- A Turkish Super Lig game erupted in chaos when the match referee was punched by the president of one of the teams before being kicked as he lay on the ground.

Ankaragucu’s president, Faruk Koca, struck the referee, Halil Umut Meler, at the end of their home match after Rizespor scored a 97th-minute equaliser. Koca walked on to the pitch and hit the referee when the final whistle blew in the 1-1 draw at Eryaman Stadium. The president of Turkey's football association, Mehmet Buyukeksi, condemned the event as an "inhumane attack" and announced an indefinite suspension to matches in all Turkish leagues. Koca and two others have been arrested for "injuring a public official".

Yeah I watched a doco once where the cops were talking about charging a guy with assault with a weapon because he booted someone. A lot more power in your leg muscles then your arms

I hope that ref is okay.
I've seen the behaviour of grassroots football in the UK and that can be quite bad.
I've haven't seen anyone assaulted but its come close a few times and the abuse hurled at refs by fans, players, coaches can be awful.
The ref has left hospital with a small fracture under his eye and has decided to continue refereeing. Faruk Koka, the man who threw the punch, has resigned and was arrested.
Yes it can be bad but this Turkish incident is 100 times worse as he was knocked out by the club president and kicked while down.

@@LPCLASSICAL it was also a televised event with security. There is no security at grassroots and I've seen coach's trying to have a pop at one another shouting and swearing so the behaviour of the players won't be much better.

Surprised this hasn’t happened before today. Professional referees should answer to the corruption. That referee I. Turkey is milking the punch. Typical corruption
Brian Clough never tolerated any of his players to swear or abuse the referee.
Before a game he would ask the referee to give a short speech on discipline.
Now you see players screaming at the ref the managers abusing referees an example,e is of Jose Mouriniho who would always moan and abuse the ref.
Clough is was a one off a true great manager.
He had the composure to shake the hand of the bent referee Muro after the Forest vs Anderlecht Uefa Cup semi in ‘84, even while suspecting he was up to something nasty.

I'm not condoning this behaviour as its wrong on every level but I believe there's a simple reason why it happens, or why there's a strong potential for it to happen, at any top level game. The reason is that there's FAR TOO MUCH MONEY involved in the modern game, growing it into a monstrous entity worldwide. This places pressure to perform upon managers and players, pressure from sponsors, etc., to win games and trophies. It has grown too big, too fast and needs calming measures applied
before something worse than this punch happens.
