Thanks for letting me know that Ghost was physical in generation 1. I filmed this video quite awhile ago so it was already done by the time everyone started showing up on my channel. Thanks so much for comments. In the future I will remember that ghost is physical and that seismic toss hits Ghosts. I'm working hard on your suggestions so expect new runs once every two week!
Lick is a physical attack, probably would have helped with the channelers and against Brock (due to paralysis chance, would have been as strong as pound when you factor in typing), but glad to see you remembered mimic this time!
That's actually not possible. Like Mr. Mime Mewtwo starts off with confusion and it doesn't learn anything until like level 60. There are also no TMs before Brock, so there's no conceivable way to do it
A grass type would be your best setup for non damage dealing challenge. Leech seed is reliable, poison is reliable, and Toxic shares the same timer as leech seed, making a fast killer. Add in growth for badge boost, and a screen move or rest, bam
Agreed. I think Exeggutor is good candidate for this because of his incredible defensive stats. 95 HP, 85 Def, and 125 Spc means he can take many hits, and his types give resistance to many attacks. Speed is low but that doesn’t matter as you’ll be stalling anyway
Great video: would love to see a Ratticate run! Also I see a lot of ghost moves / start using seismic toss way earlier. But something I don’t see here as much is Bide vs Counter. Counter is just a one turn bide that still hits ghosts and you get the TM for free
Dang, you're really getting good with this off brand jrose thing. Really, this was a good run, very interesting voiceover(your writing has improved). Edit: but still, it's not like you mimic jrose. Badun tssh
I think the quality is going to go up significantly with my next few releases as well. I filmed and put this Jynx run together before everyone showed up here. So I've incorperated a lot of your feedback in the Chansey run and everything I'll do after it!
Woo hoo i love these videos. I unfortunately had to quit my job to health issues but i have enough savings until i recover. Scott you’re so fun to listen to.
wow this guy is great at the game. he really has a good thought process around the game and he puts together really intelligently done videos. the data and the methodology and stuff is rigorous and we trust his results.
Very nice, Scott! Good challenge to use Jynx as a physical attacker (mind that "Lick", move! It's weirdly a ghost move and a physical one, as well). I like very much the "humanoid quartet": Mr. Mime, Jynx, Electabuzz and Magmar. Please, do solo runs with Electabuzz and Magmar, as well. These are pretty good and rare Pokémon to devout runs. For Jynx, I specially like her special offensive capability. She's got a pretty nice and overpowered configuration, because of her great special attack stat, decent speed and great typing. My most favorite config for Jynx is to have her starting with "Confusion" (got from breeding in second gen games and trading back to first gen with the "Time Capsule") and, later, with "Ice Punch", "Psychic", "Ice Beam" and "Lovely Kiss". She's a really vicious special machine. She can pretty much easily take down the entire Elite Four with her movepool, speed and Psychic and Ice type moves. It's a real pity that she is so overlooked in the game. Besides Lorelei, Sabrina should've had a Jynx in her party, as well. I really wanted Game Freak to have made the Gym leaders much more complete, challenging and tougher than they were officially released, in the games.
A no damage run is something I'd love to see (and have been thinking about for a while). I think you'd have to allow 6 Pokémon (although the more you have the slower it'll be) because you need to have access to Toxic + another move (maybe Will o Wisp) for damage before you even think about stalling the enemy. Doing it with one Pokémon seems very tough. (I think it would be a lot of confusion luck). I'm not sure it's necessary to limit yourself so much. Hopefully no direct damage is something you work on soon!
This would have been MUCH harder in R/B. imagine trying to slap Koga's weezing and muk to death with Jynx lol. So that's my challenge. I wanna see how physical jynx does vs Red or Blue. Charizard for rival is a must of course.
At first I thought "wait, there's no Eeveelution strong against Jynx in Gen 1", then I was like "oh yeah, Flareon is a physical attacker and Jynx is Psychic!" - basically forgetting both Jynx's Ice typing and Flareon's Fire typing for almost a minute. Shame too, design-wise Flareon is my favorite of the original Eon trio.
I liked this challenge very much I think it was very hard to do, more then it seems to be! And to answer your question I saw an Italian youtuber named Creepy doing a Pokemon white 2 challenge with only non attacking moves, it was absolutely brutal from the start to the end
I can't believe you didn't realize that Seismic Toss works on Ghosts in this gen, it's so obvious you could grab an incorporeal spirit and use it like a basketball, gosh wth man. (No but really, GJ with winning the run. =P)
The fact you can compare Hitmonchan to Jynx and it ends up coming out on top with its brain tied behind its back is more of a burn on Hitmonchan than Jynx, I'd argue. :D
The more i watch challenges like that, the more and more i learn about this game. Did you know you ca suplex a ghost (seismic toss)? All those ghost horror movies are now a joke...
I hope he doesn't use lovely kiss as this will be too easy, but then I forgot this is the same channel that did a Butterfree run without sleep powder and special moves. 😅

