The Pinar del Rio Province in Cuba, was formerly called "Nueva Filipinas" in the 18th century due to mass immigration of Filipinos and other Asians to the area to work in the region's tobacco industry. Asians immigrated to Cuba through the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade route and they were known generally known as "Chinos Manila".
One of the things that links Cuba to the Philippines is Japanese anime. Sometime in 2015, my wife and I were walking around in Old Havana and we passed by one these smaller Museums and from the street I peered through the main arched entry. Lo and behold! there is a 10-foot-tall Voltes V in full double-faced corrugated cardboard glory! Being a child of the 70s, I tell you that experience got me very, very thrilled!

@@deenewconcepts3856 my family oral history had Filipinos at St Malo at LEAST in the last decade of the 18th Century. The Isleños families I interviewed in St Bernard Parish, where St Malo community was, also have an oral history of Filipinos being in the bayou when they came from the Canary Islands about that time. They remember old family photos of St Malo, and told me the Manilamen and Isleños were able to live peacefully, though separately, because they could communicate in Spanish. Eventually those men intermarried with Isleños, French, Spanish and Native Americans. My first Grandfather, Felipe, was at St Malo with his wife Brigette Nugent (Irish) in 1849, but they moved to a more family friendly village at Bayou Bienvenue shortly after. The men at St Malo are said to have told the British where the Americans were on the Mississippi after their ships found their way into Lake Borgne. However, there is very plausible speculation that some of them joined Lafitte and his pirates in their aide to Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans, as some Isleños from the area did.

Omg my great grandpa was a Pensionado!! I was just talking about him last night!! This is fate. Happiness Reaction just reacted to one of your videos and that is how I'm here cuz I really want to learn more about our history. I was actually looking for info on my mom's grandpas for awhile now. Her dad's father was an American who was sent to the Philippines in 1906 to teach english and basic education to the Filipinos in the provinces. Her mom's father was a Pensionado sent by the U.S. Government in 1903 to study husbandry in Ohio and Indiana. The hairs on my arms stood up when you mentioned the Pensionados. How do I start going about looking for info about them? I also subscribed to your channel even before watching this video. With the other videos I watched. Thank you so much for posting your knowledge about our country!! Btw, you kinda look like John Cho.
Thank you. My dad came from the Philippines 🇵🇭 in the 80s and he doesn’t talk much about the history. My Lolo was a survivor of the Bataan death March and i have so many things i wanted to learn. But he passed away and now i feel like I’m making up for so much I’ve missed learning thank you!

Yup..1830's there was Spanish shipwreck in Northern California...you had a filipinos who worked on the ships intermarry with Miwok and Pomo's and had families. They elected to stay when the repairs were done and ship set sail back to the Phillippines.

Hey Kirby here's some interesting facts and history for you if you never knew this. There was a Mexican governor in the state of Guerrero named Alejandro Gomez Maganda who governed Guerrero in the 1950s and he was of Filipino decent too. And Maganda means beautiful in Tagalog too.
Filipino Mexicans (Spanish: Mexicanos Filipinos) are Mexican citizens who are descendants of Filipino ancestry.[1] There are approximately 1,200 Filipino nationals residing in Mexico.[2] In addition, genetic studies indicate that about a third of people sampled from Guerrero have Asian ancestry with genetic markers matching those of the populations of the Philippines.[3]
The Filipinos introduced many cultural practices to Mexico, such as the method of making palm wine, called "tubâ",[11][12][13] the mantón de Manila,[14][15][16] the chamoy,[17] and possibly the guayabera (called filipina in Veracruz and the Yucatán Peninsula).[18] Distillation technology for the production of tequila and mezcal was also introduced by Filipino migrants in the late 16th century, via the adaptation of the stills used in the production of Philippine palm liquor (lambanog) which were introduced to Colima with tubâ.[19][20]
Filipino words also entered Mexican vernacular, such as the word for palapa (originally meaning "coconut palm leaf petiole" in Tagalog), which became applied to a type of thatching using coconut leaves that resembles the Filipino nipa hut.[4]
Various crops were also introduced from the Philippines, including coconuts,[21] the Ataulfo and Manilita mangoes,[22][23] abacá, rice, and bananas.
A genetic study in 2018 found that around a third of the population of Guerrero have 10% Filipino ancestry.[3]
Ramón Fabié y de Jesús (1785 - November 28, 1810) was a Philippines-born New Spanish mining engineering student who joined revolutionaries in the Mexican War of Independence.
Isidoro Montes de Oca (1789-1847) was a Mexican of Spanish descent born in the Philippines who was a revolutionary general who fought in the Mexican War of Independence between 1810 and 1821. He was among the commanders of the army of Vicente Guerrero and José María Morelos. And was a trusted man of Vicente Guerrero and was his sub-General.
Originating from the Rancho de La Alhaja, in the current municipality of La Unión. He attended many war actions under the command of Morelos and Guerrero. He was head of the escort of Generalissimo Morelos called the 50 pairs. The main battle action where he stood out was that of the Treasury of Tamo, in Michoacán on September 15, 1818, in which the opposing forces numbered four times greater, they were totally destroyed. On the death of Don José María Morelos, on December 22, 1815, few insurgents remain fighting the royalists. The majority were pardoned but Vicente Guerrero continued fighting in the mountains of the south, who in the hacienda of Tamo (of the State of Michoacán today), together with Don Isidro Montes de Oca and with few and poorly armed insurgents, inflicted a real defeat on the royalist José Gabriel de Armijo and they also got enough equipment to properly arm 1,800 soldiers of freedom who in the future will deserve the respect of Agustín de Iturbide.
He stood out for his courage in the siege of the Port of Acapulco in 1813, under the orders of General José María Morelos y Pavón. As well as in the Cuautla Site. He was present in the historical deed called Acatempan's embrace, between Iturbide and Vicente Guerrero. Near the end of the war he reached the rank of captain general. After the end of the Mexican war of independence, he obtained some positions in the government of the republic; standing out as senator of the State of Sonora. Later retiring of the public life and taking refuge in the town of Petatlán, Guerrero; where he dedicated himself to the administration of his property, as well as to the activities of cattle raising and agriculture. He spent his last days of life in that place, his remains are in the parish of Petatlán in whose town he died at the age of 58. At the death of Vicente Guerrero, Juan Álvarez was the political heir. Álvarez began to direct the followers of President Vicente Guerrero sacrificed in 1831. Other minor caciques and military leaders, including General Isidro Montes de Oca, joined around Álvarez.
According to Ricardo Pinzon, two Philippines-born soldiers - Francisco Mongoy and Isidoro Montes de Oca - were so distinguished in battle that they are regarded as folk heroes in Mexico. General Vicente Guerrero later became the first president of Mexico of African descent.[1]
Around the 1930s, the municipality La Unión Guerrero adopted its current name, La Unión de Isidoro Montes de Oca, in honor of the insurgent captain. His remains rest in the municipal pantheon of Petatlán, Guerrero.
The tuba drink is a traditional craft beverage that gives character to the state of Colima Mexico. However, this tropical “elixir” it's still unknown to many visitors. Tuba is a unique drink brought to Mexico from the Philippines by the Manila Galleon in the 16th century

