For me John Barnes was the greatest player I ever saw in a Liverpool shirt and you know you are great when Kobe Bryant said John Barnes was his first sporting hero as a kid in Italy. He was KDB mixed with CR7 and the only reason he isn’t remembered more is because in 1991 he got a bad injury robbed him of his speed and he was only half the player after that and in 1992 the Premier League was created and coverage of soccer exploded around the world most people missed John Barnes at his peak, because Liverpool were also banned from Europe during his peak years.

Totally agree. Still my all-time favorite player. In my humble opinion from 1987 to 1990 Barnes was the best player in the world. Sadly never got to show it on the European stage and wasn't properly trusted by England managers who played to a much more rigid system than Liverpool. Even in 1986 before his move to Liverpool he was the equal of Maradona but was only given 10 minutes on the pitch to show what he could do in the world Cup. Had Barnes started the quarter final against Argentina, or even come on at halftime England would have won the match and possibly the whole tournament.

I would put Daglish ahead of Gerrard for Liverpool’s greatest player although if Suarez had won that title, had stayed a few more years and hadn’t got involved in unsavoury incidents he would have to be in that team and also be in the running for greatest player.

I am lucky enough to have seen every Liverpool player since '73 & I'm absolutely certain the midfield is as good as it gets when you talk about balance with Barnes on the left with Gerrard on the right & Souey sorting out the middle but I can't see a 4 man midfield it has to for me be a 4-3-3 especially as the defence is so imposing with the king in the hole linking the midfield to the front with Salah in a floating role across the line feeding the goal machine that is Rushie, the only change I would make would be Allison for Clem as in 1 on 1 there's no-one better also his distribution is second to none then in the hot-seat you can't look any further than

Gerrard had to carry scrubs, he had Dijimi Traore, Igor Biscan on his team and still solo carried them all the way to Champions League and FA Cup trophies. However a much overlooked left back that was part of the dynast was Alec Lindsey who successfully played for LiVerpool during Shankly's reign in the early 70's and was class, Agree that Souness should be captain but I think Mark Lawrenson deserves serious thought for a centre back spot. You have to have Kenny in the team, and although Suarez is probably the most skillfull centre forward I have seen play for the reds I would agree that Rushie's partnership with Dalglish was phenomenal and given his work rate he would have loved playing under Klopp.

@@KryptonitetoallBS I need to see the players you would have ahead of Barnes as this will be interesting. Barnes didn't replicate his Liverpool form because the way England was setup. Them England teams played awful football and were miles behind the stuff we saw the Liverpool team that Dalglish put together. That 87-88 Liverpool team were playing football never seen in this country. Also just listen to what the likes of Paul Gascoigne say about Barnes. Merson also just a few weeks ago said still till this day England hasn't produced a better LW over Barnes. Viv Anderson called Barnes the best and toughest player he had to try to defend against. Honestly where are this great Wide left players who are better than Barnes. You don't realize how good Barnes was.

As for better English wingers, names which immediately spring to mind are Tom Finney and Stanley Mathews and UK wide you have Jimmy Johnstone, George Best, Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale.
