I would not have started drumming if it hadn't been for playing rock band when I was 9 years old. Was over at a family friend's house and played the video game. Afterward, I begged my parents to buy me rock band. Didn't take long to want private lessons, and I've been playing and learning ever since. I'm glad that you made this video!

I learned how to play the drums from rockband

    Fucking thank you.
I've been playing the drums for almost 17 years. When Guitar Hero came out, I literally said "This could work on drums, and could get people into playing drums. They should make that".
I think even if there are only 100 new drummers in the world because of Rock Band, that's a net positive.

I started out on Rock Band back when I was in grade school and moved to real drums soon after. My brother who was a guitarist started out in the same way. Rock Band actually made my listening really good back when I was a beginner because the later games added 3 cymbal pads. The cymbal pads were only used for the “pro” difficulty, but they did correspond correctly with the hihat, crash, and ride cymbal, so you’d basically be playing the part exactly. I used to use rock band to practice when I was a kid but I eventually moved on. It’s definitely a good way to get into drumming or music in general.

Just to add to this, when the "pro" difficulty was added, they announced an Ion electric drum kit you could purchase for use in the game. It was an actual electric drum kit that you could buy a drum module for and actually play with outside of the game. There was also a freestyle mode in the game so that you weren't forced to play a specific song. I had one of the Ion drum kits and would use it to practice with Rock Band.

This game literally taught me the basics of drumming. Staying on time, fills, and just being able to pick up the sticks. It’s not the best thing to learn, but eventually it turned into playing the real drums. I give this game some credit to my love for music

I can attest to the fact that rock band turned me into a drummer. I used to play saxophone and never really felt a connection to it. I remember in high school I skipped school and told my dad I was going to get a game and learn how to play the drums. I found a crazy passion that I never knew I had. I was waking up in the morning and the first thing on my mind was that I wanted to play drums.
I would play for hours a day on rock band and eventually bought my first kit. I remember being nervous about how loud they would be in my parents basement, but I was fortunate enough to have awesome parents who would pretty much let me play at most hours. I specifically remember taking the pattern from the song “Vasoline” by Stone Temple Pilots from Rock Band, sitting at my kit, and replicating the exact same pattern as I remembered it from Rock Band.
The game not only turned me into a better musician, but it also introduced me to different bands and styles of music that I didn’t even know I liked.
I am forever indebted to this game and it 100% changed my life.

I had your exact story! I was a sax player but I never really loved the instrument. Rock Band made me want to play the bass. (Guitar didn’t interest me much). Nowadays I play bass! Thank you Rock Band/Harmonix.

i started drumming because of rockband. i picked up the drums about a 2 years after. i watched you and drumio before i even had a kit. I REALLY wanted to learn even tho i was 12 years old and only had the rockband kit. i fixed my technique and eventually got a real kit when my family moved into a house. the only BIG hindrance is your left leg. im a metal drummer so i mostly use double kick, but i learned a bad habit of not using my left leg on the hihat pedal to keep time. till this day i struggle to get my left leg independence when not using double bass. your left leg does absolutely nothing when playing rock band, and its still something i struggle with after 7+ years of real drums

I gotta pay my tributes to rock band because as a kid it absolutely sparked my interest in music. Trying to get down fills and playing the right beats definitely helped me build a strong sense of time and rhythm. Of course, being in band during middle and high school also helped a lot, but I feel like if it wasn't for rock band, I probably wouldn't be where I am today, especially the Beatles Rock Band ;)

I was the first person to gold star all the songs on Rock Band drums on any console (see my channel), and at that point realized I should probably learn real drums. Now I've been semi-pro for 10 years (and I say that in jest).

This was literally me. I started actually playing drums a lot later than most (I was 24 years old when I bought my first Alesis E-kit)
Prior to that I played a lot of Rock Band in college with my roommates, I was competing with my friend to be the drummer in the house who could score the most points haha. I played about 2 hours per night, 3-4 days per week for about 5 months. I get the bad technique concerns and those are 100% valid, I'm probably still reverting back to some of those habits. BUT Rock Band taught me just enough about using my hands and right foot together. So when I finally got into playing a real drum set, I was able to progress through some really practical rock grooves successfully because I already had a base level of coordination established from the video game. I felt comfortable using my bass drum foot before I even had a basic understanding of time signature and note subdivision. Songs I played along to on Rock Band were some of the first songs I learned on my Alesis kit
It's a great place to start, if Rock Band is all you have and you are serious about becoming a drummer, just keep the big picture in mind & play with purpose

I was the same! I played RB with buddies of mine when I was in my teens and still till this day! about a year ago I bought a Alesis drum kit and was able to play easy play through songs due to the hours of rockband I put in when I was younger!

