    I live in the State of Oklahoma in the US (just above Texas). We have 4 seasons ranging from -27°F in winter, heavy thunderstorms and rainfall in the spring, 110°F in the summer, and first frost (32°F) in the fall. Succulents have to be moved indoors and outdoors in order to thrive here. I'm amazed you've been able to keep your Echeveria PVN is so compact in Ireland. Well done! We're in our 3rd week of overcast rainy weather here and my echeveria have started stretching out a bit.

    Hi Lyn! I love your videos and your high spirits.
    I actually use worm castings to fertilize my cacti and succulents. And believe me, worm castings work absolutely fantastically on them as they work on all my plants. I am a fan of worm castings, because there's not one plant that doesn't respond to them with vigorous growth and health.
    I live in Berlin, Germany, and my cacti and succulents spend the summer on my balcony which faces south-west. It gets hot at times, but this summer hasn't fried them. Instead, I succeeded in saving their lives form the Monsoon rains, which probably also drenched and soaked Ireland.
    Take care, Lyn! Enjoy your plants and say hi to Hans.
    Best wishes from Berlin!

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lyanne :-D thats wonderful news you have been gifted an Echeveria from your friend, yes any good quality well draining succulent soil will work well for these plants, as long as its well draining and the soil dries out fast it will work well for Echeveria, Tomato feed is fantastic for encouraging blooming too, and use it at half the strength that they recommend for tomatoes with every 3rd watering you give them in Spring and Summer, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and have a fantastic plant powered Sunday today XXXX

    i just bought one last week and sat it in full sun and now shes got nasty brownnspots :(( i brought her to the covered front porch...i always kill my echeveria..but i water them in the winter, so this year ive got 13 or so new ones and one called "Allegra " has pink and yellow flowers...i bought her blooming so happy thoughts!! thank you so much for this information...i also got some climbing aloe and a golden tooth one...but im goung to try my hardest not to water this winter...it bothers me soooo much not to water, im like the water fairy..haha, but i watch your videos and its like. pep talk not to water..gonna try this with my echeveria this year, since your no water worked for all my cactus last year :)) lots of love, light and thank yous from indiana as always 💞

    • @juula9469
      @juula9469 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dont put them in the full on afternoon sun maybe, the brown spots mean it got burned. (Its kind of special, the lady in this video says a lot of sun, and other people say that you shouldnt put them in full on afternoon sun)

    • @stormisouthful
      @stormisouthful 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to harden them. Basically train your plants to sun mine was doing this as well and I would put it in the sun for a hour or so then in shade for a week or so then a little longer over time now it's in full sun all day every day and it's doing great. I think they arnt used to the sun as much when they come from stores because they sit in a building and or in a garden area with no direct sunlight

    Hi! I love your channel you post so many great tips. My echeveria is doing a strange thing its opening up almost the light green part of the leaves nearest to the middle is now visible? Do you know what it is doing?
    -Thank you

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Madii for your wonderful comment :-) I haven't seen that happen before with the middle opening up, is the middle of your Echeveria forming into a hole at all ? if it is going light green in the middle and expanding it could be new growth a mine tend to expand from the middle of the rosette and sometimes they can be lighter coloured in the middle, but if your Echeveria is opening up and you can see a hole forming in the middle of your plant this could be more serious, but fingers crossed that thi is not what is happening, keep me updated on your plant, and sending you an abundance of love from Ireland for a wonderful day ahead XXXXX

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats so wonderful you were gifted one of these Echeveria beauties Corina :-) the best thing to do is to rotate it regularly as they have a habit of growing towards the light :-) some of the Echeveria's grow longer and taller as they age and drop their lower leaves and often form into a wonderful trailing plant and this could be what is happening to your plant, if it is in a position where it gets ample sunshine and it is still growing taller then it could be that this is normal for it to do so :-) thanks so much for your fantastic comments and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness from right across the Emerald Isle for a FANTASTIC Sunday ahead XXXXXX

    To be honest I think echeverias are a difficult one to grow as the leaves on the purple ones tend to rot! I really need advice on watering them😬

