  • Detailed explanation of how to open a painted shut wood window with tools needed and how to properly use them. Plus, tips for super stuck windows and things to look for when all else fails!
    This is my updated video on this topic that (I think) better explains how to to do it, and how to know if a window is painted shut.

    Thank you for making this video! It is very encouraging to see a feminine southern woman, like myself, doing this work because it gives me the confidence to do it myself and not rely on (wait around for) someone else to do it!

    This is the most detailed tutorial on opening windows I've seen. Thank you!

    I too am here after watching today's @SavingHarrodsburgCastle video and hearing Frank and Carrie's recommendation. Great tips for sash rescue! Wooden sash windows, modern or vintage, I never pass up a chance to preach, save them all 😊

    Wow, your video is by far the most comprehensive version of this I've ever seen. I just got a house from 1940 and every single window is stuck somehow so this is very useful. I'm subbing because I'm sure I'll need more help. 🤣

    Thank you Adrienne! I have beautiful wood double hung windows that need some work to make them sing. Some of them are painted shut but the wood is still good after 75 years. I've done my research - old windows in good condition with good storm windows have the same insulative value as new windows. I'm working on a very stubborn on - the top sash is painted shut crooked. Even with shrink wrap on it during winter (I live in Maine) it makes the room colder. I'll try your WD-40 trick; it sounds like it could be helpful.

    Here on a recommendation from Harrodsburg Castle - the Mooreland House restoration DIYers Frank and Carrie. Always great finding another person passionate about restoration of old homes.

    I do love me learning about a new tool! If your windows are screwed shut (why 🙄), are the screw heads not going to be fairly apparent?

    • @AdrienneLovesOldHouses
      @AdrienneLovesOldHouses  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I know right!! Yeah, some people screwed them shut when they got air-conditioning, thinking they'd never open them again. Hopefully they would never have a fire! But anyway, sometimes the screws are easily seen, but other times, so much paint and/or caulk has been globbed on the windows that you can't really tell right away. The hardest ones to see are the nails in the sash channel.

    I sprayed foam insulation around my window and it’s hard to get open- would I need any additional ideas ? I pulled the foam off and am trying to go around the cracks with a screwdriver- so far it will not budge . I guess that was a bad idea using that spray foam ! It’s my only window that opens - all others are painted shut . Now I am gonna try these ideas - but I have not seen any ideas online to help with spray foam

      I have zero experience with spray foam. Is it spray adhesive foam? If so, that could be the problem.

      Try some silicone spray. It's a handy thing to have around the house anyway.😊
