Regarding Pitch's plot, it actually does make a lot of sense on a deeper level. First he went for the teeth to remove the memories of childhood magic, then Sandy to remove the element of dreams that might create more, then Easter for Hope, and by then the whole structure of Childhood Magic was basically collapsing. Without hope, or dreams, or even memories of those there wasn't any Wonder left for Santa to protect.
Also on a angst “pitch souls have a redemption arc” take, Jamie said he believes in pitch when he was afraid of him, yet in the last scene we can see Jamie go through pitch when he wasn’t afraid anymore. Meaning pitch can only be seen if people fear him, so that’s one of his motives ig
And to answer his earlier question on who was the strongest of the four, I would have said it was Sandman. Belief in the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny would fade, pretty early on, and Santa, probably a few years later, but good dreams? That is something that can stay with you for a long time. And Sandman was the one that Pitch really feared. The black sand and nightmares weren't, really, his power. It was stolen from Sandman. And the more nightmares he spread, the more it weakened Sandman. But it showed that when Sandman tried he could retake his dreams with, relative, ease. This is, also, why Pitch lost control of the Nightmares at the end. They weren't really his. And when his fear surfaced, and he couldn't deny it, he lost control. I love the little demonstration of the Tooth Fairy's power, at the end. Her whole deal is that if you leave her a tooth, she gives you money. But when she tossed Pitch a quarter, and he caught it and kept it, she was now owed a tooth by him, that's why she could punch a tooth out of his head, when he is, fundamentally, immortal. It works both ways.
Actually, several cultures have evil spirits / demons called 'nightmares' that are depicted as black horses (sometimes with flaming horns/hooves/eyes).
"For a second there I really thought there was gonna be a tragic backstory" I mean..... he's a teenage boy that died saving his sister. And his body was still in the water (probably too dangerous for his family to get him out yet) and Man in Moon resurrected his corpse..... Not to mention how this probably affected his sister, to have him die in front of her and in her place. :'D "Where are they now, I wonder?" Probably long gone, sadly. Since the opening of the movie took place centuries ago. The people that couldn't see him might have actually been the villagers of the place he grew up in.

"Good, for a second I thought it would be a really tragic backstory and his Sister died" Jack dying tragically ata young age while saving his sister: Am I a joke to you??
I always thought that the sad thing was that Pitch Black the Boogeyman had a history with the Man in the Moon... which suggests that Pitch should have been a guardian himself, with his center being Courage, but he's gone so far in the opposite direction that he's unable to see that about himself, and instead he's fixated on some villainous plot as his only option. Fear can help us survive and teach us lessons in how to stand up to the bad things in life. But Fear also clouds our minds and keeps us from taking the time to see other possibilities and develop empathy.
@@snurvy Hmm.. while caution might've been another option, I'd say his idea of courage being what should've been Pitch's center would be better, after all, you can only be courageous if fear exists, courage and bravery is not the non-existence of fear, it is when you face those fears head on and throw it aside.
Oh, ouch! I really want more content in this movie series, and I want it to address this! Quick side note, Pitch does have a backstory in the books, but his plot is so different, that I can't see it applying here. For some reason that doesn't really bother me though. We basically got two awesome executions of the same concept.
@@pamdawkins13 I've read the North book and the Sandman and Man In the Moon books, but I admit I'm a bit behind with the rest. I did make my theory about Pitch's center with his origins as a hero consumed by darkness and fear in mind
Jack being overwhelmed and unable to respond when questioned after he comes back from Pitch's lair is one of the most realistic moments of not-explaining-oneself-well I've ever seen in media. It's always struck me- he's not out-of-character, suddenly lacking eloquence. He's just genuinely overwhelmed for a moment, and it fits with a lot of his other almost ADHD-seeming behavior. It's a cliche moment done in a very real way. Me likey.
I love how, at first, Jack *wanted* to be seen and got frustrated over the children thinking it was the tooth fairy who gave them a nice time. But when it came to saving the child's belief, he willingly made it look like a sign from the Easter bunny because the child wanted to believe in the easter bunny... and that made him being seen.
I always had a theory that Jamie is actually a descendent of Jack's sister. When jack tells the wind "take me home" it takes him to Jamie's town. And jamie and jack's sister look very similar
“Look at what we can do! What goes together better than cold, and dark?” Pointing to an objectively beautiful sculpture of ice and shadow as he says this. It perfectly encapsulates how fear, depression, and the darker elements of the human mind can be so alluring to fall into.
As someone who has experienced temporary insanity due to depression... it can be VERY tempting. I would relish my own misery because it was familiar, and took joy in how true it seemed. I would go from giggling to screaming in fear with no rhyme or reason. I was terrified the entire time and I didn't want it to stop, even as some small part of me whispered that this was bad, and not okay... the part that clung to sanity. It doesn't matter how serious you are, how fleetingly you consider it. If you want to take your life, *tell someone*. I'd been seeing mental health professionals for 15 years, depressed for almost half of them, and never mentioned it because, "those were just REALLY bad days, and I made a pitiful attempt anyway. I spend too much time happy to be depressed!" I didn't realize how much I was hurting until the weight came off.