I've always liked Mr. Mime, Lickitung, and Jynx. Good to see some representation and I always like to say Jynx shouldn't be controversial. It's was inspired by a Japanese legend but white people have an issue with culture
He's called KISS but can't LOVELY KISS... can he SWEET KISS? "I should really do a Sandshrew run at some point" welp I guess I watched those out of order :). I guess I'm watching the Zubat run next? :)
No damaging moves sounds like a nightmare. Ivysaur and Venusaur start with Leech Seed and get Poisonpowder reasonably early. But still can't damage Grass/Poison pokemon. So I can't think of any alternative to using confusing moves. Gastly-line for the accurate Confuse Ray, or Seaking for Supersonic/Tail Whip combo. Whatever your strategy, good luck!
You have a rule in place stating that if your Pokemon faints at the same time as the opponent's final Pokemon using Selfdestruct then you'll count that as a loss Rather than referring to this particular move alone, it might be better to change the rule to say that if you faint at the same time as an opponent's final Pokemon for any reason, then you will count it as a loss This could quite easily happen from not just Selfdestruct and Explosion but also the recoil damage from moves such as Double Edge, Take Down and Submission

Hey would you be open to doing any Gen 3 runs with some of the more terrible Hoenn Pokemon, like Castform, Spinda, Slakoth, Luvdisc, Volbeat, Illumise, Slugma / Magcargo (I know it was Gen 2 but I think it'd be harder in Hoenn), Tropius, etc.?
I think lapras would be the best choice for non damage run character. High health/def/special. Can learn sing, toxic, confuse Ray, double team, reflect, rest, and substitute. The only problem is it starts with water gun.
Probably somebody said that already but gastly line should be good for no damage dealing moves run. Excellent defence with access to confuse ray and toxic
That first Giovanni fight had me going like "buy submission." It's get terrible accuracy like Mega Punch, but at least is super effective against Rock... And, as a lot of people. Lick is physical and should've been kept. It also has a paralysis chance and is useful against ghosts(edit: in that it hits them and they're weak to it).... Watching someone do the Bide option is just painful. Even seismic toss(which apparently damages them) would've been better. My non-special load-out probably would be -Body Slam -Submission -Lick -Gimmick move like Mimic, Rest, or Substitute; maybe seismic toss if all else fails.
Just throwing out ideas- 6 Mr. Mime run of Yellow, but you hack Metronome into their move set from the start. No items, you can only use Metronome or Double Slap. Not a challenge, just a funny idea. They all can only use their powerful hands.
Bulbasaur line and Oddish line can do toxic/leech seed/poison powder/sleep powder. Leech seed would allow you to beat poison mono and dual types that would resist toxic.
I feel like it's telling that your favorite pokemon is butterfree and jrose's is kadabra. His runs are hard, but you decide to cut your legs off and go run a marathon. As an aside, I like that you do these in yellow because the game is significantly better. The moveset by lorelei alone kinda demonstrates it.
@ 17:25 A no direct damage run would be quite interesting. Gen 1 doesn't have that many non directly damaging moves, though. I can't think of any who would start with one of these moves. www.smogon.com/dex/rb/moves/ : Fissure/Horn Drill/Guillotine technically deal a fixed 65535 damage like Dragon Rage (according to Smogon) Debatably : Bide and Mirror Move sort of., however Counter has 1 power somehow ... Did anyone know that Jynx used to be Lorelei’s signature / ace Pokémon? But after the Jynx racist controversy, it was switched to Lapras, hence why in every one of her appearances after Gen 1, Lapras was her ace.
I appreciate your content and the work you put into them but might I suggest you take some time and do a little homework (besides the actual schoolwork you also need to do lol) for your own sanity? As many have pointed out, ghost type attacks are physical in this generation so you had another option at your disposal with Lick. Just a bit of reading and research on the games could probably help your runs go a bit more smoothly. Good luck!
I'm surprised you group jinx, mr mime, and licki instead of the punch pokemon "magmar, electabuzz, and jinx". The support for this being that they all 3 got baby forms in the next gen.
I don't know if you mentioned it anywhere and I just missed it but I don't understand why you didnt use any ice moves? I thought there is an Ice Beam TM in Celadon Dept store. Wouldnt that be life saving for Erica, Giovanni, Lance, etc?? And I thought Jynx learned ice punch by levelling up?
Is it possible to beat a pokemon red/blue/ and red when the pokemon is traded and over leveled? I know it's annoying enough to deter you from cheating; but could be a unique challenge.

