Dropping a new crate engine in my 65 Mustang

  • I've had a 65 Mustang for right at five years now. I finally got motivated to drop the crate motor I have into it.
I spend some time talking about the motor mounts as they were the most difficult part of the install. (Which isn't saying much).
I should have done this years ago.
    Parts list includes
7/16" x 1" coarse thread grade 8 bolts to go into the block
3/8" x 3 1/2" coarse thread grade 8 bolts to bolt the mounts to the frame
1/2" coarse thread grade 8 nut to assemble the upper mount to the lower.
Bought my upper mounts a local autoparts store, got them within a few hours, and paid half as much as online sources.
Link to the drawing I used drive.google.c... If you have the source for this file let me know and I'll gladly give credit where credit is due.

A 65 Mustang - Ah well, we all have our problems 😏. I note that it was the friend who was crawling under and doing all the work - fair enough - as I decided at your age (Oh so long ago) that I was too old to go crawling under cars anymore. But did you cast the rocker covers 😊 - nice job... Martin

Perry! I’ve been thinking about some of the things that would be just cool to cast. And seeing as you are an car guy, and an aluminum caster. What a totally wonderful project it would be to cast your own custom valve covers! They don’t have to be high precision and you could put whatever images you wanted into them for a very cool custom part for your cool car.

Well, now the old steed has a new heart! But I hate to tell you this but that is the wrong transmission you put in there! Sister had a 68 fast back until some doofus rear ended her. Hit hard enough to push bumper into rear tires, her seat broke and she was thrown into back seat, impact pushed her car into oncoming traffic. Grill was pushed over front tires with engine pushed into dash. After she healed and the lawyers got through she bought a 70 black on black Merc. comet gt.

A bit late to this thread but I have a 1965 Mustang Coupe and intend to drop a 302 in as well. Was that the stock C-4 transmission that you dropped in with the engine? Did you have to have the transmission rebuilt prior to (or any modifications) prior to reinstalling it?

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Eric, I'm late to to the reply 😄 I actually bought a T5 transmission for it. I had to cut the tunnel a little to get the box to come up through the floor. I needed to cut about 1/2" out of the front of the box.

Excuse my down under lack of knowledge, but could you explain a crate engine please? We used to have funny expressions here, a long engine was complete block with head, whereas a short engine was sans head. No idea what a crate engine means, I imagine it came in a crate but that does not describe it very well to me.

    • @swdweeb

On V8's it is generally easier to mount the insulator assembly (see drawing) one side to the engine and the other side to the chassis.
The engine mounted one drops in and holds the engine close to final position while you struggle to get the other side, the transmission, the flux capacitor, and the coffee maker lined up. 😂🤦‍♂️.