@@JanMaynzI went through something frighteningly similar. I thought I was crazy, I was called crazy (and weird), and I was proud of it in ways I can't explain. On occasion I would think "This treatment doesn't seem normal", but that thought was quickly pushed away and replaced with "Nah, these are my friends! They wouldn't treat me poorly! Plus I wouldn't be this hyper and joyful if something was ACTUALLY wrong!" It didn't help that the mental health "professional" I was assigned to would laugh at me, and things at home were not better Even after I switched schools, it took years for me to realize how much I had been hurting, and how much I still was. Do NOT feel guilty about switching mental health professionals if you feel like you need to! It doesn't matter how long you've known them, it doesn't matter how much you've told them! I have yet to figure out if things become "good", but they DO get less awful!
I watch this movie almost every winter. Just to remind myself of a child living in me. Really I think it's one of the most underrated animated movies of all times. It just awakens magic in my mind the same way Harry Potter does. And that means something ;D
Me too, its in my winter/ Christmas roster, your absolutely right its very underrated and under appreciated, no other movie takes me back to being a kid wanting to believe in the magic again like this one

It's too bad they didn't follow through with making this at least a trilogy. The book series has SO much more worldbuilding that most people will never get to see. Many of the characters have massive backstories that I would have loved to see get screen time in this series.
It's one of my favorite DreamWorks movies! So good 😄 And it all came about because the author's daughter asked her father if Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny were friends. so sweet. I never thought about that as a kid :)

19:40 yeah in Europe and most latin country’s we believe in the “Raton Perez”, a little mouse that gets the teeth. I liked that detail in the movie, it’s a nice way to show that creatures from other cultures also exist in this world, not just the western versions of them. All children’s beliefs are real as long as they believe in them.
Pitch's backstory in the books actually gives him MORE parallels with Jack, in a way. I won't ruin it, but check out the book series. Pitch's story is honestly heartbreaking.
@@CazuhLynn the series title is "the guardians of childhood" and it's by William Joyce. The first book is called "Nicholas St. North and the Battle With the Nightmare King".
A very underrated gem. I'm surprised they didn't make a franchise out of this but I guess it wasn't considered a financial success and the almighty dollar determines all.
Unfortunately it bombed in the box office, which sucks because it is one of my favorite DreamWorks movies. I read they didn't advertise the movie good enough, so it flopped, but I'm not sure if that's true
Yeah. I posted this in another comment and it didn’t just bombed it got demolished. From what I know a lot of it was mishandled marketing. It was released in a busy month as well in between two titan movies one being a marvel movie I think. Also it earned around 300m on a 145m budget so it just barely broken even but that budget didn’t count marketing and some other fees so they pretty much didn’t earn any money on it as well as having to pay some of it out of pocket. I don’t know that exact amount but it could be up to 50 mil they had to pay out of pocket. That’s how bad it bombed. It sucks because I would love a sequel and love that it has been slowly gaining a little more recognition but it sucks and because of how bad it bombed it makes sense they wouldn’t even try and green light a sequel.
Part of what caused it to fail in the box office was also the movies it was released along beside in theaters. It was going up against two well known and popular franchises that movie goers wanted to see on the big screen over the new (and therefore unknown) movie that they didn't know if they'd like or not. If it had been released at a later time when those big movies weren't being released, then it could have stood a better chance.
One of the main reasons it was not a success was bc parents en masses did not like a Russian and buchannear like Santa and thought that should not b for kids and basically didn't take their kids to see it
Something I enjoy about this is how Pitch is both a manipulative forward-thinker with the audacity and strength to face off with the Guardians, and also in fear. Every Guardian is defined by what their center is- Pitch is fear, Jack is fun, North is wonder, E. Aster is hope, Sandy is dreams, etc. I really want them to make a sequel for this.
I would argue Pitch is survival at his core. Yes he manipulates fear and uses it, but fear puts everyone in fight (courage), flight (cowardice) or freeze (anticipation) mode. The effect of fear is to find a way to deal with dangers (or stay out of danger). Besides fear is something you only truly learn to understand/appreciate as you grow up and are faced with harsh realities instead of cute fairytales. Fear becomes more nuanced and children under a certain age are not equipped to deal with fear in those ways yet.
@@Scarletcroft add on that pitch is older than all the guardians in the movie he was the thing that went bump in the night that leads to people being cautious about the world something that you defiantly need when your talking about even 300+ years ago
I have a LOT to say about this movie so I’ll just keep it as short as I can manage with all the resurfaced thoughts. This has been my favorite Deamworks film since it came out, tops Megamind even. I’m not much for Christmas or holiday films, I find most of them cliche and too predictably to be interesting except for a few. This one though, it’s just so unique, never did I imagine a team up of childhood legends like this. It’s actually loosely ( and I say loosely because there are a TON of non-subtle differences between the two) based on a children’s book series “ The Guardians” by William Joyce. I won’t get too into the differences between the book and this movie but I have read the first book, and it’s a very fascinating story as is the world building and his characters. I agree with you on Tooth’s design, it’s actually pretty close to how she’s depicted in the books. I think the feathers and the hummingbird-esque appearance is really unique and quite fitting for her role. As is that kind of ADHD quality of hers and her ability to get easily distracted, it makes a ton of sense compared to the elegant and regal appearance that is given to her and most fairies in children’s stories so it’s a completely fresh take that I love. I am disappointed this never got a sequel, because the book series has a decently sized fandom and it did well from my perspective. Sadly it didn’t at the box office, which is very surprising. I don’t think at this point we ever will get one, but it still remains one of those movies that never get old to me. ( oops… why do I even bother anymore, of course your getting a novel😅)
I agree with so much of what you said here! Having of course just seen Megamind (which I really liked), I would agree that this one is even better. And I also think this deserves a top spot in holiday films. The fact that there is good source materiel to draw from makes it even more unfortunate that they never made a sequel, although I'll take comfort in the fact that it's a great standalone film, and it's not tarnished by having a subpar follow-up. Easily one of my top animations!
