Hold the Allen wrench in the screw and then tighten the NUT clockwise until the bolt inside expands enough and you feel it tighten. Loosen the nut counterclockwise a turn or two then take out the screw. Look inside to see your progress. If you can insert and tighten the little ball head screw then you did it right.
seriously? counter-clockwise? I messed with that rotation for ten mins thinking that was the way it worked and only got it going when I reversed that! lol Oh well, whatever works! Let me know when you sort it out.
@TAMU411 Excellent! I keep hearing from Ford guys that the install process is MUCH easier than on the Dodge. When you finish, let us know how yours goes. Better yet, video it and post it as s video reply to mine! Good luck and have fun! SkiDoc21
You’re not supposed to screw that in you supposed to hold one and use the ranch to tighten OK don’t make a mistake only with the range Allen key inside don’t turn using your wrench key
18.38 minutes of my life I can't get back. After watching your tube I'm more confused partly due to your naming parts wrong and using the wrong tools for removal and install.
Hey Kevin, I apologize for the poor audio, but it isn't my gear that was the problem, it was my voice. I was still suffering the effects of radiation treatment for head and neck cancer. Radiation is really bad for the human body. I still have some "froggy" days, but have some days where I sound much more normal. Thanks for watching! Make it a great week!
fiestasport Hey, thanks for sticking up for me. Mack McCurry To be honest, the problem with this video isn't so much the mic on my camera as it was the fact that I was only about 18 months into recovery from extensive radiation treatments for head and neck cancer. My voice was negatively impacted and sounded pretty gravelly. I do plan on buying some new equipment this year, and my voice has healed significantly in the past 6 months, so, hopefully, I will sound clear as a bell on future videos. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
Anant Lakeram, I checked the DeeZee website and they don't carry one for Toyotas. Another manufacturer does, Stabilius, you can find them here: www.liftsupportsdepot.com/ezdown/toyota/
Why have this. The new tale gates are not heavy! I open and close mine with one hand. Im in my 50's. This would have been nice on the older trucks from the 70's. Now they were heavy!

very descriptive and perfect commentating.

On the nutcert tool you hold the allen screw and turn the nut in to pull the nutcert tight .

Thanks! I appreciate the props.
+Bassett Hound123 Also the CarID video is no longer available..
Thanks for that info!
+SkiDoc21 Were you able to correct your assist mounting??
Nice video, clear. My the star wrench I got was useless too n instructions were not as clear.
@ClipDog You are most welcome! I'm glad the video was helpful. I'm wondering if it's an issue for the 2500 vs the 1500? Perhaps some other owners of RAM 2500s will chime in with their experiences. Thank you for your comment and for watching.

You are skipped the part I'm having troubles with... how to instal and tighten the nutsert. D'oh!

Hey man, great video. Thanks for sharing and helping out the You Tube community.
Please keep up the great work............ Thank you.

Thanks Foghorn!
SkiDoc21 Welcome Doc.
very well done...thanks a lot!
It is hard to figure out, isn't it! Think of it like a drywall anchor, if you've ever used one of those. In my last comment I am referring to the part you install in the hole on your tailgate. Not by your break light.
What is the little bottle with blue fluid in it. The instructions do not show it or mention what the fluid is for? Thanks.

Where did u get the cage for the rear of you're truck
Im getting one.
I just put one on my 2005 ram and I couldn't close the tail gate it kept hitting the shock. so I left the washer off and I left the strap off too
Did you notice you left the washer off when you removed the limiter?
Correct, I did that because that's what the instructions say to do. I believe that you leave the washer out because the DeeZee attachment part takes up the space formerly occupied by that washer. My guess is if you leave it in things won't work properly.
if you don't remover the limiter the lollipop end on the cable will not be able to rotate out of the way and the shock will hit it not allowing it to close properly
Excellent!
Where did you get that lip cover for the tailgate?
Hey @richiecunningham01, I got mine at www.partstrain.com. Lots of styles to choose from at good prices.
Man, mine was too hard to remove with the torque tool they provided. I could not get it to budge. Gave up for now. Might have get the dealer to loosen it for me, or buy a torque set?? Shit...I tried could budge it!! Ahhh
I thought this was gonna be stupid.. lol pretty neat. thanks for showing :)
EXCELLENT!!!
Thanks good video.
how do i open the tailgate on a 2006 tundra that is stuck
Hey Brian, in my garage, I would use gentle and alternating pressure - being careful not not scratch paint. But u need a variety of large screwdrivers, pry bats, and blocks of wood, plus an extra pair of hands. What happened t it? How did it get bent or warped?
Is there one available for 1999 dodge ram if so can I have the link?
I checked with the manufacturer, and they don't make one specifically fitted for the '99 model. The first year they made one for Dodge was 2002. If you can compare a 2002 model to yours, or check with your local Dodge dealers parts department, you might get lucky. Alternately, Amazon carries at least one other lift assist by Hopkins. I am not familiar with that company or product at all, so the best I can do is point you in their direction. Thanks for watching, and have a great week!
Thanks for the quick response.
Awesome video, but I have my cell phone volume on full and could hardly hear you talking.
I checked my other phones same thing...
Had to watch the video on my TV to hear it.
Other than that, awesome job, wasn't repeatative or long winded like some other "how to" videos.
@Tony, thanks for the comment. I plan on upgrading my equipment soon, so future videos should be much easier to hear. Thanks for watching!
Volume turned all the way up and i can still barely hear.
Remove the washer so it won't touch it anymore
Kind of a let down Dee Zee !Was under impression this would be a 2 way tail gate assist and not just down.Oh well...NEXT!
thats not a torke wrench
Logan Dimick That's not how you spell torque. Douche
18.38 minutes of my life I can't get back. After watching your tube I'm more confused partly due to your naming parts wrong and using the wrong tools for removal and install.
learn your tools its an allan key not a torque rench
Logan Dimick it is a torx wrench. learn your tools
Audio.
Make it a great week!
idc ite not a torque rench
like i said there is not arguing with stupid people
Buy some REAL TOOL'S and a mic for your camera.
Then make you own videos instead of bitching
fiestasport Hey, thanks for sticking up for me.
Cheers!
I was NOT bitching . And I do video's I just don't put them on U-tube it's just family . I, m sorry if you thought I was bitching .
Mack shut up you baby back bitch. Buy him some new tools and a microphone if it’s such an issue
can it work on a Toyota Tacoma ??
Anant Lakeram, I checked the DeeZee website and they don't carry one for Toyotas. Another manufacturer does, Stabilius, you can find them here: www.liftsupportsdepot.com/ezdown/toyota/
Why have this. The new tale gates are not heavy! I open and close mine with one hand. Im in my 50's. This would have been nice on the older trucks from the 70's. Now they were heavy!