I started playing the game, preferring the drums, in my mid 20's at a friend's weekly Rock Band 3 party after work. I drove a hour down to his place to get there after they started, and an hour back after midnight when we quit. I liked it so much I bought the game and drums to use on my brother's Wii. I liked it so much I realized that was a mistake and bought a PS3, another game + drum controller pack, and repurchased a couple of DLC tracks. I got pretty good but not spectacular, though I wanted to transform it into playing real drums. Now, just into my 40's and after being away from the game for almost a decade, I'm getting back into it (rebuilding the endurance in my shins) and have an E kit coming to learn on and also connect to the game.

Deadass, my dad got me Rockband 2 for my 13th birthday, all my homies were there, I was on drums because all my buddies were guitar bros. I swear on my life, I was a choir kid in high school, my gf was in band, I snuck into the band class and started doing basic beats on the drum set there that I had learned playing the game (there was a game mode that actually taught you without backing tracks) and the teacher walked in straight up like the movie whiplash and just sat there and watched me jam out and it was top ten best moments of my high school life back then. I haven’t played in years and I ended up pawning off the rockband peripherals (cried because I’m sentimental over my dad gifting it to me.) but I have been on a kick recently to get a legitimate electronic kit to see if I can still play.
Came here to get a little reinforcement that I’m not crazy and that it seems other people share my story too.
Additional edit: crying rn because my dad gave me a great gift and reading all y’all’s rockband stories got me in my feelings.

Guitar Hero brang me into drums! Played the game for 6 months, broke the drums, then bought a real one. Never took a single lesson (except if youtube lessons does count haha), and here I am 9 years later :D I think those games are much better to bring someone to drums then to guitar. Once I had my real drum, I was able to play things like "Sugar, we're going down" and having a lot of fun after two weeks on the real drum, the adaptation period from game to real has been really quick. Meanwhile you can be a beast at guitar hero "guitar player", and once you get a real guitar, well... You're back to the very beginning.

Playing on expert does teach you how to play drums. It’s awesome how well it transfers over to a real kit, and the opposite is true. Playing real drums transfers over to rock band.

Started playing rock band when i was maybe 6 or 7 and 5ish years later i had to learn to not grip the sticks as hard the higher difficulty i went too. Especially the songs that are insanely hard that i can do. This game is probably the only the reason i wanna play drums. I still play it to get better 15 years later.

I use to play drums when I was a kid, I didn’t Perdue it even though I loved it, now at 53 I bought this used to play and I have been practicing with a pad and lessons for about 3 months and I do hold sticks properly and wanted more control and coordination and movement around the kit. Was gonna buy an Alesia kit and opted for this, I’ve only had this for a few weeks and love it, the most important thing is seeing my improvement on same songs. I just started the medium and love it, I would love to play on real kit eventually, but this is great for progress, for me anyways

For someone interested in technique, they can also apply it to the toy drumkit, in a sense it's a cheap alternative to other kinds of drums, which I think is fine for potential beginners.

Especially in regards to the original being such low quality in comparison. I was looking for videos on e-drum recommendations when I saw this.

Rock band is literally the very reason i can play drums. My freind showed it to me when I was 6, i was trying to be a guitarist, but since i played rockband, my drum skill kicked off, not realy my guitar skills. 8 years later, i only know how to play rockband guitar (cuz i still play it) and im fixing to make a career out of drumming.

I started to interest drum with Rock Band (not guitar hero lol) then went to courses and many years ago me and my blues group had many gigs. It was not a game-only things like rock band or just dance kind of games. They start party for sure but inspire teens and support dream big more than their families. Why today's alpha generation will be desprete you know? Because they do not continue this rockband label.
