Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca resigns after after punching referee

Faruk Koca has resigned as president of Ankaragucu after punching a referee at the end of a Super Lig match on Monday night.
Matches in all Turkish football leagues were suspended indefinitely by the country's football association after Koca ran onto the pitch and struck official Halil Umut Meler following their top-flight game against Rizespor.
On Tuesday, a Turkish court ordered the arrest of Koca and also remanded in custody two other suspects over the violence, the justice minister Yilmaz Tunc revealed.
Tunc said Koca and two others were formally arrested for "injuring a public official" after prosecutors took statements from them.
In a letter confirming his resignation, Koca wrote: "After the match we played against Çaykur Rizespor last night, due to my attitude towards the referee Halil Umut Meler, who managed the match, Mr. Meler and his family, in particular; I apologise to the Turkish referee community, sports public and our nation.
"How and why the subject came to this point is independent of the event. No matter how great injustice or wrong it is, nothing can legitimise or explain the violence that I committed, which I definitely did not desire.

The Turkish FA need to accept some responsibility for this. For decades they've allowed fans and clubs to behave in a manner that can only be described as feral, especially for "welcoming" foreign teams in the Champions League. Blaming the referee now is an utterly pathetic response, what's to blame is the unchecked uncivilised behaviour within Turkish football. The president involved HAS to receive a lifetime ban, as well as any players or club officials who were involved in the assault. The team itself should also receive a big enough points deduction to see them relegated, with an equally huge points deduction suspended for the next 5 years. There are plenty of football clubs, but football would not exist without match officials.
And all allowed by UEFA. If English clubs held banners proclaiming "Welcome To Hell" in their stadiums, and visiting players were attacked by fans and police officers, as happened to Manchester United when visiting Istanbul in numerous encounters, if visiting fans had been murdered as has happened in Istanbul on more than one occasion, then every English club would have been banned from Europe indefinitely, but the Turkish clubs and their FA just pay massive backhanders to UEFA and we are all expected to look the other way. It's a disgrace. Let the Turks play in Asian competitions with Afghanistan and Pakistan where they belong.
Also when he says he did not desire to violently punch someone. No one runs onto a football pitch and physically attacks someone without the intentions of hurting them.

Koca is a coward. He has put his club in an extremely difficult position and then thinks he can just walk away from it. Hope they bring the full justice of the Turkish law onto him.
This behaviour is very common among Turkish men, when emotions get high many become very violent against each other. Turkish people are very passionate about football as it goes hand in hand with extreme machismo attitude/ over the top pride. Very sad for the referee to experience this abuse.

This is unacceptable. I am deeply shocked and disturbed from this encounter. Punching a referee is unacceptable. I am even more upset that the former president should apologise to the referee face to face rather a phone call. What a coward way to avoid it. Respect to the referee who have a stressful job to do

Man, I think the referee has too much power to decide an outcome of a game . I think this is the beginning of referees getting punched because anger leads to violence . It's only a matter of times before people get tired of bad referees. I saw it coming. It's not good but it was only a matter of times.
