  • There are an infinite number of ways to anchor and different factors in anchoring. With a very strong storm system approaching Florida and risk of tornados we take a good look at anchoring. Here are some basics and what I think is the best way to anchor a boat in most situations especially as a live liveaboard. tulasendlesssummer.com

    Great anchor video! I've used that technique several times and it's never let me down. I've also survived a 60 mph hurricaine with my double Rocna set up. I have two Rocna anchors I believe the big one is 60 lbs and the smaller one is 35 lbs. Rocna has pre-drilled a hole in the back of their anchor so you can attach another chain and swivel leading to another anchor. So I have 40' of chain on the large anchor leading to the smaller anchor which has an all chain rhode leading to the boat. Of course I use plenty of scope some times more than 10:1 ratio. This set up has never failed me, the 1st anchor holds you and the 2nd anchor keeps the chain laying flat on the bottom of the 1st anchor and also acts as kind of a snubber should it break free which I do not think it ever has. The only disadvantage to this is the long scope can produce a large swing radius however since I use this when i know it's going to be really really bad most other boats are out of the water or tied up along a dock hoping and praying that the dock doesn't float away or put a hole in their boat where I rest and drink coffee and for the most part stay pretty relaxed. I make it a habit to use plenty of chaffing gear and check it every 6 to 8 hours if possible. Good Luck and thanks for the great tutorial! Good Job! Bill S.

    You should also give advice on how long your anchor line should be. Also, how important an anchor chain can be. I struggled to anchor in high winds, added chain and so much better. And lastly keeping lines out of props🚤👍

    Can you decribe the swivel? What brand do you recommend? What size? Our 40' is about the same weight and size of yours, what swivel size is recommended for a 20000 lb boat. Thanks Learned something valuable here.

    And if you are afraid of a lightningstrike, you can use jumpcables from mast or from highest point of your boat down to water. Old trick used in larger sailingboats anchored alone in bay.
    Personaly i hate Danforth anchors. Because if they lose grip, they just move around on bottom. Second best option is CQR anchor, because it can hold grip better. But maybe the best anchor is Bruce anchor. Number one is still concreteblock over 10,000lbs...
    But the most important thing in all anchoring anywhere, is that you allways remember to triple anchorline vs the depth of water! It helps anchor to maintain grip while tide- or winddirection is changing.
    Just hang on there you three :)

    Hey, been watching your videos for awhile, I enjoy them keep them up! I don't have concrete plans, but I thought about when I retire from the military to maybe by a trawler and live aboard. I watched your "how much does it cost" video, was wondering where do you find free areas to anchor up? Can you anchor up anywhere as long as you're not blocking the intercostal? Are there certain marinas that allow free anchoring outside the marina, if so how do you know if they offer this? Thanks.

    Same question as Jacko74... cant you tie off to the Mangroves? What about a couple of spring lines to the Mangroves?

    • @DKB268
      @DKB268 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was curious the same about the mangroves also. in the Bahamas they tie to them instead of an anchor. love your advice on everything.

    • @wilfdarr
      @wilfdarr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Lowe, Photographist Since they haven't answered I'll chime in with my thoughts: I think they were expecting the boat to swing in the night: if they tie to the mangroves then they are perpendicular to the wind coming through the narrow channel there (unless they tie at 4 points, which would preclude them from swinging to match the wind as the storm passes), where as anchored Bahamian, they allow the boat to find least resistance. Never done it myself, but from talking to a couple who have, I got the feeling that you would only tie to the mangroves if you could get in somewhere where you were almost surrounded: 270+° kind of thing.

    You left out a few things. Types of anchors,how much chain to use,how much rode ect. There's a lot to know to anchor properly. That little Danforth type anchor with a short piece of chain that you threw isn't going to do much.

    • @wilfdarr
      @wilfdarr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      fishin n flyin That depends on the bottom: a Danforth in clean sand holds darned good. It's downfall is it's inflexibility, not it's holding power. Did the trick on that night obviously…
