Almost everything from robot Chicken first three to four seasons is pretty solid for stop-motion...... Also I'm reminded of the title "Requiem For a Tuesday"... That's a pretty specific reference that if you get I'll be happy

Hard to tell … There's Aardman Animation’s “Chicken Run” (and I've got a soft spot for their Wallace & Gromit movies), also Sony’s "The Pirates!" and Burton’s „Frankenweenie“, and basically just anything that Laika has done so far ...

the mother was far more lucid at night because she was of the moon kingdom. she, just like her family, drew her power from the moon. that was why her disabilities were worse at day.
the mother battle her sisters in a four-way intersection. the number 4 is generally believed to be an ill-luck number, often associated with death, in east asia cultures.

Laika are amazing, everything they do is gold and this is no exception. They're like THEY name in stop motion, and they've mastered integrating digital effects with real stop motion such that you can't tell where one ends and the other begins.
You want another great, heartfelt stop motion that doesn't go the way you think it will, look for Paranorman

  • @qrrbrbirbel2
    @qrrbrbirbel2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The giant skeleton puppet Kubo fights for the sword is based on a Japanese yokai called "gashadokuro". It comes from the spirits of people who died of starvation that came from war, I believe. When it picks up monkey and beetle, it draws them to it's face because it is said that gashadokuro kills people by crushing them and trying to drink their blood, in an attempt to feed itself.
On a slightly less gory note, the boat in this movie is message from over 250,000 paper cut leaves that were hand adhered to a large model boat. The entire boat scene took 18 months to shoot, if I recall.

I love this movie and everything Laika Studios does. I live in Portland OR and used to bike past their building. They have since moved to Hillsboro, OR which is just outside of Portland but still a lovely local studio. A few years ago the Portland Art Museum hosted an immense exhibition of the various models created by Laika. It was amazing and included the full size garden from Coraline. I went several times. The models of the two sisters were amazing and The Skeleton villain was the largest stop motion figure ever created at 16 feet tall. It was at the entrance to the exhibit and loomed over the room.

From the moment it began it was RIVETING and the intro with Kubo feeding his mother while the music score kicked in, I just knew this was going to be something special. Then the story unfolded and kept building and the battles starting happening which are straight up some of the most IMPRESSIVE fast paced intense action sequences in all of animation let alone live action (which makes the fact that its stop motion even more insane). The reveals, how solid of a story this was whether the twists became obvious its still exactly how this story needed to go and was done to perfection. The Sisters have always been my laptop background since the day I seen this

I thought from the start that he looks like a stag beetle 🤣 We recently found one that was as large as my hand, lying on its back in the middle of a bycicle track.
I helped him turn over and then he tried flying off but couldn't because his antlers were half as big as his entire body. 😅 🪲
So that guy in this movie definitely has a stag beetle vibe. 🤣

I love this movie so much, specially being a fan of japanese folklore and stories. To explain, its not that his grandfather and sisters were demons. They were gods. Immortals. Probably of the Moon People in japanese lore, same from which Princess Kaguya's story refers to. And his mother was an immortal that fell in love with a human samurai and left the realm of the gods to be with him among mortals. That's why she had powers, and Kubo did as well. And I was waiting for your to finally realize the truth about Monkey and Beetle. =)

Laika is the studio that also made Coraline, all of their stop motion movies are fantastic and absolutely worth watching
besides Coraline and Kubo they've also made ParaNorman, Boxtrolls and Mister Link, I hope you'll eventually get around to reacting to all of them
Also if you're curious to see bits of how stop motion is made I recommend watching the after credits of each Laika movie as well, since they always add a little bit of the puppetry they use in the movie (for example, look at the after credits of Kubo to see just how HUGE that skeleton puppet was, it's amazing, it's the biggest stop motion puppet Laika has made)
I especially recommend even reacting to the after credits clip in Boxtrolls if/when you decide to react to that movie

This movie totally blew me away when I first saw it--I went to watch it in theaters like two more times, lol! Everything about it is gorgeous, and so fun. My one critique is I wish they'd used more Japanese/Japanese-American voice actors for the roles, since it's Japanese-inspired. But I feel like Kubo released just as awareness for casting choices was just gaining steam. I feel like if they'd made it today, they probably would have. A live action movie with a visual style taken from the same inspiration, classic Japanese puppet theater, as this that I think you'd enjoy is Bunraku starring Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson, Ron Perlman, and Demi Moore, among others. Another movie I think you'd like is The Warrior's Way, starring Geoffrey Rush, Kate Bosworth, and Danny Huston, among others. Both movies have a live action anime kind of visual and storytelling style. Same goes for a show called Into the Badlands that I also highly recommend if you've never seen it. Cheers!

Case in point: Most of the general public doesn't appreciate the hard work that is put into passion projects. That I think is the saddest part about this movie. The fact that it wasn't embraced like other children movies.

If you love stop motion, then I'd like to introduce you to Chicken Run, which is a clay-motion animated movie. The same creator is also behind the Wallace & Gromit movies; some shorter, some longer and always fun. You can also find "making of" or "behind the scenes" videos for them here on TH-cam. I recommend to watch the movies first, of course. They are very British, sometimes with a sense of mystery like Jack the Ripper or Sherlock Holmes - if they met some silliness on the way of making and ended up a comedy.

I just found out about Lakia’s new film that is coming out soon. Wildwood is the new movie that will be out soon. It looks good from the video I saw about it on TH-cam. Their last movie, Missing Link was Pretty good but I thought it was the weakest of all the movies. It was about a Sasquatch and a man going on adventure to find the Bigfoot’s family. Boxtrolls, ParaNorman, Kubo, and Coraline were better movies than Missing Link in my opinion.