@@nickreacts6394 It's absolutely one of my top favourite animations, I go back to it often and re-watch. Unfortunately it was released in 2012, the same year the first Avengers came out so it had pretty tough competition for a similar concept. I do agree about the fact that it's a great standalone film, although I wish that it had done better so that we could have gotten more films. Dreamworks is notorious for its brilliant sequels (note How to Train Your Dragon 2, Kung Fu Panda 2 etc.), so it definitely had a lot of potential for it. Either way, thank you for reacting to it :) brilliant video as always
there was a video essay I watched on this movie, they talked a bit on character design from the books to animation. it's on Ladyknightthebrave's channel!
Yeah. The biggest reason it failed at the box office from what I know and I can’t remember what movies but it released during a busy month as well as smacked right in between 2 titans or something. Maybe a marvel movie and one other but I can’t remember. Yeah. It earned like 300 million on a 145m budget but earnings don’t take into account the marketing for it and they actually had to pay 50m out of pocket or something because of that. They literally didn’t earn anything on this movie so it failed so horribly there is no way they would even try and green light a sequel after how hard it bombed. I love this movie and it sucks but there is the no way they would risk a sequel.
Love this movie, it's easily one of the finest animated movies ever made. Incredibly underrated. I would argue that not only is it very much an Avengers type movie, it's also better than the first Avengers movie.
@@nickreacts6394 As just a stand alone film with no prior attachment from prequel or origin movies, like Avengers had, this one is better ;) The Avengers is good as a part of a masterpiece series.
You should check out 'The Guardians of Childhood' book series where this animation is based on. I think Jack Frost was the bodyguard of the Man in Moon in the previous life when the Man in Moon was still a little kid. Jack's name back then was Nightlight. The Boogeyman/Pitch Black is also an interesting character. Before Pitch became the Nightmare King, he was once a hero of the Golden Age and a great general of the galaxies fighting against the Fear demons, and guarding the prison planet they had been imprisoned in. Until he was corrupted and became the Boogeyman.
Yeah, Jack was a nightlight! Before Manny gave him a chance to be a normal boy. I guess it could still be canon as the story starts during Jack's (human) life. Him being a former nigtlight is the reason he's so powerful actually
Given the Jack Frost book, I'm pretty sure the books and the movie are all in the same canon now and the movie just happens a LONG time after the books.
The movie is actually based off of a book series by William Joyce called "The Guardians of Childhood". While the connections are a little loose, there's some really interesting lore behind it, including the reason why Jack is so damn powerful without anyone believing in him.
William Joyce also wrote the book _A Day with Wilbur Robinson_ that became the Disney movie _Meet the Robinsons_ (you can still see a lot of his art style in there) and he was the lead art design the Blue Sky movie _Robots_ (he also worked on Blue Sky's Epic, too).
@@cosmicriptid The higher powers in that universe are a sort of cosmic pantheon of powerful entities, one of which eventually became the man in the moon. The man's protector (who we now know as Jack Frost) was a literal sentient star, and he packed all the power that such an origin entailed. However, when the man in the moon settled and was safe, Jack decided to settle down too, allowing himself to forgo both his memories and his power to be reborn as a normal human. Then when the time comes, the Moon called Jack back into his service once more after what might have been an untimely death (much like in the movie). Thus he returned as the frozen friend we know now, and it was then that some of that former cosmic power returned to him once more. Don't take my word as gospel though. It's been a long time since I touched the series, so some specifics may be a little rusty.
I just assume outside of book lore that since Jack's core is fun, and children have fun even before they started believing in him, that he was still powerful. After all, the children still believe in fun. They just didn't yet have a name for the entity of that fun.
This series would’ve been RIPE for an Xmas or Halloween special and I’m mad this was never more, I love it so much, really hit home in a way maybe only one or two other movies have for me Also cool side note- you can spot Jack’s sister in the beginning scene in the village, just before he says “excuse me, can you tell me where I am” and also a pretty popular fan theory that Jamie is actually decended from her since they look so similar, making him and Jack distantly related
Honestly this is an underrated film, from the lighting, scene design, choreography in the technical side.. to the lore/worldbuilding on the story side Its sad there was never a sequel cause there's so much you can do with this universe
For the me who read the books. Its make me sad the fact that Jack was lured to Pitch's lair with his sister's voice, the same to Pitch, who in the books was guarding the nightmare's prision but they trick them with his daughter voice to open the gates ( In this point Pitch thought that his daughter was dead) And in the end of the movie when the nightmares took Pitch it reminds me of who Pitch was Possesed with the nightmares. By the way, Pitch's daughter is a badass 💫
Thank-you for pointing out those parallels, they're so good! This movie is in a bit of an odd place adaptation-wise where the actual events aren't very similar, but at the same time, it feels like the creators respected the books too. And I agree that Pitch's daughter is so, so cool.