What I find interesting is that many of the Manila men's descendants went on to fight against the Union on the side of the Confederacy in the Civil War. I've been trying to find the name of the squad, battalions, company Etc. There seems to be a few that even served in the Union Army.
It is good that you put this video out however some of the fellow Filipino Americans I've run into are a lost cause. It's funny how they wear the sun and 3 star sign on their shirt but when told of History like this they cop an attitude like they don't give a damn. They are too preoccupied trying to be urbanized, rappers and Jabbawockeez nowadays! None the less, there are some who do give a damn and vids like. this will come in handy for them. Hey how do Filipino Americans get confused if they are Asian or not? The Philippines just hosted the Asian Games. The Philippines are one of the founding members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The Philippines do not compete in the Pacific Games with other Pacific Islands nations. The Philippines do not join Pacific Islands Forum like other Pacific Islands countries. If they even spent 1 minute to look it up, they'd find out the Philippines is in Southeast Asia. It's not even partially located in the Pacific Islands region.
As far as I have understood po, the first documented Filipino migration to the US made complete sense to me.
Due to extreme limitations of sea travel during the early times, this is what made sense to me po.
When Magellan's galleons first circumnavigated the earth and at one point landed in the eastern islands of the Phil, (although Magellan was killed), as the giant ships exited our waters, some natives were both either taken by Spaniards as their servants and some took their chances as stowaway s, traveled with the galleons very distant from the Philippines.
They somehow got the chance to either escape or were freed to a strange land also close to the waters since that's where they landed.
It turned out to be the bayous of Louisiana, US of A.
And they partially thrived there, feeling at home with the waters close by and built up a small community.
That was documented in the 1520s po and has got to be the first ever for our race for obvious reasons po.

A friendly correction: The pensionados who came in the early 1900s were NOT the first Filipinos in the United States. The first Filipinos in the US had formed a permanent settlement in Louisiana in 1763 before it was admitted to the Union. Having said that, you can say that the first Filipinos technically were in the US in 1812 when Louisiana became part of the US. However, the first landing of Filipinos in North America was in Morro Bay, CA on Oct. 18, 1587, some 33 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and 263 years before California was admitted to the Union. The Morro Bay Filipinos were sailors identified as “Yndios Luzones” (or Luzon Indians) who served in the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade on the galleon Nuestra Señora de Esperanza.

Lol! I laughed at 4:30 when he said the others learned how to sail long before Europeans learned how to sail outside of their little continent!
Of course sailing from island to island in the philippines was the only method of transportation that can reach far and trade goods with other countries as far as china, malaysia, indonesia, taiwan and even as far as japan. But its an overstated fact. We just dont know who went to sail first, far from the country of origin to another foreign country. Egyptians, old greece also did it and the sea people. Even the tribes who live in easter island did it too. Spaniards came in late, because before spain became a unified country there were a lot of wars and invasions, even thd muslim group called umayyad caliphate ruled over spain before they became a unified country. First people to arrive in spain are the phoenician, they arrived by boat from the middle east to settle down there and made it their home. So who is first to sail is not the europeans or anyone we know. Its a food for thought but we cant claim it who did it first. Theres no real records to show, only guesses and preconceived claims.
And yet no filipinos sailed across to America, they had to wait for the Spanish and Mexicans to take them there by force

One of the lasting things Filipinos introduced to North/Central America is "tuba" (coconut toddy). I believe it is also called "tuba" in Mexico. Filipinos also introduced tuba in many of the Pacific islands (Micronesia & Polynesia) and is also called the same in many of these islands.

There was the Manila- Acapulco galleon trades which had Filipino sailors as part of the crew. Some of those guys never returned to the Philippines. Some went as far north as what is now California.
Remember that 1/3 of the U.S. used to be part of New Spain.
Large Filipino immigration didn't start until the U.S. occupation period.
