The Rogal Dorn to me feels kind of superfluous. The niche of “bigger than Leman Russ, smaller than Baneblade” was filled by both the Macharius and its vastly less reliable cousin the Malcador. The Rogal Dorn is now the third chassis type in an area that already has 11 variants that already has multiple points of overlap.
    We’ve got
    Heavy tanks
    Heavy armored transports
    Heavy armored artillery
    Heavy (read Titan-sized) flame tank
    Heavy plasma cannon carrier
    Anti-infantry/suppression
    Tank hunter
    Laser tank hunter
    Assault gun
In the absence of major differences it’s only real draw to me is aesthetics which compared to its others it’s a good deal better, but in context it’s competition in an already contested niche, adding a 12th and 13th options. Until the variants come out the Rogal Dorn doesn’t bring much new to the table.

And to my knowledge the Russ is still the more produced tank, with the Dorn being a heavier variant for when you can't get one of the few BaneBlades around. So... yeah, the Russ is still superior. My headcanon is: since the russ is based on a traktor i think that this is why the russ is so prevelant in the imperium. The traktor is easy to build, long "shelf life" and easy to maintain and repair. Since every planet has use for it everyone maintain a production line for it. The tank itself is a mere upgrade kit for it. Adding weapons and armor. With that every planet has the industry to supply nearby guard regiments and has an surplus of vehicles and personal (the farmers.and mechanics) it can use to bench press into the guard if needed.
This logistical plus negates all the downs this vehicle has.

What the Imperial Guard could really use thematically is a flying carry-al. They have a sky-talon which is a customised valkyrie. But a bulkier, slower and cheaper general purpose carrier that is able to lift vehicles around the battlefield would really fit this 'assembly line clockwork' theme that GW added to the latest release of the Guard.

In terms of lift, lorewise anyway the Guard is missing a heavy lift Vtol chinook equivalent, you've got the medium lift Valk and there are mentions of Drop ships ranging from Company sized up to those regiment like Decourer class Dropships or those monsters of landers you see behind Creed Senior in some of the art, but there isn't really anything mentioned on the platoon scale beyond the odd converted civilian cargo shuttle.
It's one of those weird capability gaps you see in a lot of the armies, I suppose it could be because no one ever found a STC to fit the role, more likely its just no one at GW thought about it that hard!

It's terrible frankly. Placement of those guns on the front is about useless due to lack of any optics for aiming them. Moving the pintle mount to the back is a step back from the more sensible placement on other Imperial tanks. And where the hell is all the storage for the 4-5 different types of ammunition? Why is the Dorn the only Imperial tank that forgot lasers exist? I'm betting all of that ammo is stored in the fighting compartment too so that pretty much any penetration is guaranteed to start an ammunition fire. Something which adding lasers mounts could have prevented.

The Rogal Dorn is exactly perfect as a defensive emplacement.
Can it do overland travel? Yes.
    Should it? Not at all.
This tank is designed to defend a city, ideally at the longest range possible. It is festooned with guns, which means it's full of ammunition. Well, all that weight adds up. So you're taking from the armour, the speed, and the maintenance durability. Sure, future tech, but everything comes at a cost.
The Rogal Dorn tank is meant to intimidate more than perform. How many shots does the Oppressor cannon hold? Let's be generous and say 30-45. Impressive for A fight. One. But. Warhammer is bad at logistics. Most tabletop battles last 6 turns, or like, a few minutes in real life. The lore is drastically different, so it's hard to nail down what's 'real'
Forgeworld usually gives every heavy bolter about 2000 rounds. That's.. better. Certainly better. But, how many of those are used for suppression, as opposed to stopping enemies?
As far as being an actual, real world tank? The Rogal Dorn should be used as an artillery piece, capable of redeploying. Think more like a Marder 3. The difference is that the Rogal Dorn has a lot of anti infantry punch, which might make you think it should go try to use it. Don't.
The simple fact is, it will be outmaneuvered, and with all that ammo on board, a few lucky shots might make those rounds cook off.
Keep it back, keep it protected. Let the big gun do it's work, then once it's run dry, consider your options.
    But, that's just my opinion.

    • @tomasdawe9379
      @tomasdawe9379 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I Dislike it, not only because i have to stand on air inside the compartment due to a lack of floor and no STC to fix that, but i think it looks nowhere near as stylish as the Leman Russ.
additionally, The Leman Russ is a more balanced design in my opinion, assuming the sponsons are controlled by servitors or automatic systems, the Leman Russ can actually make Due with a 4 man Crew, while the Rogal Dorn looks like a T-35 esque desaster for any Tank Commander.
on the Russ, the Driver can drive, Radio operator can Radio and use the Hull mounted Weapon if need be, the Gunner can operate the canon, its still, shit to not have a dedicated loader due to the large calibre and thus weight of the Rounds, but at least there is only one canon to take care of, and the Commander can actually command reasonably well, given the crew is well drilled.
i assume though the commander also has to assist in loading the main Canon, and give (if present)the sponson servitors orders, or have the Sponson crews help loading the main canon, all in all, not perfect, but okay conditions, not excusing its clear faults, but it is at least in the range of being managable, its a grim dark setting, its supposed to be horrible conditions for the people there, but not horrible enough that death is preferrable to becoming a tank commander.
The Rogal Dorn on the other hand, Bristling with weapons as it is, already presents a desaster for fire Controll, since the Imperium allows no usage of AI, i would assume at least one full servitor is needed for every sponson and the hull mounted ball mounts, already filling up space and requiring significantly more room inside for ammunitions storage and the servitors.
the radio operator and driver both either have it very cramped due to the ball mount servitors, or the vehicle has less space for ammo behind them, also the gunner must have the most shit job ever, if anyone ever saw a 120mm one piece tank shell, its huge, its heavy, now assume having to load two canons as a single guy, without automated loading systems, thats a shitty job if i ever knew one.
i can‘t see the turret being big enough for a secondary loader either, at least not if ammo is to be stored anywhere in reach of the gunner, and still fitting the commander, inside, who also has to direct the fire of 4 servitors, his hull gunner, his main gunner, fire an autocanon or stubber for support and marking targets, direct the driver, and give vox instructions to his radio opperator, that is not a thing a human without cybernetic enjancements can manage.
as we saw in our reality, it is shit to have 2 man turrets, now imagine serving on a JS-122, getting your loader comrade removed, but added a second main gun, and tons of secondary arnaments, who shall manage that?
you would need an entire cybernetic interface like on a relic baneblade for the commander to be able to keep track of everything, it will be pure chaos inside, this is shit if your commissar will execute you for a lack of combat efficiency or skill.
so to wrap this up, i dislike the Rogal Dorn, and i love the Leman Russ, both for their looks, and their logic.
