Pothwari is still a dialect of Punjabi albeit a distance dialect. All of the Pothwari speakers can understand standard Punjabi, this is not always true the other way around, particularly if you never had any encounter with a Pothwari speaker. Even within Pothwari there many regional dialects spanning large geographical area starting from Attock in the Pakistani Punjab extending into Indian administrated Kashmir where it is known as Dogri where it is written and has a growing literature. Even Dogri is now on Google translate, the langauge is still mutually intelligible with standard Punjabi. It is written in Devnagri script.
The language is a mix of Hindko and Standard Punjabi, and speakers can understand both. Efforts have been made to develop it as a literary language, but there is no established local standard yet. It is written in the Shahmukhi script, as seen in the works of Punjabi poet Mian Muhammad Bakhsh. In the early 20th century, Grierson classified it as part of the "Northern cluster" of Lahnda (Western Punjabi), but this classification has been questioned. Pothwari, along with other Lahnda varieties and Standard Punjabi, are considered dialects of a larger "Greater Punjabi" language. Due to the influence of dominant languages like Urdu, Standard Punjabi, and English in Pakistani media, as well as the religious influence of Arabic and Persian, Pahari-Pothwari is incorporating more loanwords to expand its vocabulary.
