    Seeing this on display at Toys R Us made Ridge Racer and a Playstation a must have for me that Christmas. I don't think I was ever really won over by a demo unit except for this once. It definitely had that "wow factor" going on for it. This and Battle Arena Toshinden kept me busy for a while. Also, I was never great at racing games, so once I finally unlocked the black car and realized I didn't have a memory card to save my progress I left the game on and went out and purchased one. The brief Galaga game during the game's loading screen on the Playstation was a really nice touch.

      Ah yes, I loved the little demo games they had on the initial loading screen, really cool touch at the time, never saw anything like it back then, or even now for that matter. The Playstation in general just wowed the hell out of me at the time.
      I just couldn't understand why anyone would have chose the N64 over it, used to have so so many arguments in school about which one was better. Seemed like everyone I knew was playing the N64 instead.
      The Playstation was just so much better and had so many great games compared to the N64. Although I will admit that Mario 64 was the one and only reason that I had to have an N64 as well, although I didn't get one until a couple years later.

    • @Pichuscute
      @Pichuscute 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eh, the 3DS version was the game that almost convinced me this entire series was absolute garbage. It's entirely on-rails, which I would struggle to even call a true racing game. Feels more like recent 3D Sonic, lol. Thank god I gave it another chance with Type 4.

    • @Pichuscute
      @Pichuscute 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IslandBoy-808 I mean, 5 might be fine, but otherwise the problem is that those games play themselves. It ruins the point of a racing game, where you're trying to perfect a racing line through a circuit to beat opponents. That hardly matters if every single turn is on-rails and you're hardly penalized for touching walls. And I'm not really sure what gameplay part of a racing game is left when you take that out. Not much, to be sure.

    My god I was obsessed with this series when the OG Playstation first came out. It was the one game I bought with the system and I played the living hell out of it! @@RetroCore Ah, shame to hear that. I remember around when the Playstation first came out I walked into a Kaybee Toys and they had Tekken on a kiosk machine playing and it just blew me away. I thought the animations of the Jack character to be hilarious when he would win. If I remember right he's a robot and when he wins he pounds his chest like a Gorilla and fall over backwards. I just had to have it after seeing that.
      I actually can't remember where I first saw Ridge Racer but I do remember me just HAVING to have it, it had to be the first game that I bought with the system. I just always loved the way the game controlled and the drifting mechanic in it. I was able to learn how to masterfully drift pretty much right off the bat and it's just a really addictive mechanic the way the drifting works in the game. Not very realistic of course but extremely fun and rewarding to pull off.
      And of course the music... holy hell the music was amazing! It was actually the thing that got me into Techno music. I was like what on earth kind of music is this? And so I did some research into it and found all about Techno music. Got real big into DJ's like DJ Irene and Dieselboy and such.

    Is it just me or does the original PS1 version looks more lively than the N64 port? The relative lack of pop in is nice, and there's a nice smoothed look, I guess because of the bilinear filtering, but it doesn't feel like as much is going on.

    • @RetroCore

      Textures played a huge role when comparing third party games on those consoles. N64 could run at a smoother frame rate, but with limited space to implement textures, the final result is a smooth spectacle of washed out graphics. Soul Reaver on PS1 is a master class on how to implement textures to compensate for relatively poor graphical punch.

    The PSP emulation of this game has taken quite a bit to mature. And I think even today it still has glitches, however they are improving. I do notice some slight frame dips and audio popping in parts, which may suggest the computer is probably at or close to its limits. However from my understanding this may be more to the emulators inefficiency than a computer performance. PPSSPP was still working on optimizing back in 2015. Still very impressive emulation performance though as I think you have mentioned before that you use a laptop for all of this.
    And a few tidbits I learned on Ridge Racer Turbo, that the exclusion of extra competitors on the track was in an effort to save on the PS1's limited processing power and ram so they could implement other features. You are very right in saying its more of a tech demo. Or perhaps a proof of concept. The PS1 was painfully short on system ram considering its capabilities and not having the luxury of using rom to stream game assets. Some of the little subtle things they did with this version were actually quite impressive even though it may not really seem so to most people. Better texture filtering and perspective correction leading to a substantial reduction in 'pop-in' that the ps1 was known for.

The first time I saw a playstation in a store in Caracas, this was one of the few games displayed, inmediately hooked me up with the console. the psp look so great truly an huge improvement from the original versions. by the way what psp emulator is that? • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, not at all. The arcade really does look that crisp. It probably looks better than it does because it is followed directly by the PlayStation version which does look a bit messy. All games in this video are not using filters and are running at native texture resolution. The video is captured in 720p however but that won't make a difference to the texture quality.

