Off topic - I always feel inspired to get off my arse and start taking photos after watching your videos. Something about them just drives me on, maybe it's because you are so real and honest or because you explain things so clearly and frankly - don't know! But thanks for the continued inspiration!
I feel your pain. My first studio was paid for using a construction loan in 1982 for the then 'affordable' $25,000. That amount today (applying the inflationary habit of money) translates to about $600,000. The $25k sure seemed fair at the time but I do wonder how new people in the business can build what we did. My first studio was 4000 Sq Ft (371 Sq Meters),big enough to park the studio van inside and have three shooting spaces
Nice studio explanation. The funny thing many people do not get is how much space a big shoot needs, my old studio was about 3,600 square feet with maybe 2,800 for shooting space, as the jobs got bigger I shot maybe 20% of them there, the rest were either a large rental studio or sound stage.
One funny thing i have and you probably dont... I have 8ft tall x 25 feet long/ articulating portable walls that come in a rolling flight case. They colapse into 4ft tall sections, and are black on one side and medium grey on the other. I think they were originally display walls for a school but have become a welcomed asset to my studio... Probably paid less than $50 bucks USD at a 2nd hand store, person who sold them to me had no idea what they were.
A point to note for starting businesses: this obviously depends a lot on where you are from, but a lot of places will have government-backed loans for small businesses that can be an interesting place to start when you start out your business. In flanders, you have entities who will not only loan you up to 75% of a starting project (up to 200k I think?) but will also sit down with you and go through your business plan, help you figure out if you can pay of the loan, etc. This is at no extra cost - the goal of the government is help new companies get started and be successful, not profit from you with a loan (They will do that with taxes over longer time :) ) There is no shame in loaning money for a new business, if anything, it can be a wise choice - you spread out the cost over time and with inflation it could very well be that it 'costs' you less money in the end because the currency has devalued over time.
Nice video breakdown of your studio Scott. Good stuff. Especially the Coffee area… Particularly the espresso zone. The ROK EspressoGC & Manual Grinder. A work of art . I have the same kit. Excellent grinder, but the espresso pump is like using a Bullworker. I like the challenge of getting a great brew. Consistency is key. It takes me back to my E6 processing days 👀 I look forward to seeing your new studio when it’s done. May the Force be with you.🌀 Jim🌀 (-: :-)
Hello, How do you clean with that much gear "visible out but to the side", please? Specially, dust. I like this visual esthetic too. Having your tools in front of you is stimulating and makes you want to get to work. But in the same time, it's a nightmare to clean and quickly everything is turned grey by dust. It's not a pleasant experience, nor does it give a very professional image. Do you have a secret? Or maybe it's not important to you? Possibly, it's just me, caught between my distaste for dirt and my laziness about cleaning.
Ummm.. I'm nervous. Those chairs are some of least attractive things I've seen in a long time. Maximize productivity. Don't kill the vibe. My only other credos are don't date architects. Don't date actresses. You're welcome. 😉
Big thanks to todays sponsor valenciatheaterseating.co.uk/products/valencia-tuscany
Videos like this is why this is one of the best channels on TH-cam.

"Old Bowens Bombproof" I'll second that.
I just love your actual studio. Reminds me when I´ve work with my uncle on the 90´s with old school photography ... Sinar, hasselblad, Mamiya...
I found this very interesting. Good luck with your new project. It sounds really exciting and I can't wait to see more of it.

Ill be honest, I have assstants and a cleaner haha
Have you given much thought to what you want to do when you stop your commercial business, Scott?
Do you own the building?
Never mind 😅 I guess I should watch the whole video before I ask questions 😬