Just letting you know that Ghost type moves are considered physical in Generation 1! You potentially could’ve used lick for the ghost types.
i was just about to write the same thing
I was also going to say the same thing lol lick seems a lot more useful than bide vs some gastly.
Plus lick may have been a bit more efficient against brock
@@eorthanes It definitely would've been more efficient. Rock doesn't resist ghost.
I was wondering why lick wasn't being used....🙄

Mewtwo run, no special. Then one with special. Then compare the ingame end times. You'd be surprised

That's actually not possible. Like Mr. Mime Mewtwo starts off with confusion and it doesn't learn anything until like level 60. There are also no TMs before Brock, so there's no conceivable way to do it
I always thought it was funny that Jynx got a baby Pokemon with Electabuzz and Magmar, but didn't get another evolution in Gen 4 like the others.
Even Mr Mime got an evolution eventually. Maybe a regional form of Jynx will get an evolution in the future?
Jynx got a lot of backlash in its history so best bet is they thought to not touch the evolution line 🤣
lol you made this game so much harder on yourself for not using ghost moves
Seismic toss may work against ghosts if itbwasnt fixed from rb. Also, lick is a physical move
lick is physical not special, even in gen 1
I was shocked when I watched him delete it

Your runs are great. No sleep cheese is a really great decision cause with lovely kiss the run will be can jynx win before anybody wakes up.
You have a rule in place stating that if your Pokemon faints at the same time as the opponent's final Pokemon using Selfdestruct then you'll count that as a loss

A no direct damage run would be quite interesting. Gen 1 doesn't have that many non directly damaging moves, though.
I can't think of any who would start with one of these moves.
www.smogon.com/dex/rb/moves/ :
Fissure/Horn Drill/Guillotine technically deal a fixed 65535 damage like Dragon Rage (according to Smogon)
Debatably : Bide and Mirror Move sort of., however Counter has 1 power somehow ... No Mirror Coat yet. Metronome .
Supersonic, Confuse Ray.
Poison Gas / Poison Powder
Leech Seed/ Toxic is a really good combo in Gen 1
(There is no way to inflict Burn without doing direct damage too, no Will of the WIsp yet)
Leech Seed + Toxic would be great, useless against Plant/Poison, and only Bulbasaur and Eggxecute(unevolved) can learn Leech Life naturally.
a Confusion inducing move will be required for Plant/Poison types, if you don't allow Mirror Move (or possibly Bide/Counter, if you allow them and like to use it on Wrap)
So for Confuse Ray : Ghastly, Zubat, Lapras, Magmar, Vulpix
For Supersonic : Aerodactyl Butterfree Shellder Goldeen Lickitung Magnemite Tentacool Venonat
Mirror Move : Pidgey/Fearow
My suggestions : (Double Team is always an option)
Bulbasaur or Exeggcute with Leech Seed/Toxic/Bide/Rest (and Sleep Powder, Exeggcute for better typing / slower learning ?)
Pidgey with Mirror Move/Toxic/Rest/Reflect (Mirror Move can be an alternative to Bide)
Snorlax with Toxic/ Rest/ Bide/ Amnesia or Reflect (Amnesia for Special Defense, he's not that bulky until Gen2)
Chansey with Toxic, Bide, Softboiled, Reflect (similar... Hig HP means Bide/Counter will probably do a lot of damage
Ghastly with Toxic, Hypnosis, Rest, Confuse Ray
Lapras with Toxic/Sing/Confuse Ray/Rest
Since most of your damage will come from Poison and Bide, sleep moves may not get so much use. Could be nice right before Resting, I guess. Double Team is always an option.

Ice is special
Wouldn't Ice Punch work for the Ghost pokemon too?
Ice Punch is special though since all Ice Moves are special in generation 1
I believe Struggle works against ghost types in Gen I. It might be listed as Normal move but it's actually typeless. Am I wrong?
It's normal in generation one so it doesn't work.
Get freaking clapped yellow version.
Why didn't you use lick, considering ghost type moves are physical.
Yes, please do a Sandshrew run
;) soon
what is this back sprite
Back sprit look like leelas pet in Futurama..think his name was Keebler lol with a wig...
Is it possible to beat a pokemon red/blue/ and red when the pokemon is traded and over leveled? I know it's annoying enough to deter you from cheating; but could be a unique challenge.
Ghost is physical in Gen 1 so I was wondering why you weren't using it and why you deleted it