    One of my favourite series! I definitely like the new drifting system better than the old one as it makes playing longer sessions a lot more comfortable... And the newer games do make you re-race the same tracks over and over and over again.
    The DS version is , well, shit. The less said about it the better. Luckily Namco made up for that with an excellent 3DS version... but then they dropped the ball again with Unbounded. Oh well.

    The only game I was genuinely good at. I would play it a ton at home, and go to the mall and set lap records. There was a Java version on phones back in the day, and it was the proper polygon 3D version, not some outrun interpretation of a 3D Racer. I managed to get a hold of the controls and played that version too. Only version I have now is the iOS version on an old iPod touch :(. The current iOS version is trash.

    Just to note the N64 version wasn't developed by Namco but by Nintendo Software Technology (or NST for short) in the US, though likely overseen by Namco. It was only their second ever game and I always found it pretty weak compared to the PS originals. Still, it is better than the sort of port it got to the DS which to me was terrible.

  • @rockhyde7775

    Breaks my heart we didn’t get Tekken 64 which would basically be the N64 version of Tekken 2. It would also have an exclusive character to it and he’d of course be from a Nintendo IP, probably Ganondorf from the upcoming Ocarina of Time who’d be a hidden boss and unlockable character. I mean we got Ridge Racer and Resident Evil 2 on the system, why no Tekken 2 or Street Fighter Alpha 3? :( Yeah they’d be inferior (because they would somewhat slower and have blurry graphics) but it would’ve given N64 fans something to talk about back in the day. It seems neither Namco nor Capcom cares that much about the Nintendo 64 judging by the few games they put out on it. If you were a FG fan and a Nintendo fan, you must’ve had it rough. I can empathize with that. On the other hand, Sony and Sega were showered/blessed with J-fighters during that generation but Sony still gets fighters even to this day. But enough about that. Us N64 players got Ridge Racer but not Tekken. :(

    I wanna know how the PSP Ridge Racer REALLY looked. Because on my emulator, I can have it play with super awesome graphics but then the game will be played at only 30fps. If I go to the standard graphics with effects on cars (which still looks great but not as smooth and sharp) it goes to 60fps. Hard for me to decide which I like playing on more, but I think the fps for me wins over the graphics. Bigger difference in the gameplay then the graphics. How was the PSP version???

    Found Ridge Racer controls to be way too hard until Ridge Racer Type 4, and much preffered Daytona. I've had a ridge racer game on just about every system since (usually a release title for a new console)and is one of my favourite racing games.
    They just don't make 90's arcade style racers like Daytona, Burnout etc. anymore so Ridge Racer is the only place to go for arcade thrills and i'm just not that into racing sims.
    Ridge Racer Unbounded is a good game too though technichally not a Ridge Racer game as made by Bug Bear and only published by Namco.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't even call Burnout arcade style racing. Daytona and Ridge Racer were the last two great arcade racers to be ever made. There are others such as Jelaco's GT24 but it's not as good as those mentioned. Since the end if the 90s there been no new really cool home arcade racers IMO. The best seemed to be cart based.

      +Retro Core I had it for my PSP. It is really smooth! The slight auto-steering made it so you could pull off ridiculous stunts, like doing 360s, or even drifting the "wrong" way!
      You did forget to mention that you could even play New Rally-X on it, and you'd unlock special cars if you scored a lot of points!

      A Brazilian exclusive mobile phone level game console that had no physical media for it. Think of an Ouya but way before that existed.

    Its pointless to include N64,Psp and Pocket Racer, (there is a DS also) these arent ports of the original arcade game.
    System 22 difference with Psx is about the same with Model 2 and Saturn,game on the arcade is much more better visually with higher resolution,lots of more effects and details and ofcourse 60fps.
    Tech demo is an improvement ofcourse but even that cant match the arcade System 22 graphics,that wasnt Namco's target anyway.
    Still,Ridge Racer was made good on Psx and kept constant 30fps action,unlike Daytona USA on Saturn,which while is a better game overall-it suffers from big frameskips and watching them on megastores side by side back then,made you feel that Psx is stronger (and cheaper) and thats what you need.

      Vasileios the Model 2 was more powerful than the System 22 board. If nothing else Model 2 had texture filtering, which the System 22 didn’t. So I wouldn’t put the comparison that way. I think the PlayStation has the easier job reproducing Ridge Racer than Saturn did Daytona, which even had two extra tracks. Sega did wonders with Sega Rally and VF2, but all the other Model 2 ports were visually lack lustre even the second round of Daytona.
