Waitress: The Musical brings the Tony-nominated Broadway phenomenon to the big screen. Featuring composer-lyricist Sara Bareilles as Jenna Hunterson, a waitress and expert pie maker stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. When a baking contest in a nearby county offers her a chance at escape, Jenna fights to reclaim a long-forgotten part of herself. I choked up when I saw the casting for Dawn. Pretty much the other characters had little to no resemblance but the casting and design made me think of her a lot.

I'm from Belgium, so it's not like I can go to the USA for a quick musical (even tho I love them, well, the songs at least). I would love to see as many Broadway musicals as possible (full versions, not just those youtube video's of people who filmed it).

i just got back from the cinema after watching this and it was SO good. it honestly made me feel so many emotions. everyone's talent and abilities were outstanding but sara's vocals and delivery really stood out to me. i'm so upset that i didn't get to see it earlier though
We need it worldwide! I’m a huge huge fan who flew from Brasil to NYC just to be able to see it on Broadway! I need to watch it a million times again, pleaaaase!

@@cesnav7593 I just meant that they’ve labeled it as a movie. I realize is a recording of the Broadway show. When I said “version” I meant a version I can see in a movie theater. And that it’s a pro shot, as opposed to just one camera in front of a stage.

@@shelld1261 Maybe because it looks like yet another portrayal of the blue collar husband as a cross between Archie Bunker and Freddy Kruger (except with much less depth) and a(n equally shallowly fleshed out) all-good protagonist wife who can only find courage to change things via the feels of a secret affair and friends who focus on husband's villainy instead of a protagonist who is moved to, and supported by friends to, improve her situation by looking inside to find assertiveness to ask directly for (ideally marriage improvements, or at least) a clean duplicity-free separation (followed by a period of unattached self-reflection). And maybe he wanted to express his reaction without getting into details that would place him in the cross-hairs.
Maybe. But maybe the trailer portrays a completely inaccurate synopsis.
@@Eclectic8Yep, to me, you have it wrong. I have seen the movie when it first came out and just watched the musical yesterday. I am a domestic violence survivor and left my husband the year before the movie came out. It touched me deeply and it is one of my absolute favorite movies. The movie was perfection to me and everything I needed. This was a very strong woman, in the end who was blessed to have amazing friends to help her. The time with the doctor helped her as well to see things differently, to help her see that she is worthy of love and to have someone to treat her right. There is nothing that could have been done with her husband. She could only dream he was like Archie Bunker! He is physically and mentally abusive to her! You have not seen any of the scary crazy scenes with him . If she stayed and tried to “fix him”, her and her child would either be beaten constantly and miserable or eventually dead. Took two friends to see the musical and they were extremely touched by it too.
I mean though, everyone has a right to their opinions and beliefs. It’s what makes the world go round.

@@shelld1261 Thanks for that synopsis. You confirmed that husband was in the spectrum between "Archie..and Freddy Kruger" (albeit more the latter). Though it would be good to know where, I regret that something I wrote seemed to convey that friends (especially same-sex and, to a more limited extent, opposite) aren't crucial nor that one should (ever) try to "fix" a spouse, much less that anyone should stay around physical abuse.

@@Eclectic8 Nope, he is not Archie Bunker at all. I grew up watching “All in the Family”. Archie Bunker was not an abusive man. He was a man who had very closed minded ideas about people of color, people with different cultures of his own, and could also be quite a bit Mysogynist. However, he did actually love his wife and daughter and would never lay a finger on them. He could also be lovable and he did start to come around a bit as the show progressed.
The husband in Waitress? He uses his wife for money, puts her down mentally so he can control her, and is physically abusive.
I guess I was confused because to me, you made it seem like you thought this was some sappy maybe Hallmark or Lifetime movie. Maybe I read what you wrote wrong? It’s not. It was well written and acted. The Musical is well, a musical, but the subject matter is still not light hearted, IMHO.
This is not done in a saccharine way at all, IMHO.
I could see with the Trailer that they didn’t really cover what it’s actually about well. They really seemed to highlight the more happy parts and used a very mild part to show what the husband is like. Also, I could see how the affair and between her and the doctor could seem cheesy in this clip. However the actual original movie as well as the actual musical are very well done. They do have humor in it, but hey, that’s okay and they do a great job at it. I have seen corny, cheesy, and unbelievable stuff. Trust me, as a survivor, I know. This is not that. Not in my opinion anyway. I am so grateful for the woman who wrote this. She was amazing. It is a true shame she didn’t get to see how well her movie did as well as see that it reached so many, that almost 20 years later, it’s still reaching people in a new way. ❤️