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for watching Peter :-) Echeveria's are difficult with their watering as the lower rosette leaves tend to rest on top of the soil making them prone to rot as well as any water that gets caught in between the rosette leaves, I find watering them from the very bottom of the saucer and letting them take up the water from below is the safest bet, I also like to use a water nozzle pump sprayer where i can get the spray right at the very base of the plant, but it can be a difficult one and I will make a separate video on watering these plants in the coming weeks as they are trickier than the other types of succulents because of their rosette shape :-) sending you heaps of love and tons of happiness from Waterford and have a FANTASTIC new week ahead XXXX

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So sorry to hear about your echeveria, yes I would get it out of its pot to double check that the roots are ok and that there are no signs of hidden root pests to be on the safe side, and check under the leaves for hidden pests that could be sucking on the leaves especially between the rosettes, check that the main stem is not going brown or any signs of base rot etc, if all looks well then it could be that your Echeveria needs more regular watering as they shrivel fast in warm sunny weather, good luck with your Echeveria and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Friday XXXXX

      Hi Becky :-D the good news is that its normal for the lower leaves on Echeverias to go floppy and then dry up and fall off, and this is normal for them to do that, and sometimes when you get new Echeverias they can often go a bit limp for a few days until they acclimatise into their new environment, they should perk back up again after a week or two, water your Echeverias every time the soil in the pot has dried out, but here is a link to a video I made on How to remove the dead lower leaves on Echeverias : th-cam.com/video/DSab4wXkWhM/w-d-xo.html XXXXX

Or just a bit of water?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MarronStone Hi Marron :-D the best to water is to soak the whole of the soil and then let the soil dry out completely before watering again, the flies are a pain and it sounds like they may be fungus gnat flies, they are mostly harmless to adult plants, but can be harmful to young seedlings as thye can eat the young roots on seedlings but not on mature plants, but you can use the yellow sticky fly trap paper to catch them, this works well although not the most aesthetic LOL! but you could change the soil and re pot your Echeveria into fresh soil, because the flies lay their larvae in the soil and its their tiny grubs that attack the roots, this would get rid of the annoying flies, but I place a strip of the yellow sticky fly trap paper on the side of any pots I see the flies around and this kills the flies and their grubs for good, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXXX

    In the video you mentioned that people shouldn't be touching the succulent leaves, because it can wipe off the coating of the plant. I've some aloe vera plants, and before I watched this video, I didn't know anything about the coating! I have many times touched the leaves of the plant, especially when I have to clean them from dust. I've then noticed that some of the waxy powdery coating got off, but I thought it will recover and make a new layer. How can I next avoid wiping the coating off, when I clean the plant's leaves? Does it harm the plant? Does it make them weaker? Can it recover agian?

    • @desertplantsofavalon

      Hi there :-D the good news is the coating is more aesthetic and rubbing the coating off does not harm the plant at all as its more of an aesthetic coating :-D what I find works best for cleaning the dust off Echeveria and Aloe and Haworthia etc is using a small artists brush or a blusher brush that is soft to get into all the nooks and crannies of the plant :-D its soft enough to remove the dust but not the coating :-D thanks so much for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and heaps of PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle XXXXX

      Hi :-D yes they do tend to stretch as they get older and often will grow towards the side and lose their compact shape, you can prune them if you want to keep them more compact, by cutting off the bottom part of the stem from the top rosette part and then allow the cutting to callus over and then plant as a cutting, and new shoots will re grow from the cut part, but I let mine grow and hang over the pot, and they make wonderful hanging baskets over time if you leave them to grow as they want to

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jobet :-) thanks so much for your wonderful comment :-) If you are growing your Echeveria's outside then what I would suggest you could do is during the wet season to bring your Echeveria's inside the house and try to keep them as cool and dry as you possibly can, this will help to keep them more compact and in shape as being kept cool will prevent them from wanting to grow as fast, but it is difficult though because of the high temperatures where you live it may be more difficult to keep them cooler, you are so lucky with the warm temperatures in the Philippines but I can imagine the heat and the wet makes it hard to care for them, but definitely try to keep them in a cool and dry place indoors during the wet season if you possibly can :-) If you already grow them indoors already and the wet weather and lack of sun makes your Echeveria's less compact in shape then the other thing you could do is to get some grow lamps to encourage the extra brightness during the wet season and this will help to prevent them from growing straggly and losing their compact shape, hope this helps, thanks so much for watching Jobet and sending you loads of love and heaps of happiness from Ireland and have a wonderful week ahead XXXX

