    If only the Super Nintendo version used the Super FX chip(which Starfox used), then it would have at least been playable.

      I'm actually surprised that Argonaut never ported Race Drivin' to the SNES using the FX chip. Jez San actually did that amazing Game Boy port, which was surprisingly smooth and easy to play. I'm sure that with his porting skills, combined with his deep knowledge of the FX co-processor, he could have made something which played very smoothly.

    The Atari Lynx version, whilst technically impressive, is ruined by it's awful sluggish controls and lack of tracks.
    Sound was basic.
    The awful oversteer though, ugghhh..

    I've played Genesis version of Race Drivin since my childhood , and this game still looks impressive.
    Powerful Genesis processor can do the things that SNES processor will never can , even with Super FX chip.
    The Genesis version also has a f*cking map editor , that even more impresses me.
    Thankfully , i don't have SNES since childhood (In Russia it wasn't very popular due to high prices on console and games) , because almost all multi-platform versions on SNES sucks in comparison with Genesis , and Race Drivin is not exception.

      This was 2 years ago but still; you are really missing out on a lot of great games if you don't want to play Snes games just because there are more multiplatform games better on the Genesis, because the Snes probably has more exclusives games than multiplatform ones, or at least arcade ports that didn't come out on the Megadrive.

    • @NotATube
      @NotATube 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MCMXC5 Yeah, but as far as converting this game is concerned, the Mega Drive *is* basically the same as the Amiga. The custom graphics facilities of each machine are essentially irrelevant as they're not of benefit to a "true 3D" polygon game, and neither has hardware-based polygon support. So most of the heavy lifting is going to be done by the CPU... which is a 68000 running at almost the same speed in both cases.
      The arcade machine has an additional twin GPUs it uses for the polygon calculations, so the Mega Drive is far closer to the Amiga than to the arcade.
      Of course, this assumes that the Amiga version was written as well as it could have been- given the hardware- in the first place.

    It amezes me that not only 8bit machines can render polygons at hardly playeble speeds, but even most 16bit versions struggle to run the game at a smooth frame rate along with laggy controls.
    It's average that despites the C64 uses sprites(wich saves alot of intensoive cpu power,but it's just slower then other 8bit versions,hell even the gameboy version has polygons but some magically how runs smoothly.

      Retro Core Same here, most games were 25c, but Hard Drivin' was 75c, and when Race Drivin' came out, it was a whole $1 to play... it even had a bill feeder on the side of it! It's still the only arcade game I've ever seen with its own bill feeder. On my $5 weekly allowance for arcade games (my parents bowled on a league, so I spent every Friday night in the arcade), I didn't play very much of either of these, and whenever I did I was terrible cuz, you know, what 10-year-old is gonna be good at driving in a simulator? I didn't even know what a clutch was!

  • @JudgmentStorm
    @JudgmentStorm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Lynx version should have been better. Look how well S.T.U.N. Runner turned out.
    Saturn is good in arcade mode... I don't care for real mode. The BGM in real mode is great, but the textures & added roadside objects didn't turn out so well. A lot of the roadside objects add distracting pop-in which isn't in the arcade.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the Lynx version of Stun Runner is better because the actual track is not made of polygons. This leaves more Cpu power for the actual "cars".

    • @JudgmentStorm
      @JudgmentStorm 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RetroCore Scaled sprites? I know Lynx is good with them. Might have been better to make Lynx Hard Drivin' this way.
      I've seen a video of the NES prototype one & it's actually decent. It surprised me, with the NES not having sprite scaling or much CPU power. The stunt track loop actually looks better on NES than SNES. Tengen shouldn't have given up on that.

    • @RetroCore

    Nice, I wasn't expecting this game :)
    Oh Hard Drivin', a soft spot for me. It was one of my 1st 3D experiences in video games along with Voyager and both on my Atari ST around 1989. It was really something special, this feeling of gettin' lost in a virtual world, which became so real...
    More recently I discovered the Mega Drive port + the Genesis port of the sequel, Race Drivin', and both are pretty good. I prefer the latter thanx to the added content + the better sound FX when you start the car engine ^^
    As for the others ports:
    - The Saturn one is great, already in my checklist but I know I need it (and even more now that I watched your video and learnt about the resolution & frame rate improvements).
    - Amiga/Atari ST ports look okay but if they play that bad... (I haven't played the ST version since ages so at the moment I really can't say anything about its playability).
    - The ZX one, quite impressive for the system.
    - The SNES port is crap, SNES can barely do anything 3D without the Super FX.
    - The C64 port is even worse, complete horror.
    I never had the opportunity to play the arcade original but it was groundbreaking for its time.
    Also I know it's a Hard Drivin'-based video but considering the few more Race Drivin' ports maybe a video which cover the 2 games would have been better/more convenient? Another reason for this: the Game Boy port (yes, Game Boy) of Race Drivin' which is surprisingly good.
    And last thing: I know there's a Race Drivin' a Go! Go! game for the PS1 which seems kinda related but not sure about this. Any idea?
    Anyway thanx for the video dude, it was pretty cool.

    The Spectrum & Amstrad versions can become playable with practice. The key is knowing what they've done to the controls.
    The Accelerator appears to control the rev counter, so if you set the revs to 4, then let go, the car will accelerate to 60MPH (same place on the speedo), then stop accelerating.
    As for the steering, there's an indicator on screen showing where on the analogue axis the steering currently is, with left an right moving along that axis. The key to straightening up, is that there's a dedicated button for it - SPACEBAR. If you play with keys, then use of the spacebar makes it very easy to straighten up, and once you've grown accustomed to the framerate and collision detection, which were terrible, then it's possible to really master the game and get round the course several times before beating the Phantom Photon.

      I used the Framemeister XRGBmini to capture the Saturn footage but everything else in this video was done via emulation from a laptop direct to the desktop's capture card via HDMI. My other show, Retro Core from the new series (coming soon) will use only real hardware. No emulation at all.

    • @nekononiaow
      @nekononiaow 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Retro Core I am assuming that the reason you are capturing your laptop's video output instead of having the emulator save a video of the session is that this causes too much of a load on the CPU which makes the emulation worse?
      Mame has a great feature which allows to record your session's input which lets one play the game at full frame rate, then you can replay these inputs while recording the video in an uncompressed .avi with the emulator faithfully playing each frame before saving it. Unfortunately, I don't think many emulators have such a feature. WinUAE does not have it as far as I can recall which is a shame since that would definitely make it simpler for you (and many others) if it had.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Laurent Giroud hi, Yes I know about the video record options on some emulators. This is a great feature but as far as I know they all record at 29.9fps. Battle of the Ports is actually filmed in 60fps which is what most retro games run at. I'd actually like to fillm using the emulators but I'm afraid that it would put too much stress on the laptop.

    • @nekononiaow
      @nekononiaow 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Retro Core I think Mame records exactly at the frame rate the game is playing at but it's very possible that other emulators are not that flexible.WinUAE which is the best for the Amiga does not even have an official documentation for the feature... I'm starting to think I could probably give a look at the source code and see if it can be easily adapted to output at the actual frame rate the Amiga is running at (usually 50 fps for PAL games and 60 for NTSC).
      This said, when playing PAL version of games on the Amiga you cannot obtain 60 fps, some kind of upscaling to 60fps is necessary. Since you are using a capture card you are essentially sampling the emulator's output at the desired frame rate regardless of the actual emulator's display refresh rate.
      I wish I could say I this explains the choppy scrolling of the Amiga ports but alas these are usually so crappy that they almost all have choppy scrolling in the first place so it's hard to tell if the 50 to 60 fps sampling is causing it. :)