I love Rise of the Guardians. It's the most magical DreamWorks movie I've ever seen. Shrek has magic and fun. Kung Fu Panda has action, life lessons and fun. How to Train Your Dragon has Epicness and good lessons. The Prince of Egypt has an inspiring story and Epicness. Rise of the Guardians has magic, fun, Epicness and Inspiring Story.
Yep some European countries believe in a Tooth Mouse instead of a fairy! As a kid I saw a human silhouette get my own tooth from under the pillow and my parents used this movie to convince me that the Tooth Fairy had been doing extra work and it absolutely was not my mother who had awoken me ahahah
Also on a angst “pitch souls have a redemption arc” take, Jamie said he believes in pitch when he was afraid of him, yet in the last scene we can see Jamie go through pitch when he wasn’t afraid anymore. Meaning pitch can only be seen if people fear him, so that’s one of his motives ig
the reason that the nightmares turned into dreams when Jamie touched it isn't because sandy was back, it was because Jamie wasn't afraid the nightmares can only attack people that fear them in any way
This is definitely one of those movies that deserved a sequel!! Unfortunately it underperformed at box office and they lost money on it. Definitely an underappreciated film!!
The reason that The Man in the moon brought jack back, was not just because he sacrificed himself for his sister. its because he made her feel SAFE and even made her laugh and see the fun in that awful situation. He brought jack back because even in the winter, when its cold and dark, when humanity is supposed to be afraid the most, Jack taught humanity how to have fun. how to see the joy that you could experience in the cold and frost. THATS why he chose jack
I love this movie so much. It's incredibly underrated. I love the scene where they show jack's backstory especially. Idk what it is about it. It's so simple, yet leaves such an impact on me

This movie was so good. I remember that it was on my list before it went to theaters and I was so sad that it flopped and didn’t get a sequel. I really love the story and the character development. It has so much that seems to be missing from a lot of movies lately.
It’s so nice to see someone appreciate this movie! I’m pretty sure I saw it at least 5 times when it was in theaters and I’m not ashamed to admit it. It’s stunningly creative, fun, and the voice acting is pretty great, too (Jude Law as Pitch was my absolute favorite. Hearing that voice echo and bounce around in the theater was ASMR at its finest). Such a shame that this movie is so criminally underrated; deserves all the love in the world.
May be TMI and I know no-one asked, but whatever. As someone who had a pretty dark childhood but an amazing older brother who took care of me until he went down his own dark path, this movie means so much to me. I had to grow up super fast and raise my mom as if I were the parent by four years old and because of it I'm so far behind in life and am only just now getting to really have fun with magic and this type of thing as a 23 year old. I can't say how much I appreciate the highlighting of a positive sibling dynamic. Sure I annoyed my older brother and tried to get his attention when he just wanted to be with friends, but he was never mad about it. He saw the house and environment I was living in and he tried hard to distract me or even remove me from it by taking me to the park or to the pool. He's eleven years older than I am and he still dedicated a lot of his teen years to hanging out with a young annoying kid, and my appreciation for him is unending. Seeing this for the first time, I almost cried when it was revealed that the reason Jack was chosen as a guardian was because he *already was one as a protective older brother*. So important. Thank you for highlighting this movie!!
I must say i loved the symbolism in this movie. The art design and animation detail was very great too. It really brings the messages and overall story of the movie into play (No pun intended at first xd). The part where he rebuilds the staff i personally think was him realising that he was a gaurdian after viewing his old memories. So in a way he was putting his belief in himself back together. Thus restoring his powers gradually allowing the slow freezing/melding of his staff pieces back together. Its not a long scene but it isnt like he instantly puts the staff together. It slowly melds as he changes his facial expression. I also like this movie because it shows people will grow and have fears in their life but you dont have to let them control you. Its why that line where the kid says " i believe in you, i just do not fear you" is SO FANTASTIC!
I remember loving this movie when I was younger and my friends at the time talking down to me because they thought it was stupid. I'd rewatch it all the time but would keep my love for it to myself. Watching this and seeing someone enjoy it as much as I did was kind of therapeutic for my younger self :) So thanks for the fun video!
9 is incredible! The amount of times I’ve mentioned it to people and they’ve looked at me like I grew a second head. Definitely doesn’t get the attention it deserves
Although I love this movie(Pitch is my favorite non-Disney villain) I always hated the ending. After each of them found out how it feels to not be believed in, how could they casually do the same thing to Pitch? Ideally, they should have let him be in charge of Halloween. Throughout the movie all he wants is to be noticed. Surely there has to a be a compromise in which he's not always destined to be the villain.
