  • Swap Axle Length: Don’t lose time to busted axles!
    By Brian Gillespie
    So, you have your swap all buttoned up and you’re ready to kill the game at your local meet, track event or just drive thru. You’ve cleared all your engine codes and it sounds bad ass. You let off the clutch and start to pull away. It feels good, really good. So, you really hit the throttle to let it really sing. Then tragedy strikes and you’re going nowhere fast with axle grease coating random parts and worse case scenario, bashed parts smacked by a free spinning axle shaft. So, you are stuck asking yourself, “WTF just happened?”
    We know what most likely happened, your axle wasn’t the right size. Carter and I are here to spread the knowledge so you can diagnose axle issues related to the length of your axle and check them for proper length.

      @Marco Banuelos I ended up using stock axles. The issue I actually had was the previous owner slide into a curb. The suspension components were all replaced, but the motor and trans were pushed 3/4" towards the passenger side.
      I ended up having to fabricate and weld in plates on the chassis mount locations to move engine and tans back to stock location. That fixed my problem. Car has not blown an axle since.

    Very good information!
    When I first replaced the axles in my EF, I wound up getting a pair with smaller diameter spline shafts. I didn't realize it at a glance. Once I tried driving though... that nut loosened up fast! (Luckily I was in a safe area - private property, no traffic)
    It was an important lesson to learn.
    Oh, and the computer system at the parts store had them labeled as "standard" and "accept standard" 🤷‍♂️?

    Great content as usual! Definitely handy for the k swap I'm doing for my CRX.
    With that said - do the stock axles from an 02 RSX Type-s have an acceptable length to use in a CRX once the k motor is in?? I planned on getting new hasport axles but might need to save some budget and wondered if I can use what I have from my type-s; the axles are still in great shape. Figured I'd ask the experts but I can check too based on this video ;) Stay safe and keep doing what you do!

    • @BrianGillespie_brianathasport
      @BrianGillespie_brianathasport 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Type S axels have too large an outer joint for the CRX unless you use the Karcepts 36mm hubs. As for being the correct length, I haven't tried those so I can't say for sure.

  • @cstcomputers
    @cstcomputers 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wish I had seen this video before I tore my cv axel out for the second time because it was vibrating like crazy. It's for an 05 Honda accord hybrid 3.0L V6 and I ordered it from e-bay because I broke a lower ball joint and it tore the original one out and ruined it. (whoops), after researching numerous sites I found that the overall compressed length for stock axels should be 22 and 4/5ths but the one I got from eBay was and is 24". So too long was a problem and I ordered another. It would have been nice to know that in vehicle measuring trick... I will know when the new one gets here this week... Not sure how someone can send a "New" CV Axel for an 05 Honda accord hybrid and send one that is over an inch too long???

    Dang live stream ended I think brian said rsx base axles will work with the tsx trans, also will I need to use a tsx or rsx cables i already have a ktuned shifter but no cables yet

    • @BrianGillespie_brianathasport
      @BrianGillespie_brianathasport 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You need the K-Tuned shifter for TSX and Accord. Then the TSX or Accord cables work. For the axles, anything that works with the RSX engine in your car will work as long as you have RSX manual or 02-11 Civic intermediate shaft. If you use the TSX intermediate shaft get the Hasport axle for that swap. And it has usually been my experience that one of the base RSX axles is on the short side.

    My DS Axel was going out (started slinging grease). I replaced the axle, but once I started driving (it still drives fine) I noticed this sort of screeching noise (a noise similar to bad breaks). Any ideas on what it could be causing the dreadful noise? It occurs on both straight driving and turns.

    • @BrianGillespie_brianathasport
      @BrianGillespie_brianathasport 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Screeching isn't usually associated with axles. I suggest jacking up the car front of the car and putting the wheels in the air so you can run the car in gear and sweep the wheels right and left to see if you can recreate the noise. Make user you use jack stands to secure the car and don't let anyone stand in front of the car while you are doing this.
