They typically cost more, because everything's on the ground floor, and that requires more land for the same number of rooms. Then there's the luxury of having no adjoining neighbours.
I have not seen any newbuild ones made just for old people for years and years i will say though near me they built something like 70 apartments for older folk they have communal living rooms etc also if they want to gather, there is also a cafe on site for them too which is good i suppose
Just fascinating on so many levels. £19/week! And the pensioner bungalows in Essex--how does the line flow from that to the current reputation for people FROM Essex? What is the relation between the London pensioners and the suburban elite portrayed in the media? And how is the Government handling similar schemes today? Interesting...so different from the US.
@@MargaretPinard to touch on some of your questions from a native. There is no such £19 rent tenancies any more due to inflation, it is incredibly long and ardous to get on a council tenancy and now tend to be assured tenancies with a housing association. Many people from Essex are either from London or parents/grandparents are from London. The London elite eg: Mayfair etc, often defect to their second homes, country homes, cotswolds. East enders, South London- historically the working class- created pocket populations in seaside places, especially Kent and Essex, or if abroad- Spain, Marbella. There are schemes to buy their council homes at a discount now, but they have to have been signed onto their tenancy before April 2005 (I believe) to qualify and/or get a discount. Alternatively aka if not, with some housing associations who provide assured tenancies, people can buy a partial part of the property. A theory the coin as 'stepping up. A housing association that provides this in the UK is origin housing. You can google and check that out if needed.
:( i thought that when he aske them both what they would do or say if he told them there that they could move into one...that he was actually going to say they had one for them :( found it very say, but i was happy to see the people who got one and them all dancing etc i wonder if this couple managed to get one
I know. I still think it’s one of the most shocking policies ever implemented. I was only a kid at the time so only understood it when I was studying housing as part of a uni course and my jaw dropped and I don’t think I’ve ever closed it since. Just a devastatingly harmful piece of legislation placing so many families and individuals into terrible living situations - and some into homelessness due to the resulting shortage of social housing.
@@moominmay totally agreed. A few years ago my dad passed away and when going through his documents I found a rental agreement for a two bedroomed House that we lived in in the early eighties. The cost of the equivalent rent for that house today when takking into account inflation is £300 per month. The local housing association pays landlords of these same houses £780 per month as of 2019.
Nor would those in the 1940s have recognised their country back in the 1980s, or the Edwardians in the 1940s or the 1860s Victorians in the 1900s. I think the people in the video would be fairly happy their country hasn't had to go through another blitz, and that there's no longer the threat of a nuclear war with Russia.
After looking on ancestry.com there was a dick felstead who passed away in Essex in 1995 so hopefully it’s the same one and they got their bungalow.
Hope they got their dream bungalow !!
I wonder if they ever got one, hope they did
Very few bungalows seem to be getting built nowadays, whether it's rented or private!

imagine a world where homes are affordable, and you can earn enough to buy a house wherever and whenever you decide

Good ol’ Reg with 2 women on his arms !!!
What a great idea it was to sell all the housing off and then rent it back from private landlords at £800+ a month.