My favorite scene is the last one, when they say good bye and Jamie runs to Jack and hugs him. Look at Jack's expression. He's so positively shocked that Jamie can touch him. For 300 years people couldn't see him and literally had run through his body without realizing Jack was there. And now that boy can actually grab him. I love that moment so much. ^^
jack didnt really repair it he forced it together then will together he was able to use his freezing powers which then froze it together permanently which is pretty clever
You were wondering whatever happened to Jack's family? Did you notice his mother and Jamie's mother are the same voice actress? I love this movie so much. Only wish I'd seen it in theaters.
Am I the only one who just realised, since Jamie's mom "knew/heard stories" of Jack frost, she and him might just be very distinct relatives of Jack and his sister
This is one of my absolute favorite animated movies from DreamWorks, I've watched it more times then I can count. Pitch is my absolute favorite character in the movie. In a sense he is a tragic character. Like the Guardians, he also has a center, that being Fear. He is merely doing the thing he is meant to do, yet he is hated for it and treated as an outcast.
In France and French-speaking Belgium, this character is called La Petite Souris (The Little Mouse). From parts of Lowland Scotland comes a tradition similar to the fairy mouse: a white fairy rat who purchases children's teeth with coins.

In regards to the mouse instead of the fairy, I do think it's in certain parts of Europe, in Latinamerica we also have the mouse instead of the tooth fairy, in the country I live is either called "ratoncito de los dientes" or "Ratón Perez", also pretty sure Pitch is what we know as "El coco" here in Latinamerica. I still think is a shame the sequel and series for this movie was scrapped, Rise is one of my favorite animated films and the actual books series has a lot of material, lore and world building to fuel more content.
I remember when this film was released when it first came out. It took years later that I saw it on Free-form. I was astonished at the beautiful animation work. It became one of my favorite animated films. ❤ Here's some fun facts, the movie was inspired from the books, "Guadians of Childhood" by Bill Joyce. The film was released Nov. 21st 2012. Unfortunately it was such a flop that the studios had to layoff most of the artists. One of the reasons it wasn't heard much untill a few years later it started a cult following it got more noticed. The toothfeiry was inspired by Indonesian lore based off of one of Bill Joyce's books. Chris Pine said in one of his interviews that this film is the Advengers for kids. He even admits that playing Jack Frost was one of his favorite roles in his film career. Thor, I enjoy seeing your reaction throughout this video review and got a kick off of your comenterry. It was fun to see...😅
So I just noticed that the Easter bunny talks about how Jack Frost is not useful or is not a good thing and all that.. and he’s Australian.. sooo.. maybe it’s cause here in Australia we don’t really have snow so he is like “snow isn’t necessary “ kind of thing :P
I love how Jamie didn’t say nobody but instead chose to say Jack Frost because he was a nobody no body could see him until then he was invisible, so for Jamie to call him by his name warms my heart
Absolutely underrated! I was so happy you gave this a watch because I was sooo sure it would be a hit. I think they really hit the nail on the head with casting Chris Pine as Jack.
the "why is there no seatbelts" line is so much funnier when you remember he's Australian and in Australia every thing has seatbelts and they are legally required to be worn.
Yes, the Little Tooth Mouse character is popular in a lot of cultures. Most notably in Spanish and French speaking countries, but also appears in Indian and Japanese folklore
I will never not be mad that this move did not get a sequel. Theres so much source material they could've used from the books, especially for developing Pitch.
Just noticed that Pitche's lair looks a lot like a dark version of Tooth's I wonder if it grew to resemble it after he stole he stuff. Like a shadow grows to resemble what cast's it. Always loved thos movie and it's message. Will always have a special place in my heart.
Yes! in Europe and other parts of the world we 'believe' or have a little mouse as the one who changes our theeths for money xD in Spain we call him 'El ratoncito Perez' (kinda like: Perez the litte mouse)
A little info about Jack's staff and powers. A common misconception is that it is the source of Jack's magic, but that's not true. It's a conduit for stronger magic. He is still a winter spirit without it, but it's his only belonging and a vital tool. He can still make it snow, make frost, and as you saw in the movie, bring frost creations to life and make "happy flakes". His breath is also magical. But he can't fight or fly without it, which is why he couldn't escape the ravine. It helps him control the magic that is already within him. Which is why he was able to fix it in the first place. The first attempt was just him smashing two pieces of dead wood together. The second was him actually believing in himself, using the magic inside of him to mend it. Also, because Jack is a seasonal spirit, he doesn't exactly need believers to sustain himself as the Guardians do. But believers would definitely make him more powerful. I'd imagine it's also a comfort item as well. He spent 300 years almost completely alone, with no one to believe in him or give him the time of day. The Guardians knew of him, Bunny had even met him, but none were really there. And to make it worse, he never knew why. He had no memories. He's a 14-16-year-old boy who drowned trying to save his sister and was forced to spend centuries alone, with only a staff to his name. And when he finally did get his memories back, it was too late. Everyone he knew was already gone. His age is also why he might come off as selfish initially. His emotional and mental growth was stunted due to being stuck as a teenager for eternity. Which is why I personally hate any ship that involves him. Because they're all older than him. But his being selfish is also due to him only having himself for company for so long. He's had no one else to talk to. Of course, he's going to be eager to help them if it involves him finally learning his purpose. Gods know that the Guardians never helped him during his whole immortality. That's why they had to have a catch. This movie is dark and angsty, but they really glossed over just how much. And I know no one asked and I’m just rambling, but I just love this movie.
