Those of us who were teens in the 60's were so privileged to have some of the best entertainers and music of the century. I remember him well as an extremely talented man, who unfortunately suffered a severe heart attack while doing his high energy act at the old Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in 1975. He suffered major brain damage and lived in a semi comatose state till his passing in 1984.

My mother and father spent a night with him at the old Cave Club on the east side in Vancouver, BC, Canada. A guy insulted my mother, so my dad made "quick work of him," and knocked him out. Jackie had just finished performing and saw my dad 'knuckle' this guy out. He took a liking to my father and invited my mother and father to join him and his entourage at his table where he bought them drinks and acted like a real gentleman. His music is great. Iong live Jackie.

Saw Jackie Wilson many times at the old Regal Theater, at 47th St. and South Park Ave (now M L King Drive), in Chicago. He was truly "Mr Excitement" -- the man simply radiated energy and he drove the crowds wild. He was always the final act because, of course, who could follow that?

I love that tidbit about my home town. I miss growing up in Chicago. They moved the Regal to off Stony Island by that White Castle before Regal it closed some years back. I always heard it was in a different location at first but I didn’t know it was 47th and King Drive.

@@ladyt_ismyname6643 Ms. Favray -- I"m glad my comment reminded you of the old days in Chicago, and at the old Regal Theater. When I was going there frequently (1964 - 1968), it was on South Park Ave, renamed ML King drive in '68 or '69. As I recall, at some time the Regal moved into the old Avalon Theater bldg, but I'm not positive on this. By the way: I am white, and the crowds, as you might imagine, were -- well, there were often 2000 people in the audience, but I was never made to feel unwelcome, or even looked at funny. The whole thing seemed to be, "If you're here for the music, then that's the only credential you need" -- I was just one of the thousands who came for one of the finest musical experiences on earth.

And NO ONE can "do" Roy Orbison, not even Chris Isaak although he comes about as close as you can get.

Interestingly, another brilliant talent was also dubbed "The Black Elvis." Namely Jimi Hendrix, due to his gyrating, electrifying stage act in his early years, especially 1967-68. But Hendrix tired of that routine fast. He was influenced a lot by Elvis, but not in terms of his sound or vocal style or his stage moves. Chuck Berry, T-Bone Walker, and others factored into Hendrix's "act" and guitar style. What impacted Hendrix the most about Elvis was the energy that he saw Elvis create and how Elvis was energized by his audience. Hendrix saw that power as a teenager and it really stuck with him. But Hendrix took it way beyond Elvis, and all but abandoned his tried and true stage routine by 1969, much of which he acquired from oberving the r&b greats he toured with as a backup man on the Chitilin' Circuit, including the likes of the Isleys, Jackie Wilson, Wilson Pickett, Motown acts, and so many others. In place of this routine he delved deeper and deeper into the music, and his entire aura and aesthetic gave him even greater power to touch his audience and his listeners. He took it places that Elvis and the r&b greats could never dream of. Maybe John Coltrane, Roland Kirk, Charles Parker, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon or Miles Davis et al from the jazz world laid the groundwork and had an inkling, but Jimi was an Afrofuturist before the term was even coined, connecting the lines from the slave ship to the space ship. These connections are often ignored, but they give us a deeper appreciation for the arist and their cultural productions.

He had hits in the late 50's and this one in the late 60's, the same Mr. Excitement. One of the many 45's I bought in the 60's. Love the fringe on his boots.

From 1957 to 1973, the extent of his solo career, he had over 50 hits on either the Billboard Top 100 and/or R&B charts...including 6 #1 R&B Hits.

In a league of his own, a live solo performance just doesn’t get any better than that...4va a fan of the late, great, Mr. Jackie Wilson...

So I had the privilege of seeing this video back before there was a TH-cam, heck before the internet was a household thing on PBS and recorded on a VHS tape. I am so glad that youtube came along and that I didn't order the complete set of digitally remastered discs for a donation of $129

@@dogwithwigwamz.7320 Actually, as good as this might be, it's far from Jackie's best. I was there in 1966 when Elvis came to see Jackie at "The Trip" in Hollywood. Elvis went bezerk watching Jackie. That was when Elvis told Jackie, "there is no reason why your not the #1 singer in the world today"
