That's the reason we use 230V as mains voltage. Less amperage for the same demand. And if even that's not enough, in Germany three-phase power is common even in residentials. So you have three phases, every single one has a voltage of 230V against neutral or ground. The voltage between the lines is 400V.
But sometimes you can also divert the load on the three phases. For example the kitchen cooker. There one large and one small plate are connected to L1, the other two are connected to L2. The baking oven is connected to L3. In that case a three pole circuit breaker with 16A is sufficient to power an electric kitchen cooker with round about 11 kW.

i think i read somewher that, in america, it was the copper mining industry that pushed for 120v so that we'd need thicker copper wire due to more current and they'd make more money. i'd love for 240 volts to be standard. we already have 240v at our breaker panels, so it's not like it would be difficult.

Get the 240 volt versions. the amperage will be cut in half as are the ones sold in Europe.

Whenever I see someone planning and mapping out the potential power needs of a garage or a kitchen with a meter, I know things are off to a good start!

The thing is to consider the diversity, you don't use all your appliances at the same time. There are tables for diversity factors. For example carpenter's workshop got a factor of between 0.3 and 0.4. Car workshop between 0.2 and 0.3, the same as a normal mechanical workshop. The factors are without considering the lighting in that wokshops, these are only the power circuits.
And for example you want to install an electric kitchen cooker with a baking oven in your kitchen, the demand is 10.5 kW. I'm from Europe, so I'll calculate with 230V, but with 240 it's not that different. So the amperage on full power would be:
      10500 / 230V = 45.65 A
Then use the first 10A as fix, and add 30% of the rest amperage to it:
      45,65A - 10A = 35.65A
      35.65A x 0.3 = 10.7A
10.7A + 10A = 20.7A, I don't know how the steps in fusing are in the US, but 20A would be too small, I would use 25A which would be the next step. And in case of an outlet on the kitchen cooker, I haven't seen them for a long time, but then add another 5A.
That's for single phase of course. For three-phase it's a bit different, because there you don't have such high currents:
      10500W / sqrt of three / 400V = 15.2 A. So a three pole breaker with 16A would be sufficient.

@@Marcel_Germann That's definitely a good way to explain it! I'm used to seeing some folks show up with the "guess-o-meter" look on their face.. haha.

Good demonstration Sparky. Modern kitchens aren't what they used to be.

I have a big mixing console in my studio. It’s in a different structure on our property, with a separate circuit panel. When I run my vitamix in the house, the torroidal transformer on my mixing board power supply starts to hum loudly. Is it possible that the current draw exceeds the capacity of our power supply for the two structures? Is the vitamix somehow getting DC current on our main line? Is it creating dirty power? I’d love to know what’s happening. It can’t be good….

If it was on a GFI 15amp circuit would it have thrown the breaker because it went to 12amps?

In older homes, the counter top outlets in the kitchen are fed by 2 different phases. (top outlet is one phase, bottom outlet is the other) You can plug a toaster into one outlet and a space heater into the other and not pop the breaker, as they are essentially on different circuits. I would recommend that you do a video on these split phase outlets.

    • @nathantmnguyen
      @nathantmnguyen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Of course, this would not work if your kitchen has GFI's as there is not tab connecting the two hots together.

thien minh nguyen It‘s not impossible to retrofit RCD/GFCI protection in that case. But you‘ll have to use a bit of creativity. You can use a a small panel with a piece of DIN rail in it and install a european style RCD in it. But the thing is, you won‘t get them in the regular stores in the US. That‘s industrial material.
They are three phase, but you can also use them as single phase devices.
