  • 11Alive Meteorologist Chesley McNeil provides the details.
Tropical Storm Helene formed in the Caribbean Sea Tuesday morning. It is strengthening as it moves past the Yucatan Peninsula. Helene is producing sustained winds of 65 mph with stronger gusts as it moves northwest at 9 mph.
Helene is forecast to quickly intensify as it emerges in the Gulf of Mexico, becoming a major hurricane before landfall late Thursday along Florida's Big Bend region, not far from Apalachicola. In anticipation of the storm's impacts, Georgia's governor issued a State of Emergency to free up resources to respond to Helene-related impacts.

Looks just like Michelle. Just a heads up for everyone. When Michelle hit, it sat there and hit cat 5. The aerial photos the police had of the aftermath look like a bomb had went off over the town there was nothing left. Please be cautious.
I'm in Lynn Haven so for me I'm watching this extremely closely as I remember this.

If anyone remembers Opal, that's around what you should probably expect, especially if it moves further west and closer to Atlanta than that model was showing (and the official forecast and multiple other models do). And that took down all kinds of trees, knocked out power for around 300K people (30 years ago...), and closed a lot of schools in the Atlanta area for days.

I do remember Opal, 1995. Helene could be worse.

@@petermarshall7352 Definitely could be. It's a bigger storm with stronger winds away from the center and there's the chance it comes in stronger than forecast. And it's forecast to move in a few mph faster than Opal did.
