i was completely in awe at this work of art when visiting the Vatican City a few days ago. The good news about this collection of Greek and Etruscan art / pottery is that 90%+ of visitors bypass the collection to head for the Sistine. This leaves space to enjoy the incredible collection in peach and calm.

Nice review. One of my favorite works of art as well. The scene, characters, style, those cloaks, and more is just amazing. I want a reproduction of this one in particular one day.

I definitely remember this piece from my art-history course, though I didn't learn nearly as much about how it was made. I love hearing about the inventiveness of artists and processes they use to achieve the desired effect(s). Very interesting.

I photographed this vace twenty-five years ago, had been running from museum to museum around Greece, and found it in Rome. Thanks for the brilliant analysis. There was a slight reflection of my t shirt on my photo, sadly, that I didnt see until I got home

The armor and shield depicted here are the old set of armor of Achilles. Patroclus got his armor and was killed by Hector, so Hephaestus forged Achilles a new set of armor with a magnificent shield described in such detail by Homer, that we have later reproductions after that description.

I find your point on the layering of slip to provide texture very interesting, but I can't find any evidence for this. Have you got any sources I can look at to ramify this point?

The vase was found in several pieces within an Etruscan tomb. It had been exported from Athens to what is now Italy in antiquity. It was reconstructed in the modern era.

I don't think Achilles is tense I think all those clues show one thing. He's moving. He's leaving forward to move his piece of the game, probably an astraguli. If you are holding something and lean forward, it gets taught against your body while you press against it. He's moving forward to move his piece, that's all.

Great video as always. Just a minor correction: Ajax was going to slaughter Greeks after losing Achilles' armor to Odysseus, but was tricked by Athena into slaughtering sheep instead. Other than that minor detail, great stuff.

Why Achilles and Ajax wearing classical greek armor i mean trojan war happen during the bronze age and the greeks back then are not called greeks but myceneans and minoans .

So interesting story about that. First of all, we come into conflict with the legitimacy of Homer's Illiad story, which is where these characters or people come from. Did it actually happen? Maybe. If so, how much of it actually happened? Which parts is Homer taking creative freedom with, and which parts is he pulling from actual real life? Thus, Achilles could have been an actual person, could have been a made up character, or could've been a fictionalized version of the combination of certain people.
Now, assuming Achilles was real and an actual live person, the most common explanation is that he was buried in Troy. He was given a ceremony and his body burned/cremated in the ceremony. His ashes were then put in an urn, and a "tomb" was made for Achilles, as final resting place for the urn or his ashes. Other variations include his ashes being secretly buried or spread somewhere else.