    Hi Lynn, I love you videos :) I just got one of these as a gift. I use to have them but they would grow tall and die on me. How can prevent this? I am in Canada zone 8 and have them inside. Thanks so much :)

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kitty :-) thanks so much for your wonderful comment :-) I find that Echeveria's will grow tall and 'Leggy' when grown indoors but in a position that is not that sunny, if you can grow them in a window that receives as much sunshine as possible ideally a south facing window then this will really helpt to keep your Echeveria's more compact and prevent them growing tall, also if growing these plants in a warm room over winter can encourage them to grow tall and leggy due to the low light of Winter and the excess heat but there are some Echeverias that grow into a trailing plant and its normal for them to grow tall and then lean over their pots as they grow older, but if your plant die after growing tall it can be caused by too little light and or too much watering, hope this helps and good luck with growing these wonderful plants in the future :-) thanks so much for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness from right across the Emerald Isle to Canada for a fantastic Wednesday XXXX

    is fertilization a necessity?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Eren :-) Yes because if you are growing cacti and succulents in a pot then over time the plant will use up the amount of nutrients that are available in the soil and this can cause the plant to go sick and lack colour, short term your plants will be fine without fertilization and if you were regularly re potting every few months this would be ok, but I would definitely recommend fertilizing these plants at least once a month during their active growing season, thanks so much for watching and have a fantastic weekend ahead XXXXXX

    How do you manage high humidity?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there :-D the humidity is always a tough one here in Ireland and UK, its an ongoing battle LOL! I usually open windows and doors on bright sunny days in Winter to help ventilate as much as possible, but I find keeping the cacti and succulents dry and not watered from October until mid March over the winter rest period helps to prevent any chances of fungus or rot away from the plants, thanks so much for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Sunday XXXX

      @@desertplantsofavalon thank you for such great advice. Humidity is becoming a big problem here, and I have worried about watering with so much moisture in the air. Also, I have two winter-flowering plants ... a kalenchoe blossfeldiana and a thanksgiving cactus. Will they bloom if I don't water them over the winter? My kalenchoe (also a gift) was in full bloom when I got it four months ago, but almost immediately started shedding leaves. The leaves seemed healthy, but I couldn't breathe on them without more falling. I hadn't discovered TH-cam channels yet so had to guess. I stopped watering, reduced light, and cut back most of the blooms (thinking they must take a lot of energy). Now the leaves are tiny but are firm and green. It hasn't offered any new blooms, but even with less light & no water it's hanging on. Should I give it a good soak before winter, or leave it be?
      (I am SO glad I found your channel!) 🌵PLANT POWER🌵... Have a wonderful Sunday evening.

      @@samikirk05 So happy that you found my channel too :-D the good news is because Thanksgiving Cactus and Kalanchoe blosffeldiana are winter flowering plants, you can still water them in Winter, they are one of the few succulents that still need to be watered in Winter, in Winter I water both of these every time the soil has dried out in their pots, keep the Kalanchoe blossfeldiana in a sunny or part sunny position and the Thanksgiving cactus in a bright but indirect sunlight position for the flowering, thanks so much for your wonderful comments and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Monday ahead XXXX

      @@desertplantsofavalon good Monday morning from Canada 👋 Another cool & humid day. I think you just saved kalenchoe's life! When I realized summer wasn't her normal blooming season I tried to encourage dormancy, but with autumn arriving early should I start now to wake her up? Should I do this gradually? I would hate to put her into shock. Also, have you ever seen a kalenchoe trying to put out roots 2 inches above the soil? They're growing from where a branch joins the main stem! I haven't wanted to interfere (it's so amazing to see) so if it's not doing any harm, I would love to just see what happens next. The plants & I all thank you for your great advice! I hope I'm not asking tooooo many questions!

      @@samikirk05 Hi there :-D and don't you worry about the questions as I am happy to help in any way I can, yes I would start to wake her up now by introducing water gradually, give a good watering enough to soak the soil and then allow the soil to totally dry out again before watering again. Roots can often appear along the stems on Kalanchoe's as they grow, and they do this as they are trailing plants in habitat and the roots lock into the ground, and this works well for propagation too :-D and its normal for them to do this :-D have a wonderful Tuesday today and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER XXXX