I believe in this film the Tooth Fairy represents *memories* , childhood memories to be specific. Btw I also think the facets of childhood represented in these characters is pretty clever.
Idk what it is about Jack and this movie but it makes me cry. You are so rich about him having the best human touch and he’s really good at connecting with people. And his voice and the way he interacts and his main goal is to have fun and be happy. And his story is pretty sad because he basically did die. Like he had a tragic death but instead of becoming gloomy, he made sure everyone else was safe. I think it’s this that makes me so emotional. Plus some other things that are more personal and I still can’t really figure out. I think I kind of wish I had someone like that in my life.
Love your enthusiasm throughout your reactions, it's so contagious. If you haven't already seen them, would LOVE for you to do the Harry Potter series, incredible films with a VERY dedicated fanbase hahahha. Have a nice rest of your day :)
This and Finding Nemo, and Spirit Stallion of the Cimeron are my three favorite animated films of all time! But this is definitely the newest of the three and the only one to come out when I was actually in my teens Put How to Train a Dragon on that list too…
This is easily one of my favorite animated movies! I never thought of the Guardians as the Avengers but you are so right haha I'll never see them any different now. Really glad you liked this one. If you loved this animation style, you should watch Epic! It's another underrated one in my opinion. Beautiful and a really cool and interesting story.
He didn’t count on FUN 😁
Damnn
@@samuelvincent557 that is so cool
Aren't horses also called 'mares'? So the expression of 'nightmare' for a dark horse that haunts your dreams is super genius!
Female horses are called mares
Only females are called mares
Dang, clever! :O
Actually, several cultures have evil spirits / demons called 'nightmares' that are depicted as black horses (sometimes with flaming horns/hooves/eyes).
When I realized this years ago (years after I've watched the movie) my mind was feeling pretty stupid.
"For a second there I really thought there was gonna be a tragic backstory"
I mean..... he's a teenage boy that died saving his sister. And his body was still in the water (probably too dangerous for his family to get him out yet) and Man in Moon resurrected his corpse..... Not to mention how this probably affected his sister, to have him die in front of her and in her place. :'D
"Where are they now, I wonder?" Probably long gone, sadly. Since the opening of the movie took place centuries ago. The people that couldn't see him might have actually been the villagers of the place he grew up in.

I personally think his center would be caution, great comment though! Sums up exactly what I think of him!
@@mjmage33 Makes sense. His desire for a family also fits really well.
Me likey.
Also, the fact the spirit of fear and darkness and nightmares... was defeated right around daybreak.
Another moment like that is when Jamie sees Jack Frost.
He's just 😮, and can't muster anything more than a nod, but that's enough.
"See Bunny has a friendly side. It's underneath the surface!"
Me: You mean, it's...down under?
That joke is horrendous and you should be proud 😂
When the little boy hugs Jack at the end and Jack looks so shook I tear up EVERY time
It was the first time he'd been hugged by a human in 300 years
I always had a theory that Jamie is actually a descendent of Jack's sister. When jack tells the wind "take me home" it takes him to Jamie's town. And jamie and jack's sister look very similar
Their mother' voice actress is the same, too.
That's suchhh a cool theory oh my gazebos YES that would make so much sense
“Look at what we can do! What goes together better than cold, and dark?”
Pointing to an objectively beautiful sculpture of ice and shadow as he says this.
I spend too much time happy to be depressed!"
I didn't realize how much I was hurting until the weight came off.
Plus I wouldn't be this hyper and joyful if something was ACTUALLY wrong!"
It didn't help that the mental health "professional" I was assigned to would laugh at me, and things at home were not better
Even after I switched schools, it took years for me to realize how much I had been hurting, and how much I still was.
Do NOT feel guilty about switching mental health professionals if you feel like you need to! It doesn't matter how long you've known them, it doesn't matter how much you've told them!
I have yet to figure out if things become "good", but they DO get less awful!

It's really too bad, cause the quality is top-tier!
@@Scarletcroft that's actually quite cool. You've convinced me!

Did Mr. Joyce perhaps take inspiration for his books from "Hogfather" by Terry Pratchett? I saw more similarities between that book and this movie.
Pkay what's the reason he is so powerful
This series would’ve been RIPE for an Xmas or Halloween special and I’m mad this was never more, I love it so much, really hit home in a way maybe only one or two other movies have for me
Also cool side note- you can spot Jack’s sister in the beginning scene in the village, just before he says “excuse me, can you tell me where I am” and also a pretty popular fan theory that Jamie is actually decended from her since they look so similar, making him and Jack distantly related
I like the theory that Jamie was Jack's sister's descendent.

This movie is in a bit of an odd place adaptation-wise where the actual events aren't very similar, but at the same time, it feels like the creators respected the books too.

the nightmares can only attack people that fear them in any way
This is definitely one of those movies that deserved a sequel!! Unfortunately it underperformed at box office and they lost money on it. Definitely an underappreciated film!!
I love this movie. At one point I think I watched it 3 times in one week. So many details. And deep meaning and view on how children see the world.
Exactly! I certainly think this movie is worth checking out several times! And I thought the message was touching, wholesome, and awesome :)
Yeah. I can rewatch this any day. I probably have watched this movie like 10 times or so. I just love it so much.
It's so simple, yet leaves such an impact on me
"Whats Jack gonna dream of? Is he gonna have existential questions marks if he gets hit?" THAT SHADE 😭 Don't do our man Jack like that.
This is a Great DreamWorks Movie that has Aged Perfectly over the Years and I Hope and Pray that DreamWorks makes more Movies about this with a Continuation.
I would love a sequel!
@@nickreacts6394 Me too Man,Me too.
@@nickreacts6394 Same, I thought that this movie would be a great franchise, but not many people in United States watched it, and I'm very dissapointed.
A great movie I grew up watching I wish they would continue it to be honest also I believe Jack Frost meets his sisters great-grandson Jamie who is Jack Frost's great grand nephew meaning that their family that's why he has the vision of his little sister when Jamie says that he's scared any pictures his little sister
Let's get this movie made!
You should read the books
This movie was so good. I remember that it was on my list before it went to theaters and I was so sad that it flopped and didn’t get a sequel. I really love the story and the character development. It has so much that seems to be missing from a lot of movies lately.
I agree with you about Santa. One of the best Santas with some awesome tattoos. Jude Law also has a very good villain voice.
These factors alone would've made this movie epic!
This movie is such s hidden gem. The animation Number 9 (2009) is also amazing, would love to see a reaction to that.
I have no idea what that is, added to the list!
Yesssss, finally! I've been asking reaction to watch 9 foreverrr!
9 is incredible! The amount of times I’ve mentioned it to people and they’ve looked at me like I grew a second head. Definitely doesn’t get the attention it deserves
9 gives me too much anxiety.
It's tricky to notice, but you can see tiny blue sparks and hear a frost-like crackle when Pitch uses his shadow sand after breaking Jack's staff.
Yeah but that would leave a lot of room for the sequel….that never happened :(
My favorite scene is the last one, when they say good bye and Jamie runs to Jack and hugs him.
The movie hasn't even started yet and i already realize that I should be subscribed to this guy
Thank you!!
This is all I could find similar to the mouse being a European fairy
*THIS MOVIE IS WONDERFUL!* 😍❄
19:38 - 19:48 I'm Italian and I confirm: in Italy we _do_ have the mouse instead of the fairy.🐭🦷
That's really cool, happy to learn about the differences!
@@nickreacts6394 I didn't even know Sandyman and Jack Frost existed before this movie!😅Also I learned about the Easter Bunny from a Chip&Dale comic when I was a kid but it wasn't really a thing here...the only"guardian"we always had was Santa Claus!🎅(Who,fun fact,in Italian is called Daddy Christmas!🤣)
But in Italy we have a"Guardian"that Americans don't have. She's called Befàna and she's an old lady, similar to a witch, who flies on a broomstick and the night between the 5th and the 6th of January comes and puts in your sock some sweets if you were good and some coal if you were bad.🧹🧦
@@Nicamon yeah, I know what you mean. I'm German and I've never heard of the tooth fairy, pitch or jack frost before this movie. Even Santa clause is not common in the part of Germany I lived. instead of santa clause we have the "Christkind" (Christian child) in Bavaria. The Santa clause is more like the Nikolaus here...but Nikolaus day is on the 6th of December, not Christmas itself.
It's so interesting to learn from those movies and the culture differences
@@kurikuri6683 It's a bit sad that we managed to learn about a lot of American holidays thanks to movies, cartoons and TV shows(such as Halloween or Thanksgiving)but Americans didn't do the same with _our_ holidays and mythological creatures!:-
@@Nicamon indeed, that is sad! German is not only the October festival or Bavaria and french is not only croissant and Paris.
And I think it's also sad that European movies are not really shown often in outer European cinemas. But American movies are in almost every cinema in Europe... Maybe the future will bring some more European culture to the world 😊
This movie inspired me to get the book series. It's so good! William Joyce's art is absolutely incredible. He made a picture book staring The Man In The Moon, too! =D
Yes, Jack was absolutely PISSED that Sandy was destroyed and unleashed all hell upon Pitch. It was such an epic scene!
I can only imagine how much guilt his little sister had for the rest of her life. To answer your question, he probably still has relatives somewhere, if she had kids, and her descendants had kids. It has been over 300 years for Jack since then.
Jack frost was a childhood crush of mine. Also, the way he's animated to feel bouncy and floaty is just *chef's kiss* perfect
It’s such an amazing movie. I hope they make a sequel as there are many books this was based on
Also it’s Jude law as pitch aka dumbledor
I didn't realize this was based on a book series! We need sequels!!
@@nickreacts6394 There are five novels in the series that greatly expand on the origins of all the characters. 1) Nicholas St. North and the Battle of the Nightmare King. 2) E. Aster Bunnymund and the Warrior Eggs at the Earth's Core! 3) Toothiana: Queen of the Tooth Fairy Armies. 4) The Sandman and the War of Dreams. 5) Jack Frost: The End Becomes the Beginning. Though I think the last one was mainly written in response to the cult popularity of this film, since I'm fairly certain Jack wasn't in the original books and was added into the movie.
@@Indego84 didn’t they base him off of a similar child spirit in the books that also had a staff and was connected to the moon? It’s been awhile since I read the first book.
@@dylancole1910 Maybe, I've never read the actual books, I've just seen videos about them on TH-cam.
This movie has always been a favorite of mine, I saw it in theaters when it opened. I knew instantly whom the actors were voicing the characters, except the TF. I thought it was Amy Adams while I was watching it back then, then of course saw it was Isla Fischer. Which by happenstance, she looks like she could be Amy's sister, being that AA keeps her hair Auburn (she really a blond). I was thrilled and found it funny that Hugh Jackman was lol the Easter Bunny.😛 Jude Law does have the perfect voice for a scary character. 😈 Was fun watching along with you,Nick! Loved how much you totally got into all of it.
*Movie showing Jack’s sister* “ wonder where they are now” Forgetting this movie takes place 300 years later 😂
Hello ^_^ This movie was a good surprise to me.
19:43 Yes, in Europe we have the "Little Mouse" (that's what we call it in France, at least), we can say that it is our "Tooth Fairy". I was so happy to see our Little Mouse in this movie ! :D The little mouse takes our tooth when we sleep and gives us a little gift in return (like a coin or a small toy).
I think Jamie is a decendant of Jack's sister, the one he saved. Jamies sister Sophie also has blonde hair like Jack's sister in the flashback seen you can see a sister with the same haircolor.
I think so too. They look similar
to me its surprising to hear this was an underated gem because i was a teen on tumblr when this came out, and at one point i knew all the lines by heart. this was truly such a special movie to me and its so nice to see someone react so nicely to one of my favorite childhood movies
To answer the question about who voices pitch, jude law does it, and an incredible job of it at that!!! He makes a great villain.
41:18 44:38 This is such an *amazing* & underated film. 41:50 I *loved* how it turned mythological/ holiday characters into badass heroes w/ amazing character designs & cool abilities.
I haven't read the books, but I've heard that there's *a lot* of lore, & I would've loved to hv seen it explored in more films/ sequels.
This film is so underrated! I really wish there could’ve been a sequel to it! I know it’s based on a book series, which makes us crave more films! ❄️
This is to date one of my absolute favorite movies ever. I love the character designs, the story, the entire motif ... it just brings me so much joy and I watch it several times a year.
I love that despite the fact the Guardians have been a around and working for over 300 years at this point but they’re only just rising now :)
They were waiting for the opportune moment ;)
Bunny being the only one freaked out in the sleigh cause he's the only guardian who cant fly at all lmfao
This is the best reaction I’ve seen of this film ☺️ I will always cherish Rise of the Guardians. Everything from the the animation, to the voice acting; the magical story and the soundtrack… always gets me in my feels ❤️ I just wish it had more exposure and appreciation
Thank you so much for bringing this film further into the light, it's one of the most beautiful animated movies I've ever seen and has such a special place in my heart, such a healing place, and I can only imagine how many more people would have the opportunity to begin to heal their inner child and their search for purpose through seeing this movie. It operates on core needs and core fears in such a universal way.
It's a really good underrated movie that everyone writes off as a christmas movie because of Santa but it is a nice feel good movie anytime.
Here's some fun facts, the movie was inspired from the books, "Guadians of Childhood" by Bill Joyce.
So is no one going to tell him that Bunny is voiced by Hugh Jackman known for his role as Wolverine.
Love this movie - not a well known animated movie but it's so good. Can confirm that we have the tooth fairy in the UK
Canon or not, I like where your thinking here :)
I love this movie so much. Can't watch it without crying, even in the first 20 seconds.
I legitimately cry every time Jamie sees Jack for the first time. I love this movie so much.
This movie is one of my favorite childhood movies. I love it so much.
Yes! in Europe and other parts of the world we 'believe' or have a little mouse as the one who changes our theeths for money xD in Spain we call him 'El ratoncito Perez' (kinda like: Perez the litte mouse)
Sandman: Dreams
Santa Claus: Wonder
Tooth Fairy: Dreams
Easter Bunny: Hope
Jack Frost: Fun
All indispensable facets of childhood to be cherished
I believe in this film the Tooth Fairy represents *memories* , childhood memories to be specific. Btw I also think the facets of childhood represented in these characters is pretty clever.
This, Megamind, and Mitchels vs The Machines are my favorites. Totally underrated.
I've never seen this movie but I've seen so many reactions to it and it looks so cool
I highly recommend it!
Rise of the guardians is my FAVORITE. Movie of all time. I watch it every single day
Love your enthusiasm throughout your reactions, it's so contagious.
If you haven't already seen them, would LOVE for you to do the Harry Potter series, incredible films with a VERY dedicated fanbase hahahha. Have a nice rest of your day :)

interesting note, the director of this movie went on to direct Into the Spiderverse!
This and Finding Nemo, and Spirit Stallion of the Cimeron are my three favorite animated films of all time! But this is definitely the newest of the three and the only one to come out when I was actually in my teens
Put How to Train a Dragon on that list too…
This is easily one of my favorite animated movies! I never thought of the Guardians as the Avengers but you are so right haha I'll never see them any different now. Really glad you liked this one. If you loved this animation style, you should watch Epic! It's another underrated one in my opinion. Beautiful and a really cool and interesting story.
